I was waiting for this for so long and I can absolutely say the wait paid off.

The anti-AI messaging in this is very strong, maybe too heavy handed to some but I really enjoyed all the Entity sequences, the editing in them is jus so good. This motif in general is a bit reminiscent of Dune's Butlerian Jihad

Really insane stunts which I honestly liked more than Dead Reckoning. Also this installment of the series leans a bit more into the horror aspect, especially in the underwater sequence. My hands were sweating a bit, I it.

I'm not sure I loved the ending. It's probably the only thing holding me back from giving Final Reckoning 4.5 stars. It felt a bit underwhelming, especially if you consider this to be an ending of the entire franchise. Feels as though we're back to square one.

Overall, definitely worth watching on the big screen! Go see it if you can.

Let me just start off by saying I do not care about this franchise, at all. But I've decided to give Bloodlines a chance.

The script is... largely nonsensical. I do understand that people watch these for the over the top kills but the viewer really has to assume almost every character in this film has room temperature IQ in this one.

The lead character whose name I honestly can't is basically just Yellowjackets' Lottie Matthews. The acting (aside from maybe, two or three actors) leaves much to be desired but I like that they didn't go full nostalgia bait or bring in some known faces just to get the viewership up. Fun editing, especially in the kill sequences. A bit reminiscent of Saw (2004), just way less cool.

I had fun though so it can't have been that bad. You just need to not take it too seriously.

I haven't seen a marvel movie since Guardians of the Galaxy 3 (good). I haven't watched any shows, except some of Hawkeye (very mediocre). I've seen Black Widow (terrible). So I really had no expectations. I was pleasantly surprised.

Good script really does wonders. Yelena's vulnerability and the portrayal of Bob's mental illness are my favorite part of the film. I would go as far as to say, Bob is a really good representation of bipolar disorder. The majority of Marvel movies these days severely lack emotional depth, which Thunderbolts* provides. The movie does a really good job at making you care about these characters, especially Bob and Yelena.

I didn't really love the first act and the post-credit scenes (thanks, Russo brothers) and how one of the character arcs was handled or more like, not handled at all, also the "New Avengers" press, mere 2 days after the initial release... but I liked this movie. I'm glad I gave it a chance.

Managed to catch this in IMAX. Visually very appealing, definitely needs to be seen on the big screen. The score is simply phenomenal, especially the big dance sequence (we all know which one). Ludwig Göransson never disappoints, one of the best composers currently working.

Glad Ryan Coogler chose the IMAX format for this because the film benefits a lot from it, there's even a subtle ratio change mid way.

Acting wise I loved the ing performances the most (but I'd argue Miles Caton is a co-lead with MBJ). Jack O'Connell whom I just saw in Little Fish the other day, was absolutely terrifying.

Script wise the movie's alright, I wish some things were done a bit differently but it gets the point across. Very excited to see what Coogler does next.

The disease wasn't explained fully but it definitely didn't bother me in the film as it is fundamentally about human connection.

I've just came back from Görlitz and Dresden where they shot some of the scenes in the film and I thought it's a good time to rewatch.

It took me two days to watch this in full. I'm sorry but I really do find Wes Anderson movies largely nauseating. Coincidentally, Zero is also how much interest I have in these characters.

The film is beautiful, like a postcard. From the cinematography to the color grading and the set design, everything about it is stunning. I just don't think I like the writing at all. I dislike it maybe slightly less than the last time but that might just my Ralph Fiennes bias talking. I understand not all films need to have great scripts to be compelling but this is just too bland for me personally, the dialogue irks me and the narrative structure fails to make me care in any way.

I'm running out of good things to say about this film so I will say the acting was very good overall. I don't think I'll be revisiting this any time soon. I recommend going to Görlitz to see the locations though.

