Come for the Jim Carrey, stay for the Jim Carrey.

Really beautiful and moving, and doing it all without a single vocal performance (I believe they used only real sounds from animals) is something to behold.

I can’t help but compare it to The Wild Robot—similar vibes and themes—and that film’s got my heart. But what this film delivered for a fraction of the budget is an amazing achievement.

Fun! Equal parts nostalgia-fest, Lonely Island silliness (but for kids!), commentary on the industry, and serviceable net new Rescue Rangers adventure. Can’t complain about that.

I spent the runtime trying to figure out the licensing arrangements. When Mickey Mouse and Bugs Bunny shared a scene in Roger Rabbit, it felt like the world imploded; this movie takes the non-Disney cameos up a notch. (Oh right, Disney owns a helluva lot more IP now. Even so.)

Also: they got Jim Cummings back but he didn’t voice Monterey Jack??

It took everything in me to not quote this entire movie so that my kids could enjoy their first viewing. And enjoy it they did.
