Refreshing to see attendees interviewed in addition to performers, it really helped paint the picture of the time and place. Incredible footage of not only Sly, Stevie, Gladys and Nina but also the deeply inspiring gospel of Mahalia Jackson and Mavis Staples. My introduction to Max Roach so I'll be on an internet rabbit hole studying his playing. Mind blowing that this footage was sitting in a basement. What else is out there waiting to be unearthed?

My favorite parts of this film were when you see how seriously they took themselves despite how their attitudes were perceived and reported on. Getting choked up and nostalgic at their "museum", practicing very hard for their reunion shows, being genuinely disappointed that Crooked Rain, Crooked Rain didn't sell on the same level as Nevermind... they always actually gave a shit.

I wore headphones on this rewatch which really drew my attention to the details in the sound design and ambient noise. You can't help but feel freezing cold.

In coming back to this after so much time it's clearer to me what has drawn me to Lynch's work for much of my life. The themes of anxiety and guilt he rips from the subconscious and splatters on the screen are struggles I understand a bit better in my life now.…