Magnificent film. Proof we don't need dialogue if the visual language is strong enough although there is dialogue in the film - just in a language we cannot understand. But we do not need to

Stunning animation, I can't believe this was done in Blender. Disney can only dream of their newer works looking this lush. This is a well deserved Oscar.

Flow also contributed to a spike in adoption of black cats which I find incredible. The Flow cat is a symbol of resilience and adaptability, all different species in the film work together towards a common goal which is survival. I have three cats myself so I'm obviously biased but I was deeply moved by the story and its meaning.

Both Phillip and Carol definitely loved each other despite their hardships. Phillip couldn't see how much hurt he caused her and Carol gave him a chance to fix it. Pretty fun! Incredibly amusing this is technically the first ever (?) lesbian ship that is also straight.

Dorothy is very much just a sentient AI with the addition of Brandy being able to transform her consciousness into the film to interact with her. The episode questions Dorothy's autonomy which wanders into uncharted territory of whether she is a real person or just an algorithm. She is real within the context of Hotel Reverie but ultimately she's not the real-life Dorothy who died long before, she's only able to access her memories based on the data provided - how would she know the real life Dorothy was a lesbian, I don't know, since it was never publicly available data.

The more you think about the technology the less sense it makes, but ultimately it's a pretty fun concept that reminds me a bit of Westworld and The Stepford Wives.

A lot of people won't agree with me but I miss when Denis Villeneuve directed movies that made you deeply uncomfortable. Some of his best work relies heavily on tackling difficult subjects (Prisoners, Incendies, Polytechnique, Sicario).

Prisoners is an exploration of what happens when you push someone to their limit. The torture endured was both meaningless and meaningful - acting as catharsis for Keller, even if ultimately he was in the wrong.

How far are you willing to go for your loved ones? I don't think that question can be genuinely answered until something like that happens to you.

Really stellar performances in this film, especially from Paul Dano and Hugh Jackman. I've not read the book yet but I plan on coming back to this film when I do.

Patchy, frankly nonsensical and certainly a product of its time. I probably wouldn't have watched it had it not been for Pat McCabe who picked this film for his birthday to do an intro for, bless him. Was really nice to see late 60s Dublin immortalized on film as well.

This is (unfortunately or not), arguably David Cronenberg's most romantic film.

Despite being twins, Eli and Bev are two very distinct individuals. Eli seemingly being the mean spirited one and Beverly the more rational twin. They're more than the sum of their parts and both unable to realize this, having grown up too codependent on each other.

Dead Ringers tells the story of two souls, so intertwined the separation is near impossible. If one of them dies, the other follows.

I've rewatched this film twice in the course of two weeks and loved it each time. I don't think I've seen a better portrayal of toxic codependency put to screen before.

People often call Mulholland Drive "incomprehensible". I don't really agree with this. But even if so, you can still enjoy a film without fully understanding it. It's about the experience you had.

In my belief, the whole film is mostly a dream. Diane dreams of a world in which her and Camilla are together, a world where they get to meet for the first time again. The second half is the grim reality. Much like in a dream, you really have to immerse yourself in it and not take everything at face value but I love rewatching it and re-discovering all the tiny details that create this extraordinary bigger picture.

I think calling this film an "episode of Riverdale" is a disservice to Riverdale

Messy and somehow really predictable as well. I'll try to review it without spoiling the whole film but some major plot points go completely unresolved to the point where it feels as though they threw away the script mid-shoot.

The budget must've gone into the music which is surprisingly great yet ill fitting for most of the scenes (I mean, CAN's Vitamin C in a pharmacy? Really?). There's also the casual misogyny present throughout the film, which is more in tune with 00s chick flicks than something that was made in 2017. Not even Timothée Chalamet could save this mess, his performance was good but I've seen better from him.

"I don't know if you're a detective or a pervert."

"Well, that's for me to know and you to find out."

Blue Velvet, like David Lynch himself said is "a dream of strange desires wrapped inside a mystery story."

