]]>Really beautiful and moving, and doing it all without a single vocal performance (I believe they used only real sounds from animals) is something to behold.
I can’t help but compare it to The Wild Robot—similar vibes and themes—and that film’s got my heart. But what this film delivered for a fraction of the budget is an amazing achievement.

]]>Rules. Jon M. Chu couldn’t be more confident with this material. There’s nothing left to say about Cynthia Erivo and Ariana Grande; I knew Erivo was the right casting choice immediately when it was announced, but was pretty bummed about Grande, but yeah both crushed the acting and the singing. Great, GREAT stuff, and those 161 minutes flew by. The next year waiting for Part 2 won’t.

]]>🤨
What a ride. I found myself wobbling between “I’m getting this” and “this is nonsense.” There’s a barrage of very good actors of our time, but also—hoo boy—many of them are problematic.
Coppola did right in casting Driver, though, because every scene with him sizzles. His commitment to the material, and his innate ability to get ridiculous without losing credibility, really keeps you connected. Same goes for Aubrey Plaza.
FFC had to make this film. It’s obvious this was inside him and he had to get it out. It’s the coda of his career and his life, and I’m glad it exists.
]]>Oh, Timmy. Not sure what more I could’ve asked for from this. Everyone involved really showed up. I was most concerned that a 2024 take on an 80s movie would lose the vibe, but it all felt right; credit to practical effects and Burton not shying away from being weird. So much fun, and a great start to spooky season.

]]>An extra half-star for a serviceable Terminator 2 reference.
]]>Five takeaways on this viewing:
1. The amount of world-building accomplished in 92 minutes is absurd. The film moves.
2. Wait, sandworms are on Saturn? What does that have to do with the afterlife?
3. Catherine O’Hara is an insufferable displaced NYC aristocrat in small town who wears only black and white. Moira Rose much?
4. Danny Elfman, ladies and gentlemen.
5. As a kid, I knew that Beetlejuice was the guy who played Bruce Wayne, but I just couldn’t see him in there. Still have the same take. Keaton totally disappears into this character.
It took everything in me to not quote this entire movie so that my kids could enjoy their first viewing. And enjoy it they did.

]]>For whatever reason, when I was a kid in the 90s I preferred a lot of sequels. I think it's probably because these first films were more serious, and the filmmakers had more fun with the sequels. And that's a big point here, most of these movies' originals are better films. I just prefer the sequel.
