I am stunned by the poor technical and narrative decisions that were made during the construction of this tedious and asinine film. The worst MCU installment by a margin. Florence Pugh deserves better.

And the Russian accents are laughably bad, too.

Certainly, Thunderbolts* is one of the best Marvel movies since Avengers: Endgame, which I know a lot of folks are saying, but then again, that’s not really saying much with the offerings we have been given by the MCU lately. And, by lately, I mean the last couple years, not just months. Both Florence Pugh (who I am convinced can do no wrong) and David Harbour are absolute standouts in this one and steal the show in any scene they are…

Marvel Ultimate Anti-Hero Alliance
It's time to root for the morally-gray-and-baggage-loaded guys. Marvel says we've reached the point to move past their prior mistakes, traumas, and errors in judgement as well as past the recent lackluster MCU offerings. Mirroring the formation of more than a couple famous Marvel teams, the new squad of begrudged-super-best-friends are thrown together for one reason only to unite against a common foe: obscurity. Although one character is brutally deemed not up to the task at…

Suffers from the same problem that the first GOTG had wherein we have a cast of colorful characters sort of stuck in a by the book story where they become a found family by the end of yada yada yada, though I will note that this has much more emotional depth than that film did. People weren't kidding about how much this is about depression, angst and feeling cast aside by the world, even as its about a bunch of…

Checking in on Marvel because I heard the MCU stopped sucking, and you know, this was pretty good. Enough that there’s the smallest spark of hope in me for a comeback for the cinematic universe, which should make the competition between Marvel and DC a proper fight instead of a race to the bottom. This would slot in nicely somewhere in the mid-2010’s of the MCU in of quality and storytelling. There’s no reinventing the wheel, but no destroying…

THUNDERBOLTS* is the most affecting Marvel Studios effort in quite some time, exploring loneliness and depression through the character of Bob Reynolds aka The Sentry (Lewis Pullman).

As a big fan of Brian Michael Bendis' 2005 run on THE NEW AVENGERS, in which The Sentry was re-introduced, I was happy to see the character handled appropriately - and I really hope we get to see more of him in the MCU because Pullman is great in the role.

Likewise, Florence Pugh is tremendous as Yelena Belova; the empathy you feel for her, and her relationship with Bob, forms the backbone of the movie.

I will keep beating the drum for this lovely little action thriller, especially now that Thunderbolts* is basically a full-blown sequel to it. Its rating on here is criminally low.

The family story is exceptionally well-done, Yelena’s angle in particular (“It was real to me!”) is heartbreaking, and like yes you can watch Thunderbolts* without having seen this just fine, but that “Daddy, I’m so alone” line hits even harder when you hear Yelena tell Red Guardian he was everything…

What I went to watch in 2025 - Film 38

You know what, hell yeah. Maybe it's because I went in with the lowest of expectations but I thought this ruled! It felt like an actual film made by actual people 🤯 Easily one of the best MCU movies somehow and manages to do some interesting things with the random assortment of characters.

My oldest daughter wanted to see this really badly and I continue to watch the MCU, sometimes out of sheer habit, but in this case because you'll be reminded what a good MCU movie can be.
Even with the usual Marvel humour this had a way of feeling different, like it wanted to do more than just blow stuff up or bring in crazy cameos.
This also wasnt just a wannabe Suicide Squad.
Florence Pugh was the main anchor and…

Second time, in IMAX

Lotta people talking about the chemistry between Yelena and Bob, but watch it again and there’s *no way* Ghost and John Walker aren’t in a self-hating fuck-buddy situation by the end of this

Also, if you liked this, don’t sleep on Black Widow! A lot of the stuff that makes this good — Florence Pugh, grounded action and stunts, found family, David Harbour being a girldad — get their start there!

I'm not gonna sit here and act like Thunderbolts* (kudos to Disney for keeping the asterisks for comedic affect) is the shot in the arm that the MCU needed to get back on their hot streak. Reminder, they've had solid-to-great outings post-Endgame and I doubt the pattern is going to change dramatically after this newest entry. But it has really been awhile since the MCU released a film that actually had people buzzing about the future of the franchise. Best…
