I wanted to watch No Country for Old Men, but they didn’t have subtitles and if they thought I could hear Anton’s sultry whispers without them they had another think coming. The girl next to me had our window up the entire time even though the only view for 9.5 hours was a blistering, eye-watering expanse of white so intense that the attendants came by and told everybody to put them down but she just pulled it up again later. I don’t know how she could see her tv screen. But she was nice so I can’t complain. But I will. Anyways I love when movies have American monuments still standing after an apocalypse it’s so funny. The Washington Monument was reinforced to withstand nuclear fallout as it should be. The other day I was thinking Chicago is so superior, NY doesn’t even have a recognizable building to its name. Then I ed Empire State but it took me a while and that’s how you know. Thank god those binoculars are still working.

]]>Watching with a relatively quiet audience was like watching those Friends clips of Ross without the laugh track. Lowkey very upsetting movie. Austin and Craig are clearly not dissimilar, Austin just knows how to mask better. I like how we’re shown Austin locking in on several occasions, turning it on for the weather report and for his real life. Craig just can’t.

]]>BlackBerry the Show the Movie (limited series on amc+). Such an electric natural rhythm to this, even with 16 extra minutes of padding. I love his guerilla-style filmmaking of (quoting Matt Johnson here) feeling as if the camera “found” the action, as opposed to it feeling like it was placed there. I love the arc of phrases in here, of which there are 3 main ones: “co-ceo,” “good enough,” and “because they’re idiots.” “Co-ceo” we see their cohesion forming and disintegrating, “good enough” we see the loss of Mike’s principles, “because they’re idiots” we see hubris running rampant behind this entire endeavor. I love when the light from the Apple screen strikes Mike and Doug and washes them out.
I love Matt Johnson’s filmmaking philosophy that you can see spread throughout all of his work of turning your weaknesses into strengths, which he aptly rephrases for this film as “turning your bugs into features.” I’m interested to see how he continues to reshape this philosophy as he moves out of the underdog umbrella he’s been operating under for over a decade into more (relatively) commercial filmmaking with a bigger team.
Papa!
]]>It wasn’t a full house, but judging by our laughter shaking the dust from the eaves it sure sounded like one. The heaping plate of cookies as the only relative at the cancer group was a great character touch right off the bat. Extremely stressful movie.

On a redemption watch remains borderline incomprehensible on nearly every level, mainly script and character. Not sure what they lost between MI7 and here but everyone feels changed and stripped. Luther dies for all intents and purposes narratively and physically offscreen within the first 20 minutes, a crucial character we and Ethan have grown with for 25 years now. Gabriel has inexplicably disintegrated into a maniacal, anime villain caricature of himself, which ittedly gives us my favorite parts of the movie but it is bizarre to witness. Hayley Atwell has ceased to be the student learning from the teacher and instead is now desperately in love with Tom. Her uses include quick reflexes and to revive him with "breast vision" (a term Nash coined). You wouldn't catch Tom’s other best friend Benji lying naked with him in that tent caressing him all over. They throw Pom all over Benji too after she performs the surgery. Why? What happened to these characters personalities? Shea Whigham the goat is reduced to only a few inconsequential minutes of screentime, almost all of which is wasted on that ridiculous retcon. Benji I felt the most fondness for, more than I've had for him in recent installments. I think he did some great acting during the surgery, and he felt like an indispensable member of this long-lasting team.
I'd say the first hour is frighteningly odd but it continues to be so whenever anyone is talking even for the rest of it. If you don't want to rely on words you can rely on action, and that puts a lot of strain on these characters when no one besides Tom is given the chance to perform much action. Tom's action and drive once again remains the strength of the series, but one man can only carry so much runtime on his back. The power of love giving the protagonist strength is one of the oldest tricks in the book, but this script deploys it so clumsily. I also did not feel The Entity at work, outside of those odd fanatic scenes that never come into play, and thus the stakes never felt tangible to me. Nothing felt like the sum of our choices, especially when left open so unsatisfyingly. Frustrating to watch.
I’m trying to think of a word to encapsulate this and right now I’m landing on Upsetting. Confused and crestfallen on how we ended up here after such a long and illustrious run of the series I love so much. Hearing negative reviews beforehand did not daunt me and I was ready to revel in this last caper, but wow. The 2 big stunt pieces were awesome, and there was a part at the end that was so wildly bizarre I momentarily lost control of my body. But mostly it was scary how lifeless I found this to be throughout its entire runtime. Countless baffling moments. Wish they gave the king a better send off and a better script.
Today’s Davenport quirks: 1) First 5 minutes were a black screen that occasionally flashed images, 2) In the last 10 minutes two kids came in, walked through the almost entirely empty theater, and sat directly next to us loudly opening candy and slurping drinks before leaving 5 minutes later, 3) The older couple we walked out with after asked us if we thought the glasses made any difference because they couldn’t tell. We didn’t quite have the heart to tell them it wasn’t in 3D.
Swan was mogging like his life depended on it. And it did. Windows stunned. Wore my baseball jersey as an honorary Fury tonight. Setting your movie at 4am must be convenient for location scouting.

]]>“I saw this attempt at tagging himself, to fix his identity by marking it upon some external event; to make some positive sense of his crash.”
After now having read the book (thank you Alli for rec!) it struck me that while James spends 250 pages stretching out every sordid detail of his thoughts on the stitches of vinyl or scraps of metal or other people besides his wife that he wants to stick it into, the only time he its to any semblance of guilt, denial, “perversity,” “depravity,” etc is when expressing his feelings towards Vaughn. Something to think about… Unbelievably incredible casting. Soooo good in a theater! Was thinking about what Cronenberg said in his q&a that his sex scenes are really just dialogue scenes. I love Holly Hunter’s voice, she sounds just like Donna Tartt.