It's also his most 'straightforward' film, depicting the objectification and abuse of women. Sandy represents one end of the spectrum - the traditional "girl next door" type, oblivious, ignorant almost, to the natural order of things. Dorothy is unglamorized nudity and untamed sexuality.

I love watching the film unravel. Jeffrey's loss of innocence and his eventual alignment of values with Frank whom he initially abhorred. He becomes "Dorothy's special friend", just one of many men with violent fantasies or tendencies.

The transformation makes the ending very bittersweet. Dorothy gets her son back, her husband is gone. The robin eating the worm that both Jeffrey and Sandy chuckle at, is also an act of violence.

Wacky science-fiction comedy that, although funny, didn't really click with me and it's one of Bong Joon Ho's weakest films.

If am being honest, the only reason am not giving this 3 stars are the performances. Robert Pattinson was just incredible, his character work is amazing. Loved Naomi Ackie as Natasha. Mark Ruffalo and Toni Colette as a couple - both great, elevated the film by a lot.

The script... well, let's just say I was expecting a character-driven comedy. The concept of the doubles (or 'multiples', as they call them in the film) barely gets explored and instead we got a really patchy alien scenario. Which is a real shame because Robert could've done so much more with this. I understand it's a comedy and it's not supposed to "make sense" but this was just a bit too chaotic, even for me.

The second half feels completely off and rushed in of pacing compared to the first. Maybe I had too high expectations, I don't know. It's kind of like Okja meets Arrival, except not good enough to be either.

I don't know what to make of this. I interpret it as religious - it's apart of the Faith trilogy from Bergman.

By religious, I meant that God in this film isn't present or is completely silent. The silences in the film are filled with emotions begging to be heard. The lack of communication is the driving force of the plot, not just between the characters and the citizens of the town they're in but also between Ester and Anna.

Dealing with the death of a loved one you had a tumulus relationship with is never easy but Anna comes off as cruel, uncaring. The Silence has a strangely lesbian undertone, so much so that I was very surprised to learn the two women are sisters and not ex-lovers. Anna seeks out sexual encounters to push Ester away while her son Jonah wanders around the hotel, not understanding things that are playing out.

The Silence is a very disquieting watch, especially the scenes of Ester's illness progressing, but I hope to come back to this sometime to better understand it. It fills me with emptiness and intrigue.

I saw this at Dublin Film Festival with Pasolini and Ralph Fiennes doing an introduction.

I really tried to like this. I understand the idea was to adapt The Odyssey and turn it into a personal drama as opposed to fantasy but unfortunately the film is unbelievably dull for most of its runtime. Oddly paced, predictable, and uneventful bar the last 20 or so minutes. It's not visually appealing at all either and I don't even if it had a score or not.

Ralph Fiennes as well as Juliette Binoche and Charlie Plummer all gave great performances, I just wish it was in a different film. Ralph looks great and did as much as he could with the material he was given.

I didn't know a lot about the history of military dictatorship in Brazil prior to this film but I still found myself deeply touched by this family story. It reminds me a bit of Denis Villeneuve' Incendies, the portrayal of trauma is similar. I feel like both directors would have a lot to talk about.

The seamless way Walter Salles weaves personal drama with politics is something I ire greatly. I loved the "home video" segments a lot. The music in the film is great as well, I'm a long time MPB fan.

Fernanda Torres is able to convey so much with just her eyes and micro-expressions. The loss of Eunice's husband, the father of her kids, was deeply felt. But she powered through for her kids.

I'm Still Here is about perseverance. Eunice Paiva lived to see the truth behind her husband's death publicly acknowledged. And he could finally rest in peace. His live was cut short but his story, as well as similar stories of that time period, lived on.

I recently managed to see this as a play and I have to say, the satire of Dr. Strangelove stood the test of time almost perfectly.

In fact, it got even better with time, much like fine wine. Politicians, generals all just look out for each other and what they believe is the "common good", whether it may be world peace or fighting the fluoridation of water. The threat of nuclear war has never really went way, just faded into the background. It's a deadly serious comedy.

