]]>While it looks fairly good and features both competent actors in front of the camera and filmmakers behind it, Fountain of Youth is a sloppily written and derivative action-adventure film with central performances that miss the mark by quite a lot. As someone who normally really enjoys this subgenre of films (and who tends to have a pretty good time with Guy Ritchie films), I have to say that this is a pretty significant disappointment to me.

]]>When Mission: Impossible first took the leap from being a 1960s and 1970s TV series to being a cinematic franchise capable of rivalling both the most iconic spy thriller films and action extravaganzas in 1996, it was Tom Cruise’s first film as a producer. Now, 29 years later, Cruise has become Hollywood’s biggest movie star, and the film series is supposedly (if the marketing and promotion are to be believed) about to conclude with the aptly titled Mission: Impossible – The Final Reckoning, the eighth film in the series. The film features both some of the best sequences in the entire film series, but also one of the messiest opening acts of any of the films.

]]>In 2021, Netflix pleased horror fans with the nostalgic horror-slasher trilogy of films, adapting R.L. Stine’s Fear Street series from director Leigh Janiak. Janiak’s films all had clear style, grisly horror sequences, and well-done references to their cinematic inspirations. They were all quite solid films that got their hooks into a certain audience, and it put Fear Street on the map for Netflix. So much so that I had, honestly, been looking forward to seeing how Netflix would follow up the relatively successful trilogy. Four years later (and, notably, without Leigh Janiak in the director’s chair), we now finally have that next step. Fear Street: Prom Queen also tries to be a nostalgic slasher flick, but it fails in most departments and, frustratingly, fumbles the goodwill that the first three films had earned.

I won't play pretend and claim that I know more about Bob Dylan than I do (to be frank, I grew up in a household with more love for Elvis, Johnny Cash, the Beatles, and Queen), but I do like quite a few of his songs. For instance, like I presume most people do, I think very highly of "The Times They Are A-Changin'." However, as I don't know all that much about the enigmatic artist that this film revolves around, I found this to be a very effective introduction to him and his influence. But, as others have said, I don't really feel like I know all that much more about him after having seen the film, which, to be fair, may have been intentional. Still, its plot is very limited or sparse given its ballooning runtime, which is song-heavy and story-light -- though I've no doubt that people more familiar with him got more out of it on first viewing than I possibly could. I will say that, I found it slightly odd that, for a film about an artist who created some of the most iconic protest songs, the film itself had so little to say.
It's interesting that with this 'music biopic,' Mangold opted for only a small portion of Dylan's career rather than condensing a huge career, which many biopics tend to do. I think it really works in the film's favor, despite the fact that it does sometimes feel... 'aimless' is a harsher word than I intend it to be, but it does kind of describe it. Although, yes, it's a different approach to a music biopic, it isn't without its tropes with the 'ups and downs of an artist' and 'industry individuals trying to control the artist and their output' being familiar elements. That said, I still found it to be quite enjoyable. It's a nice music-heavy package that looks terrific and Mangold is an expert at delivering. The wonderful performances also help a lot. Chalamet said he was reaching for greatness, and you can tell. It's the kind of full-bodied movie star biopic work that you go to the movies for, but he's also surrounded by excellence as Monica Barbaro, Edward Norton (probably his best performance in, at least, nine or ten years), and Boyd Holbrook (I could watch an entire film with Timothee and Boyd just talking) are all also so good that you can't take your eyes off them. I'll also throw in a special shoutout to Scoot McNairy, who gets a lot out of very little screentime.

