they’re going to try and tell you that all of the flashbacks are unearned, or that there’s no point in rehashing the story of the entity because you heard enough of it in dead reckoning. or they’ll tell you that there’s too much focus on a wildly unrealistic threat and a stagnant first hour.

and i’ll just say that I cried like a baby twice and i saw incredible things and i laughed and i think that the best movies require a leap of faith and baby i’m trust falling one last time. they really did it!!! this movie has everything that makes mission so amazing: gargantuan set pieces and funny dialogue and a family. everything’s even, the universe settled. ethan hunt is the lisan al-gaib.

actual perfect background movie. here's a running list of dc thoughts i had about this movie since i've lived here for a year!

- i really appreciate running the mall at dawn. i believe that is the only appropriate time to monument. but then again the last time i went to the jefferson memorial i was fighting for my life with like a thousand people who decided to me in my psychosis of waking up at 6am in order to see a very disappointing sunrise over the cherry blossoms
- are the SHIELD headquarters ON roosevelt island? why did they decide on that? you can't do that
- i don't think it makes sense for the cap exhibit to be in air and space and not american history. like i understand that they probably decided upon that because the zoom in of the planes is cooler than what they have going on at american history but like idk. lazy i think.
- looked it up and learned that they filmed most of this in cleveland. lazy, but that will not stop my commentary
- making an educated guess on where steve lives based on the running on the mall and going to work on roosevelt island. i don't think he would metro to run but that only kind of narrows down neighborhoods. i'm a normal person and walked like six miles from the northeast to the capitol, so we can set that as a limit. mixed use neighborhood with mostly townhomes has to be like dupont or logan circle.
- not a dc comment but the elevator fight scene is so good. chris evans is operating at like an insane level of cool there. rare form.
- and what mall do i think they're at? 100% pentagon city. one of the worst malls there is.

- very funny to chose to film in cleveland but then just be like we can't refuse a good opportunity to film outside the hotel that's right by the white house that i can't the name of
- non dc thought, this movie is quite literally just minority report. they just did minority report again.

i loved my mature childhood, and everytime i watch this movie i can't help but think about how lucky i am to have had the infleunces from my sisters and my cousins that i had. it took me forever to understand what a blessing it is to have so many people looking out for you and giving you the leeway to still explore and learn things for yourself.

no one does an uncomfortably close, pore-bearing shot like de palma does. the pacing of this movie is incredible and the character beats for ethan are so strong right off the bat it's amazing.

thirty years later and tom cruise is still doing that little tilt of his head. i am going to be an emotional wreck when this is all over. thinking about how when i went on retreat in high school my dad wrote me a letter that was mission impossible themed and i had to restrain myself from bursting into laughter while everyone around me was crying at their letters. shoutout george.

still such a moving and evolving and loving portrait of a life focused on making the most of every moment. begging to be understood the way you want to be. love is the most divine healer, now and always. please do yourself a favor and watch this immediately.

I felt too sick to get ashes today, so I decided to start Lent off in a different way.

Prayer can be a frustrating thing, you can talk and talk and talk and it never feels like anyone is listening. It feels like silence. Worse yet is not even talking at all, because how could you ever expect a response if there's nothing to respond to? In theology this semester we talk about Providence. Providence is not fate, it's not determinism. Providence is God's steady hand on the wheel of life, always trying to steer humanity closer to his kingdom. Sometimes that wheel steers you into the desert, or the swamp, or to your breaking point.

You can't run away from Providence, but you can avoid it. You can cover your eyes, block your ears, jump out of the car. But the world keeps moving, you will do what you will do. Can you follow the car on the road, its path clearly marked, or will you pretend you do not see the tracks, and try to forge a new way through the wilderness. It does not do well to be alone.

This felt undoubtably influenced by Terence Malick, but maybe that's just because I think of him as being a director outward about faith and muddled beliefs. Maybe also because of how it lingers, how Rodrigues' voice lilts through the frames like a stream of consciousness, especially in the scene where his face flickers with the icon of Jesus. I hope that Scorsese gets around to filming his movie on Jesus, and that Malick finishes his soon. I want my mother to see this.

This Lent I'm trying to write a lot. Usually I go vegetarian, but this year that doesn't feel healthy. I want to write and spill everything out of myself asking God to listen, I want to be okay with the silence. If he always responded loud, there would be no faith. I've always loved lent, especially Holy Week and Ash Wednesday because of how bad they make you feel. Of course, there's time for celebration and the resurrection, but it's about taking time to reflect on what good you're doing and how your actions determine who you are. That it does all matter, no time for wasting time.

I’ve been an architecture student for a whole semester now, and I had this very viscerally disgusting lecture a few weeks in where a guest professor started a talk on what was presumably ing computers to produce sophisticated models of buildings and render ventilation and plumbing systems that escalated alarmingly quickly into talk of how beneficial AI can be when deg. Everyone in the room seemed to be hanging onto her every word, but I just kind of tuned out after that. I thought it was irresponsible, I thought it was appalling, and I thought it was irrevocably different than everything that had drawn me to architecture in the first place.