Stellar performances from everybody. I do love the fact that the titular Doctor Strangelove had maybe five minutes of screen time in total (probably less) and yet the film is named after film. And what a brilliantly weird character he is. In all the different renditions.

I went in without any expectations and came out deeply charmed.

I'd like to start by saying Sarah Snook is a wonderful voice actress and it has been a pleasure to see last year on stage in Dorian Gray. She brought Grace to life effortlessly and allowed us to easily empathize with her.

Memoir Of A Snail is a story about perseverance, which is something I can relate to. It's a very sad story but not a completely hopeless one. I loved the vibrant cast of characters, paired up with the drab backdrop of rural Australia (by the way, they made it look so gray am shocked this isn't set in the UK).

The symbolism of the snail — it never crosses the same trail again, only ever moving forwards — is poignant. We can't dwell on the past too much because it can weight us down to the point where we're trapped in a cage we created ourselves. It's worth going out of your comfort zone. It's worth to care about yourself sometimes.

I also keep thinking about all the strenuous work that goes into stop-motion. It's an art form I greatly appreciate (see: Street Of Crocodiles, Alice), and I'm very happy to see it recognized at major award shows. Memoir Of A Snail is funny, a bit weird, touching and absolutely worth your time.

I only watched this because it's a Denis Villeneuve recommendation and I wish I could personally thank him for this.

Europa is one of the most visually stunning films I've seen in my entire life. I truly cannot believe this isn't a 1950s German film, but a 90s one made by no one other than Lars Von Trier, whose overall work I'm on the fence about.

The script is engaging and well-written, reminds me a bit of Witness for The Prosecution. Jean Marc-Barr delivers a stellar performance as the anxiety-ridden Leopold Kessler. Barbara Sukowa is incredible as well.

The sporadic use of color in Europa is brilliant. I truly would do anything to see this film on a big screen. What a wonderful hidden gem.

Něco z Alenky is absolutely unreal. From the stop motion to the beautiful production design, it's one 86-minute fever dream. It's truly incomparable and I really do mean it when I say it they don't make films like this anymore. The creativity here is booming and you cannot predict what's going to happen at any point.

Švankmajer is a true master in his craft. You could watch this with no subtitles and still understand everything because the visual language completely transcends any spoken word. I do like the little girl's narration and acting a lot though.

This is not a documentary, it's (like billed in the credits) a psychodrama. There's some really interesting narrative choices there and I do see where Villeneuve was going with it. He definitely already had an artistic vision back then.

I wish the narration was in just one language, whether it be French or English and the script just a tiny bit more cohesive. A bit reminiscent of Nolan's Menento, even though REW-FWD predates it.

"Despite knowing the journey and where it leads, I embrace it. And I welcome every moment of it."

After rewatching this film after nearly seven years since my first viewing, I will say it still moves me just as much. I don't want to delve into the similarities between Arrival and Interstellar but to me, they're about the same thing — the value of time you spend with your loved ones. Would you still make the same choices if you knew where they lead, or would you try to change things?

In Arrival, language triumphs over science. The nations work together to solve a common problem. I really do wish the mother-daughter relationship was shown just a bit more but the glimpses we get do a great job. Villeneuve's films, even the seemingly huge sci-fi ones, all rely on human connections, all the different relationships that exist within our world, here on Earth. You cannot underestimate the importance of those relationships. That's what Arrival is trying to convey.

The score in this film is fantastic and really adds to the overall atmosphere. It's also one Amy Adams' best performances.

I don't know what to rate it anymore so for now am only giving it a heart. Beautiful film, one of my all time favorites even after all this time.