]]>Indeed, I, too, ed in the trend of rewatching Rogue One following the conclusion of the final season of Andor, a series which is arguably some of the very best Star Wars storytelling of my lifetime and possibly ever. Gilroy's sharply written, politically resonant, and historically conscious spin-off series definitely makes the film work better for me. When I first saw this, Diego Luna's Cassian Andor felt like a slightly indistinct side character, but now his moments in this mean so much more, and I genuinely had to hold back tears when Cassian Andor's story ends here.
Does the film still have issues? Yeah, it's got too many needless wink-at-the-camera cameos and the like, and the CG faces are still problematic. That said, the strong elements make it so that the greatness definitely outweighs the problems. The cinematography is terrific, the clarity of the aerial battles is top-notch filmmaking, and I still, mostly, really enjoy the core line-up of characters, with Diego Luna now functioning, as mentioned, much better.
]]>Sigh. I wanted to like this a lot more than I did. Yes, it has some really great action sequences (including the extended night club sequence), but, boy, it was so difficult for me to really get into this movie and be emotionally invested. The structure and pacing of the first hour are detrimental to the overall experience. So many characters are poorly set up and have very little to them. It's such a bummer that a film that, in a way, has all the right ingredients, including top-tier action, ultimately fails to gel together due to the pacing, structure, generic narrative, and paper-thin characters that overcrowd the film and its indistinct and drab visuals. Though, of course, the strong action and notable cast make this, at least, an interesting watch. I'm not sure I'd classify it as outright bad, but it shouldn't be this unremarkable. I think it'll also end up as one of the most forgettable films of the year, and a gritty Tom Hardy action flick from the director of The Raid should be so much more than that.

]]>Frankly, Another Simple Favour, ultimately, just ends up feeling a little bit too convoluted (with too many twists), a little bit too 'been there, done that,' and, frankly, a little bit too overlong. These won't necessarily be cardinal sins for all fans of the first film, but they do make it feel much less special.
]]>Jake Schreier’s Thunderbolts* features a ragtag group of mostly C-list heroes or anti-heroes, and therefore, their grouping seems like an odd choice as the big film to end a narrative phase on. Nevertheless, the film is a proper example of what Marvel does best, which is to create great dynamics and, in that process, frontload the development of an emotional investment in these characters, no matter how unknown they may be. Like Guardians of the Galaxy before it, Thunderbolts* deals with human themes in sincere and mature ways (this time with a focus on mental health and the importance of a system), while still keeping a healthy dose of comedy that pairs well with it. Though it is a team-up film, it is also smartly built around an emotional movie star performance from Florence Pugh that elevates the film significantly. Surprisingly, this film basically makes you believe that the side characters from Cate Shortland’s Black Widow ought to be at the center of the MCU going forward.

For this year's ranking, I'm adding comedy specials, but they will not be included in my final 'official' top ten films of the year-list, even though they may be in the top 10 here.
Although A Cure for Wellness, Beware the Slenderman, Bright Lights: Starring Carrie Fisher and Debbie Reynolds, Colossal, Lady Macbeth, Raw, Split, The Belko Experiment, and The Lost City of Z all had their world premieres at festivals in 2016, they weren't released officially to the public until 2017, therefore they count as 2017 films in my book.
Also, seeing as Personal Shopper was only released at festivals and in two countries ( and Belgium in December) in 2016, I've decided to classify it as a 2017 film.

]]>I'm experimenting with writing canons on Danish cinema, or the like, so this is my first attempt. For this first list, I am saying that the total list must have no more than 20 films.
Criteria to consider:
- International Recognition (Cannes, EFA, BAFTA, or Academy Awards nominations).
- National box office (i.e. most watched Danish films in theaters).
- Cultural imprint (films that have left an imprint on the culture, with quotes, memorable characters, or the like).
- Remade (i.e. was eventually popular enough for an English-language remake).
To count as Danish, films must be one of the following:
- 1) In Danish.
- 2) Be directed by a Danish filmmaker.
- 3) Be a Danish production/co-production.
Trier. Cannes (Palme d'Or). EFA. Oscars. Danish Director.
Fly.
ATJ. Cultural imprint.
Scherfig. Dogme95. EFA. Danish. Danish Director.
Bostrup. Box Office Top 5 2000-2009.
Joof. Box Office Top 5 2000-2009.
Cultural imprint.
Bier. Box Office Top 10 2000-2009.

