How Disney could ruin this with a remake is beyond me.

I miss the production values of these old rom coms, but the script is a bit lacking with this one.

As a Dudeist priest, rewatching this film is a sacrament I take part in every now and then, but this time really tied the room together. Only now do I realise Walter Sobchak is a tragic and somewhat pathetic figure, representing the toxic “warrior poet” mentality as flawed when applied to civilian life. I laughed out loud multiple times, even though I lost count of how many times I’d seen this wonderful movie.

Norm MacDonald was a talented comedian who didn’t get the opportunities in Hollywood that he deserved, reduced to slumming it in dreck like ‘Christmas Is Here Again’ yet performing well in the Netflix Santa film ‘Klaus’. Dirty Work is a product of its time, although I doubt Norm saying “loyal army of sex workers” would have hit the same. A sequence where sabotage of a building is set to ‘Dirty Deeds Done Dirt Cheap’ by AC/DC is a highlight of the movie, with a murderer’s row of comedic talent from Don Rickles as a mean theatre owner and Gary Coleman in a memorable hallucination scene with Adam Sandler. I think I liked this better than ‘Step Brothers’ even if ‘Dirty Work’ is just as stupid.

Powerful ANZAC Day viewing, making the past come alive with modern technology. Sabaton made a career chronicling the heroism of soldiers, but this film strips away the glory and lays bare the pointless waste of it all. The tales of servicemen returning to civilian life hammer home the struggles of veterans in any war.

I liked the part where he played the guitar so well that the entire history of black music was happening in the same room as he shredded.

A product of the era when they still made mid budget romance dramas with actual production values. My family court lawyer mother was counting the red flags the whole time, at least Miles Teller had an arc with his character’s alcoholism in this or I’d be irritated.

Don’t let the outback happen to you, just don’t. One of the greatest Australian films ever produced was directed by a Canadian. RIP Ted Kotcheff. Worth watching for Chips Rafferty’s appearance, one of his last roles.

Dav Pilkey will save literacy, but this movie will entertain me for an afternoon. Judging from how well attended by actual children my screening was it was a hit with the target audience, was not expecting it to go RoboCop for kids with the main character’s backstory.

Also the DVD residuals for Tombstone helped the director’s son Panos Cosmatos make his first film, Beyond The Black Rainbow, which led to the Nicholas Cage movie Mandy existing. I’ve heard worse nepo baby origins by far.

At least I now know the context for “boats and hoes”. I think I prefer Elf over this very stupid  movie, in which Will Ferrell and John C Reilly act like forty year old manchildren for an hour and a half. Maybe this was better in the 2000s? I noticed a Heavy Metal movie poster prop used as a symbol of the character’s immaturity. My mother said that I besmirched her TV with this film, which is well ed but overrated.

This movie was so stupid it was brilliant, 2D animation on the big screen should happen more often than it does. Had Angry Beavers vibes and I mean that as a compliment.

I’m on that Latvia Flow, this shit ain’t nothing to me, man. It was like a Werner Herzog film without a German narrator, which sounds terrible but the animation enchanted me with zero dialogue with its tale of Earth without humans and animals thriving in the junk we left behind. Worthy of the Oscar it won for sure.

This Road House remake couldn’t hold a candle to Patrick Swayze’s ass shots in the original, the presence of a few displays of male posterior pale in comparison. Disappointing throughout.

I really liked the book this was based upon growing up, but the climax is very different if I can . Baby Nicholas Hoult is in this pre-Mad Max and pre-vampire hunting roles, I forgot he started out as an adorable child actor. Hugh Grant plays another rom com mess of a man, adapted from Nick Hornby’s prose to create a delightful result as he learns to take responsibility in his life. Enjoyable viewing.

The producers competing to exploit the Demon House story in Gary, Indiana makes you question the motives for investigating this alleged haunting, Zak Bagans buys the home and claims it’s infested with demons. I walked away from this film a little skeptical of it all.

A disturbing look at paedophiles and the legal system trying to rehabilitate them into society, with a strong implication these men will be stuck rotting away in this facility until the day they from this life. The altogether ookey cover version of The Addams Family theme song is a highlight of this bleak documentary which follows the grand tradition of British journalists probing the lives of American creeps who for some reason agree to be on camera.

Louis Theroux is one of the only people who should be talking to Nazis, an all timer journo up there with John Safran in Australia. Trump is in power again and people featured in this doco represent a subsection of white people who are devoted to extreme racism which is often veiled for a polite facade to guard job security. The worst part is seeing the indoctrinated kids singing hate speech they have to be coached to understand by their horrible Nazi mother. A sobering viewing experience.