The Brutalist d6e2s 2024 - ★★★ (contains spoilers) https://letterboxd.sitesdebloques.org/inceptstellar/film/the-brutalist/ letterboxd-review-794063137 Thu, 30 Jan 2025 13:59:30 +1300 2025-01-29 No The Brutalist 2024 3.0 549509 <![CDATA[

This review may contain spoilers.

It's about the destination, not the journey. In Brady Corbet's case, the destination appears to be The Academy Awards. I'm just wondering how exactly did he get there.

The Brutalist's marketing leads you to believe that anything shot on film and over two hours long must be "the next American epic". Meanwhile you are met with a poorly executed story of a Hungarian-Jewish immigrant, made by someone who isn't either of those things nor particularly cares about portraying those experiences authentically.

The score by Daniel Blumberg is truly masterful and does the lion's share of the work, making up for how shoddy that script really is. I actually feel saddened such beautiful music got wasted on this.

I understand the decision behind the Adrien Brody casting (you need at least a few big names to finance such a project) but I just cannot defend Felicity Jones' bad acting and borderline laughable line delivery. The women in this film generally do not serve much of a purpose but it's worth noting there's multiple sex scenes including a scene of László watching pornography, which I believe was to further rub in your face that he's unfaithful, even though the very second scene we see of him is a sex scene with a prostitute. We get it.

Still, I really wish Erzsébet was played by a Hungarian actress who would not need to have her speech tweaked with AI to be "authentic". I actually find it laughable that the goal here was authenticity, when it's precisely what this film lacks. Much like László's model builds, The Brutalist is hollow at its core. Beautiful on the outside.

I believe there was some kind of grave mistake made in the writing process because there's a whole other film there, buried under the disted nonsense. The Van Buren family story. Guy Pearce was fantastic and I love to see him on the big screen. His story arc, Harrison being ontologically evil, I found very compelling and that is why am choosing to be kinder in my rating than I otherwise would have been. This, and the score inform my three star rating as opposed to just one star.

The intermission makes the whole thing worse because it shows you how weak the second half is in comparison to the first one, which was only decent. I felt like I've already seen this film before even finishing it. You're better off rewatching The Pianist (also with Adrien Brody).

The presence of Israel throughout film is most definitely felt and while I don't think it's outright Zionist I can definitely see why Zionists are co-opting it. The whole "we belong in Israel" sentiment, which I believe in the case of the Tóth family stems from their disappointment with the American Dream, is definitely relevant, relatable to many Zionists as of today. Which is also why I believe The Brutalist will ultimately win Best Picture.

The change of format near the end is reminiscent to Bradley Cooper's Maestro which was also a Best Picture nominee that I did not enjoy.

I'd like to add the cinematography is mostly unremarkable and simply "there" for most of the film's runtime. The best shot is in the opening scene (upside down Statue of Liberty) and there's a few good ones in the sequence in Italy.

Fundamentally, The Brutalist is a really painfully mediocre picture that I would not rewatch unless pressed. I really tried to like it but it instills the same amount of feeling in me as the insurance ad I got in the cinema beforehand. I dare to say it's often worse to be mediocre than to be straight up awful. I can only hope Brady Corbet will write about things more relevant to his own experiences next time, or learn how to do better research.

Really difficult film to watch and review that I've been putting away for a while now. I watched the French version as it's a Québécois story.

I was unaware of the Montreal massacre. I've seen the criticism that the brutality, the violence portrayed is unnecessary, but I don't agree on this. We, the viewers, are meant to feel the fear and discomfort the women felt when faced with the shooter. "I'll send the feminists to their maker" is a line that will stay with me for a very long time.

This is a feminist film about a deeply misogynistic crime that was made with permission and for the victims, as well as the survivors. I think the closing scene further proves it. Simply existing as a woman in the world, is an act of bravery itself.

It's remarkable what Villeneuve managed to achieve in such a short amount of time and I believe he's one of the all time greats. I'm really impressed with how he directs women in his early work and I really wish we'd get another moving film such as Polytechnique or Incendies.
