I was born with a unique sensitivity to music and I don’t know if there’s a name for it but I’ll explain it to you. So basically any slow-ish rhythm triggers something in my brain that makes me cry when I hear it and not in a normal way like wow this song is so sad I think I’ll cry now it’s more like you could play a jingle for Honey Nut Cheerios (part of a complete breakfast) at a slow tempo of -000.5 (whatever that means) and I would instantly hurl which sounds like a joke but it’s not it makes it really difficult for me to get into new music. Phoebe Bridge? Fuck off. ABBA remains the only artist I can listen to safely and even then I’ll still cry during certain songs of theirs (though a generous sum of their most heartbreaking music also contain the sickest and most danceable feel-good beats). “Somewhere Over The Rainbow” is one of my favorite songs ever and I can’t even listen to it. But I can listen to ABBA. And listen to ABBA I always will

July 17th… what a night!

It was thirty hours past by bedtime when I started writing this and I had mascara covering my very high and very pretty cheekbones from crying so hard but I need my feelings forever immortalized through my Letterboxd or else I’ll die

I fell in love with A Quiet Place years ago because I was moved by the love at its core. I adored that the heart of this alien invasion horror was a poignant tale of family — of humanity; how we grieve together and take care of each other, the sacrifices we make and the risks we take for the people we love. A Quiet Place: Day One brought all those feelings back to the surface for me, but in its own individual way. The Abbotts’ were a family, Sam and Eric were complete strangers — but the bond those two formed across the short time they shared was just as important, just as meaningful, and I found everything about their journey really beautiful and touching. There is so much pain in our real world, we don’t need Death Angels when we already have them in our governments — but there is so much good, too, and so often that good is found through the people we meet by the slightest of chances. The people who become family. Sam and Eric, for me, reflected what I already see in our communities without the (literal) bloodthirsty aliens — people helping each other, forming connections through shared struggle and working together to make the best of it. There’s nothing wrong with clinging to a stranger, and we should be encouraging the next generations coming into this big, scary world to do so too. We’re all in this together.

The bar scene… ❤️‍🩹❤️‍🩹❤️‍🩹 extremely fond of the last twenty minutes. While of course there’s going to be some action in a film like this, I didn’t feel that it was overdone and the quiet moments (no pun intended) were my favorite. Lupita Nyong'o is a dream to watch take in the world around, I felt her fear and understood her motivations; I empathized with her quest to find a sense of freedom and choice in the face of her impending death from cancer. I thought she was incredibly brave. I loved the emphasis on the little things we too often take for granted, things as simple and human as pizza. Nothing is going to stop me from ordering a cheese pizza for my family to share tonight (with garlic and pesto if I’m feeling nasty)

The true creature of this feature: FRODO!!!!!!! I’m glad he got a slice of cold pizza for himself. A kiss to to his actors, Schnitzel and Nico, and a kiss to Lupita Nyong'o’s cat: Yoyo. The story of her having a fear of cats before working with them for this film is super sweet. 💝

Still swooning over Eric’s attempt to bring Sam joy in a place that held deep significance for her, I wasn’t familiar with Joseph Quinn’s game. Schnitzel the Cat has an Instagram, by the way. Schnitzel the Cat has a brother named StanLee who played the bodega cat we briefly meet in this film, by the way. I love Schnitzel the Cat more than words can possibly describe

So happy this had such a strong emotional impact on me. Definitely my horror flick of the year, which probably isn’t a surprise because I love Alien, also involving a beautiful woman and a beautiful cat!

Worth the watch for two beautiful, intimate performances from “Rachel Squared”! Relief washed through my body like a rainbow after the storm when the two of them finally got down to kissing I could not stand to see them look at one another with large, yearning eyes of love and lust and pain and not pin the other to the nearest available surface it. was. torture.

No more lesbians trapped in institutionally obligated loveless marriages, many more lesbians finding their freedom to choose where they want to be and who they want to be there with. My heart is heavy when I watch a film like this and when I think about queer women around the world who are made to choose between faith and desire — not just desire, but true happiness. I’m grateful for stories like this and I’m grateful for women and I’m grateful for stolen kisses backlit by sunshine.

Wish more time was spent exploring Ronit’s love of photography and how she views the world through it. I loved that moment by her and Esti’s favorite tree, where they shared their first kiss. It’s called Longlegs but his legs are regular size. Just good old-fashioned Nicolas Cage legs. This wouldn’t normally be a problem, Nicolas has a great pair of pegs, a sexy set of walkers — but I went in expecting oversized appendages and practical effects and I got Santa Claus and some dolls from his workshop (all with regular-sized legs). This wouldn’t normally be a problem, the jolly man and I go way back, but I was hoping for something more, especially when marketing had me convinced his reveal was going to send my heart rate on a one-way trip to Paradise and make me gumdrop my pants so hard I’d launch myself into the ceiling of the theater. This didn’t happen, which is excellent news for the theater staff, but disappointing news for me.

