]]>At times the film feels like an insane hyper-fixation, but gradually a clear narrative comes into focus with a strong eco-socialist undercurrent. Beautifully shot at times, it's further evidence that Takahata could just as well have made a great body of work in live action filmmaking as well.

]]>Rewatching this as an adult I was even more impressed by Billie Bob Thornton's performance here. Thornton ably navigates Zwigoff's characteristically bipolar relationship to his subjects and delivers a surprisingly realistic portrait of a deeply depressed and damaged man circling the drain. And as broad as some of the humor is, he's able wring even more out of so many subtle little moments, like his quietly squeamish "goddamn it" after Thurman cuts himself.
]]>Has the narrative quality of a 90's fantasy anime OVA with the production values of a modern feature. It's what's charming about it but also what limits it.

]]>A sort of wuxia answer to the Birds. Not sure how to rate this one since I couldn't tell how much the plot issues are the film's fault and how much of it is due to the really wonky subtitles the version I saw had.

]]>Less horror and more everything-and-the-kitchen-sink gothic romanticism. Mining the canon of pre-modern western art, Coppola produces some of the most arrestingly beautiful images of his career, but everything is so mediated there is rarely a clear sense of place. There is never a sense of creeping horror produced by Dracula's presence intruding on a normal, modern world. In a way, this is more his story than anyone else's. The film often feels like a fever dream produced by an infection.

]]>Honestly didn't expect Tim Burton of all people to crack the code on the Gen X sequel nostalgia cash in. Tells just enough of a new story and replicates just enough of what worked in the original to pull this off.