Trier & Leth. EFA.

]]>Shared the 'Grand Prix du Festival International du Film' with 10 other films.
Ever since the La La Land/Moonlight split, I've been fascinated with those moments when BAFTA and AMPAS don't agree on the best film of the year. So, I decided to go through the lists of winners and note when they disagreed.
Important Note: Given certain films weren't necessarily released in time to earn nominates at both ceremonies in the same year, sometimes films from 19XX won the BAFTA top award, while the same film was nominated or won at the Oscars in a different year (e.g. see notes for Jean de Florette)
Interesting Facts:
- None of the Godfather films ever won Best Film w/ BAFTA.
- Martin Scorsese, who, bafflingly, only has one Best Picture winner at the Oscars, has multiple BAFTA Best Film winners.
- A tie in Best Film in 1961!
- Important to note that while the Oscars have been declaring winners since the 1920s, BAFTA's 1st ceremony was in the 1940s, so there are obviously fewer winners.

Like last year, I'm adding comedy specials, but they will not be included in my final 'official' top ten films of the year-list, even though they could theoretically be in the top 10 here.
Although some films may have had their world premieres at festivals in 2017, if they weren't released officially to the public until 2018, then they count as 2018 films in my book. In the case of You Were Never Really Here, it gets a little bit tricky. Read the notes for an explanation of why it is on this list.
Added: March 2018. Outside of festivals, the film was only released in a small handful of countries in 2017. Of those countries one of them was one of the three countries of production (), but the latter two production countries (United Kingdom and the United States, the former of which is the native country of the writer-director) only got the film in 2018. Thus it is a 2018 film, in my book.

Although some films may have had their world premieres at festivals in 2019, they may still count as 2020 films in my book.
Please Note: It looks like Letterboxd has removed Andrés Clariond Rangel & Gabriel Nuncio's behind-the-scenes Roma-documentary Camino a Roma/Road to Roma, which I reviewed back in February, as it is no longer appearing on this list. To read my review, click here.
This just in: Road to Roma is back on the list! What a rollercoaster of emotions.
Also, I love Hamilton, but I don't think of it as a movie, so it won't be on this list. Sorry.

]]>Listed from newest to oldest, this list is made up of the films that I have either given a 10 out of 10-score to through a full written review or which I have indicated are 10 out of 10 films for me through my ongoing list of film scores and grades on my blog.
For what it is worth, 10 out of 10 does not mean perfect to me, rather it indicates that I think the film in question is a masterpiece deserving of my highest recommendation. In the future, I may include a list of near-masterpieces, indicating films that aren't 9s but nine-point-somethings.

]]>Like every year, I try to watch at least 31 horror films, horror comedies, thrillers, documentaries about the genre, or the like in the month of October. It should be said that these aren't necessarily films that I like, but because I like to see October as a month for horror, I do like to watch or rewatch a wide variety of films in -- or somewhat related to -- the genre this time of year.
This is a list of those types of films that I watched in October 2023. At the very least, I try to see one for each day, but, if I know a day is coming up wherein I won't be able to find the time, I may choose to watch two of these types of films in one day.

]]>Netflix keeps on releasing new films every week, and its original film release goal for each and every year is astounding. So, this list is my personal ranking of the Netflix films or documentaries that I have seen.
Do note that some 'Netflix Films' may have been distributed theatrically in some markets, even though it is a 'Netflix Film' in select regions. And these films may not all be available on Netflix worldwide. For example, Annihilation is a Netflix film in most markets outside of the United States. Also, I'm not including stand-up or comedy specials here, but, rest assured, I love Bo Burnham's INSIDE

it's simple. I try to watch 31 Halloween-appropriate movies during the 31 days of October.
So, what is a Halloween-appropriate movie? Well, in my mind, that includes horror films, horror comedies, films that take place on/around Halloween, horror anthology episodes/films, and select thrillers (I felt like including them, ultimately).
See notes to find out when I watched it.
