Are you stupid? Don’t worry, because even if you’re not, the director of this film thinks you are.

There something to be said for when a director takes a concept, and rather than following it to a safe and logical conclusion, goes full gonzo with it. Every scene, no matter how gross-out, how ridiculous, or how anticipated, grabs your attention and holds it. It doesn’t hurt that Demi completely dazzles here, even as a pile of amorphous sludge.

Now that’s entertainment.

Beautifully filmed and wonderfully marketed, but i left the theatre unsatiated. The suspense of the first hour seemed to wane with too much heavy breathing, repetitive convulsions, and constant “He is coming!” from the characters. I enjoyed the cloistered Victorian slowburn scenes but even those fizzled in the end. Enjoyable, entertaining, and artfully detailed, but there’s a hollowness just beneath the surface that left me wanting more (or perhaps something different altogether).

Truly a hypnotic masterwork of mystery and chilly atmosphere. Of course, as with all great mysteries, we’re left to decide the answer for ourselves. The easiest explanation here is one that requires either a belief in an unexplained supernatural force or an understanding of an impossible scientific marvel, maybe a combination of both. Regardless of the answer, the understated acting, darkling cinematography, and unnerving score make this a classic worth revisiting again and again.
