Mission: Impossible – The Final Reckoning

2025

★★½ Watched

Soon after the movie started, I realized I had made a mistake. Over the past few weeks, I had watched every MI movie to get caught up before seeing this in the theater. Unfortunately, I shouldn’t have watched the rest of the series, because this movie showed me all the high points and explained anything important to me in great detail, and in some cases, multiple times. There’s not even a fun opening sequence like the Wolf Blitzer bit. After…

Final Destination Bloodlines

2025

★★★½ Watched

I had a lot of fun with this cinematic memento mori. There’s a strong theme of not fearing death so much that you forget to live here. It’s entertaining, funny, and has some truly gruesome kills.

On the other hand, I am not sure how I feel about the idea of entire bloodlines of people being fated to die violently because a previous generation was spared. Gives it a genocidal edge that I am just not going to think about much further.

Harakiri

★★★★★ Liked Watched

Simply exceptional filmmaking and storytelling. Decided to finally watch it on a whim and it’s just the reminder that “movies are good, actually” that I needed. It does to samurai mythology what Unforgiven would later do to the Western, reminding that “honor among samurai is just a facade.”

Mission: Impossible – Dead Reckoning

2023

★★★ Watched

The writing sucks this time, coming across as exposition dump after exposition dump written by an AGI true believer, but the stunts are spectacular. At least now I am all caught up for the new one.

Late Night with the Devil

2023

★★★ 4

Late Night with the Devil is the story of a fateful night in 1976 when a late-night talk show hosts a live demonic summoning as a ratings stunt. It starts with a TCM-like narration from Michael Ironside, setting up the movie as the recently recovered master tape from that night, supplemented with behind-the-scenes footage (that covers the commercial breaks). David Dastmalchian is great as the desperate late-night host, willing to do anything to become number one in his time slot.…

Longlegs

2024

★★★★ Liked 7

Maika Monroe is Lee Harker, a gifted young FBI agent on the trail of a suspected serial killer who leaves no clues other than a cryptic note signed Longlegs(Nic Cage). Written and directed by Osgood Perkins(son of Anthony Perkins), Longlegs is framed as an homage to the serial killer films that really peaked in the 90s with Silence of the Lambs and Seven. David Fincher’s influence is all over this film, from the premise to the visuals and shot composition.

The fascinating…