Saw this in a theatre on a Saturday evening where drunk wine mums were having a girls night at the movies, probably one of the most realistic portrayals of a widowed single parent ever put to film. I haven’t heard that many sniffles in a cinema since Avengers: Endgame. I put in the work of watching all the Bridget Jones movies before watching this one and I was completely invested as a result.

“I’m going to arouse every woman and gay man in India with this disco sequence where I dance with my bare chest being splashed with water.” - Shah Rukh Khan, probably.

The definition of cinema, a jewel of Bollywood filmmaking with plenty of style and charm to make three hours of dancing and singing go by. I don’t even mind that it turns into Murder, She Wrote with musical numbers at the end, it’s rad.

A beautifully animated action extravaganza with deep roots in Taoist religion (even though it was very critical of abuse of religious power), which reminds me that my cultivation efforts aren’t orthodox enough. A truly hateable bad guy for the ages that puts Disney’s recent twist villains to shame, I enjoyed it throughout. It was giving Monkey Magic a lot in the humour.

Bridget Jones is an iconic British character, maybe not up there with James Bond in of recognisability but definitely in the league of entertainment value when it comes to romcom antics. So many romcoms that are inflicted on Netflix and Hallmark are dull and forgettable, but Bridget Jones’s Baby lingers in the mind for me. Hugh Grant’s not in this one but Colin Firth is, and he brings a charming performance as his human rights lawyer at a serious job to play off Bridget Jones’ less prestigious TV career.

Aside from a tired Thai ladyboy joke at Hugh Grant’s character’s expense, Richard Curtis didn’t do too bad co-writing this one, even if it is a dated product of its time. Bridget Jones is paranoid and clingy in this film, which seems counter-intuitive to her purpose as a character. Colin Firth is still trading blows with Hugh Grant like the last film but it’s not as Jackie Chan as the previous entry.

I know having prime Colin Firth and Hugh Grant in this is an achievement but Bridget Jones’ Diary also has the distinction of preserving pre-eye-stabbing Salman Rushdie for the ages and not enough people are talking about that fact.

An all timer rom com from the peak of Britpop, this movie made more money than God, plus it launched Hugh Grant’s acting career into the stratosphere. An entertaining watch for sure.

Oz Perkins wilds out with a ludicrous premise adapted from Stephen King, absurd amounts of gore and plenty of laughs at the dark void. If death is coming for us all, Oz is here to remind us how quick and how senseless it can be.

This silly Amanda Bynes comedy has a lot to say about the British tabloids and their negative impact on the UK political landscape. Methinks censoring the peace sign on the poster to prevent an alleged anti-Iraq War statement only neuters its message so much. Who knew Jonathan Pryce from Brazil was in this?

Lurid grindhouse trash of the highest order, this Cold War Christploitation has all the low budget gore and fire and brimstone preaching you can handle. At only an hour long it doesn’t overstay its welcome as it condemns everything from the threat of communism, dancing and cartoons. With Christian evangelicals like these, is it any wonder some spiritual women turned to the feminist witchcraft of Silver RavenWolf instead? Estus Pirkle is a fossil record of the revival tent circuit, preserved on celluloid for future generations to laugh at and be horrified.

A cheap jack evangelical freakout that takes aim at the occult and new agers, featuring a borderline racist scare chord when a Buddha statue is used as a spooky prop in a room full of far spookier props. Ron Ormond’s Christsploitation scare flicks cannot be silenced by a flooded basement that claimed the original film elements, and Indicator has resurrected these hilarious propaganda pieces like Lazarus. I expected far worse transfer quality than what we got on this Blu Ray set, I watched this one first to see what I was in for. The Grim Reaper overlaps into religious horror, lecturing the audience about the unsaved dead, which is hard to take seriously when one of the cameo preachers was a convicted pedo.

Barry Manilow isn’t mild enough for the psychotic evangelicals who made this film. A depressing descent into madness that comes across as parody if you don’t realise the people behind it are dead serious, nasty homophobia is hard to ignore between laughing at the 80s period details like the mall record store and the oppressive atmosphere of conservatism. I watched this on a stream with a trans witch, it was a hilarious experience for everyone there.

A two hour thriller of intrigue, doubt and examination of true religious faith in an uncertain and often extremist world. The ending is certainly unexpected for this type of movie, Ben Shapiro is fuming and I’m loving it.