I imagined architecture to be the way it is in The Brutalist. Truly important buildings, like Fallingwater or the Sagrada Familia or even the Eiffel Tower could only come from pure inspiration. They could only come from a singular mind, driven to put things on earth that which most people could never think of. But then the buildings are there, and they’re undeniable, and everything that the architect dreamed of comes to fruition. You conceive of a building thinking that it could change everything. It rarely does, but you believe it could. You could talk yourself into believing that it’s possible. This divine spark of something that makes your work worthwhile, that makes you deserving of pouring a foundation, raising the walls, planning out the slant of light.

Divine inspiration. Do you think it’s real? I like to think it is. Every artist has found themselves dreaming at night of their work. I’ve been dreaming of Adobe Illustrator and changing line weights and mountains of hot glue. You want to wake up in the morning with the world at your fingertips. Or with the will to reach out a little beyond yourself and grab it.

But I think most artists dream this dream too big. If you’re Laszlo, and someone opens the door enough for you to see a crack of light, you couldn’t possibly stop yourself from wanting to see the whole sky. You could get blinded by the sun, if you weren’t careful, if you weren’t ready for it. But wouldn’t it be worth it to try and see all that blue? Even if you get burnt or blurry eyed. God, I would chase that light too, I know I would. Most successful people have a big appetite, they want and they want and they want until everything is falling off their plate. How do you balance what you want and what you are?

The American Dream and the artistic dream are one in the same. Success, renown, comfort, people having your back. Making something where nothing was. Opening the door to the sky, forcing the light to be under your domain. Creating a new life.

I was floored by the Brutalist when I saw it a month and a half ago. It kind of felt like I’d never seen a movie before. It’s kind of all-encoming. Tossing you this way and that, strapping you in for a long ride through every human emotion imaginable. Cradling you through the hurt and laughing with you in the joy that comes from discovering a new world full of possibility. Architecture so thoroughly examined and loved that it reminded why I’m putting myself through all-nighters assembling scale models and writing 3000 words on viewpaths through cathedrals. What I love about artists, whether they’re actors or directors or architects, is that they care. They care about beauty and aesthetics and swelling music and quiet moments. They care about the way the earth feels below you, they have the power to make you love.

Sometimes I talk myself into believing that movies were made for me. My beautiful Philadelphia suburbs (even if it’s actually Hungary), the way the library opens up to say hello, coal and steel montages, commanding music and an American dream. I don’t know why I waited so long to write about this. I don’t know what I thought would change. I was waiting to wake up one morning and have this written for me. I was waiting for inspiration. But sometimes you need a push. Most times you push yourself. I’m falling off a cliff right now, and the view is Doylestown.

i'll be completely fine through the suicide attempt and then just start sobbing uncontrollably at "I've had a rough year, dad." "i know you have chassie."

watched this while building models for my architecture studio and reached my full nolan-nerd potential.

as a movie about architecture this rules. wish i didn't have to follow the laws of physics or like try and make the tiny wood sticks glue straight onto my foam board and could instead just like bend things in my dream world. maybe in like twenty years we'll be there.

remains a movie with like actually relatively zero stakes, and you know what??? it doesn't need any!!! just sit down and turn your brain off and let christopher nolan lull you into a masterpiece

this changes every time i watch this but my fav characters this time around were turk and virgil. like perfect comedic acting throughout and nearly rivals their performance as leaders of a migrant worker strike in thirteen. this is the only perfect movie.

I ugly cried like three times during this while one of my roommates was having her Valentine's date in our living room.

I don't think it's physically possible for me to not like a Bridget Jones movie, but what a moving story of learning to love life again and live life again after grief. It's about giving yourself enough wiggle room to figure things out on your own and embrace whatever life wants to give you. I wish I could have watched it in theaters and cried four times instead.

Deeply beautiful and still so so funny. Ugh. Ten more of these please. I must connect with my inner 40 year old mum.

this movie makes me feel so horrible so naturally i rewatch every few months. mundanity is like my sweet spot in life i fear, and this reminds me of taking the train home and looking out the window towards the delaware river. i have no idea why

but actually i connected with this on such a deep level because literally sometimes it does just feel as if the entire world in going to end tomorrow or next week or in ten years and maybe if it doesn't end for everyone and it just ends for you then it's just as bad. and how do you pretend to not be thinking that, why am i afraid of something that's not there. why did i convince myself that i was going to die in my sleep two nights ago because i imagined that our electric stove was somehow having a gas leak when it was just my roommate making biscuits. wtf are we doing here.

david lynch, what can you even say.
sandy talking about her dream and the idea of love always being this strong and overpowering force that can overcome darkness, that's kind of the thesis of lynch. in twin peaks especially with the line from major briggs where he says that the greatest fear he has is that love isn't enough.

i hope that love is enough, and i think that david lynch believed that it was. i hope that he's at peace, and there's so much more to see

stone cold classic. forget the cgi monkey, the theme for this is the greatest thing that robbie williams has given society
