Dune: Part II continues the epic of Dune in a way which somehow manages to sur the grandiose storytelling and vision of the first film.

A complete use of the power of movie theatres, and a true testament to why they will always be the best medium of watching films.

This movie immerses you so deep into it's rich world and mythology. These films manage to cover so much ground, without being too dull. The pacing is absolutely masterful. There is never a moment where you aren't excited to see what's going to happen next.

Something this film does incredibly well is building up to big moments. Whether it be Paul's speech, the amazing sandworm scene, the climactic final battle or our introduction to Feyd-Rautha. The editing, sound and visuals all work together in perfect harmony to create the most satisfying experience to the viewer. I so often found myself at the edge of my seat, and repeating to my self "Holy shit its about to happen", because this movie lets you know when something cool is about to happen, it gives you time to prepare yourself, and when it happens, it's the best feeling ever.

The sound of this movie is AWESOME. There were so many points in this film where the sound design was all I could think about. It's absolutely masterful work. Particularly, the sandworm scene. I will always that scene, not only because of the amazing visuals and payoff, but also because of how immersive it sounded. Even seemingly basic things like the sandworms, the chanting of the crowd and even the sounds of knives colliding with each other are put together in such a way, where I truly FELT like I was witnessing the events first hand. I FELT like I was one of the Fremen on Arrakis. Also, the score is really damn great. Does the job incredibly well.

A big element to this immersion is also the breathtaking cinematography. Unfortunately, there aren't any IMAX theaters near me, but I can only imagine how grand it would have felt to see this movie at maximum capacity. Knowing that this wasn't even the full experience, I can only imagine how much of a spectacle this truly is. This film is just full of gorgeous shots. I feel like once every 2 minutes there's a shot that I could just screenshot and make my wallpaper.

This movie is edited so tightly. There's no
dead air in here, not a second wasted.

There's also a really great balance of comedic relief, particularly from Stilgar. Really nicely written in.

Also, the fight choreography in this film... just MMMMM. The knife fights, oh my god the knives fight. Absolutely spectacular. All the little skills and tricks they added into the fight routines makes the fights seem so real, so violent, the impact of every single blow is felt. The action in general is so incredibly well done.

The plot itself is really thought provoking, and something I'll be unpacking for a while. There's a lot of deeper messages lying in here. Incredibly dense. On the surface though, it's really an excellent story. Seeing Paul go from a well meaning young boy to giving into people's expectations of prophecy, all culminating in an ending that leaves you yearning for more. Im definetely researching the next few books after watching this, but I have full faith that going into the next movie, I'll still be blown away. I went into this film largely unaware of what was going to happen, and I think that was a great decision. This narrative is so gripping, and so exciting to watch unfold. Every little surprise had my jaw dropping. This film is truly excellently written. I haven't read the books, but everyone I've talked to about them have told me that these films have done a fantastic job at adapting them. This is the true realisation of such a grand vision, and if it manages to truly convey what Herbert wrote all those years ago, I am in awe.

The sets and costumes all feel so real.
Also, fantastic performances. Chalamet is a true star. Austin Butler chews the scenery like its none of his business. Zendaya acts with her eyes so well, she could go a whole movie without ever opening her mouth and still end up giving an amazing performance.
The older actors do their part incredibly well too. All these roles are perfectly casted.

Now, after all of that, I'm giving this a 4.5

This rating is really just an out of the theatre thing, and maybe after I unpack it more and fully understand what it's going for, I'll bump it up to a full 5.

This film has much to say about politics and religion and war and love, it'll take a day or two of marinating.
