Samuel’s review published on Letterboxd:
I will follow Jake Gyllenhaal through the gates of hell for just about any cause but there is no doubt in my mind that this movie could have been better without that ending. The last 5 minutes fucking suck balls and the whole movie suffers for it. Genuine Spielbergian blessing/curse type movie where the premise and sentiments are exactly what you need and it's cut really fine and necessary but it just can't help itself. I can ignore the slight militarism propaganda and the splurge of exposition, but that Hollywood trope of 'but he gets to live!' is so so cheap. Gains a lot of points for bringing the Live Die Repeat formula to the table in such a confident way. Honestly amazed at it's editing, it's thriller elements and obviously Jake's incredible ability to 180° a character arc (that's typically generic in these scenarios) into a believable, honest, and heroic person all inside 85 minutes.