SHE ROCKED HIS WORLD AND TURNED IT INTO THE FILMS HE’S SPENT HIS ENTIRE LIFE ADORING. SHE GAVE HIM ADVENTURE AND HE GAVE HER KINDNESS AND COMPANIONSHIP. 

Cillian Murphy and Lucy Liu… insane chemistry. Like obviously they’re both super fucking gorgeous but their chemistry, only Cillian’s natural Irish song could have elevated it. So many people use film as a means to escape and imagine a more colorful life — what a blessing to find that person who brings color into yours. Film is a reflection of us and life is a movie if you look around and adventure is everywhere. I’m gonna go write a love letter to movies and romance and Lucy Liu‘s infectious laughter!

It felt wrong to stream this, I should have rented it from a video store and met the love of my life while doing so. But there’s always tomorrow for falling in love with a side of nude hang-gliding. Every day is an adventure when there’s love.

Loved the energy of the opening, would love to see a version of this where Lucy doesn’t agree to work for George until much later in the film so there’s more of that banter & back-and-forth as she takes her protests of these corporations to new lengths do you feel what I’m feeling. Really committing to the “we’ve been on opposing sides but we’ve grown rather fond of each other so let’s decide to help one another now” approach would make George’s #change of heart / standing up to his brother in the end all the more impactful or maybe I’m just a naughty bobcat sandwich who likes enemies to friends to lovers. More importantly, I would like to attend a protest with Sandra Bullock!

Hottest scene in the film: when they’re eating food off of each other’s plates so casually like they’ve been doing it every day for thirty years... I’ll have what she’s having!

Spent the whole film wishing I was watching a dramatic comedy about Elizabeth Debicki’s character facing a deadline for a shoot and her struggles being the gorgeous sexiest and most beautiful director in Hollywood. Shelley Duvall and her beautiful, expressive eyes, perfect wrists, enchanting voice, looking like a walking sunflower in those yellow outfits… 💛 my love, my love, my love.

I’ve never understood why synopses describe Millie as “vain” — I’ve always interpreted Millie as a bright, lonely woman yearning for connection and a feeling of belonging. All throughout the film we watch her go out of her way to connect with people, from coworkers to fellow hotel residents, trying to engage them in conversation about this and that even when she’s met with nothing but silence. Self-confident would be a better word for her, but even there exists cracks beneath the surface; you get the impression that Millie is aware of others’ snickering and that it gnaws at her, yet she wakes up every day and chooses to be her colorful, talkative self. She tries — and really, it’s all thanks to Shelley Duvall’s performance that I leave the film with such a strong impression of her character’s deeper feelings. Another actress could have taken a conventionally “vain” approach, portraying Millie as a self-absorbed woman who babbles on and on with no self-awareness whatsoever — but Shelley gives us something much more special. Millie is very self-aware, and so much of that can be seen through those gorgeous brown eyes of hers, the way she glances around awaiting the acknowledgement she knows she’s never going to get. Her apartment is color-coordinated and personalized, it'll be the end of the world if the table isn’t set evenly for the dinner party, she writes in her diary at the end of the day and she wants to achieve the kind of perfection she reads about in women’s magazines and she hasn’t seen her mother since she was eleven. The time and care and craft that Millie puts into her presentation shows, and it drives me crazyyy watching a woman so warm and welcoming be further isolated by those around her than she already is. The patriarchy is vile. Shelley Duvall is extraordinary. So much to be said about that ending, too, but I don’t want to spoil it I just want to blow some kisses to my favorite Altman character ever. Muah!

I’m sorry, Pinky, but no one is matching Millie’s energy. Where’s the enthusiasm about banana pops? They're frozen bananas dipped in hot chocolate, and then before they get too dry, you roll 'em around real quick in Rice Krispies. What’s not to jump on the table and start singing about? I could listen to Millie talk about old boyfriends and recipes she has organized by how long they take to make (which is fucking brilliant btw) forever. My eyes would be just as wide and full of wonder. I love women!!!

P.S. Accurate depiction of the California desert. It’s beautiful and vibrant, but a sense of melancholy washes over me while driving through. I can’t describe it. It’s what being a woman in this world feels like sometimes. There are a lot of reflections in this film. Literally.

Watching this movie makes me feel sooo nostalgic for going to the movies at the time this movie was released does anyone else around my age (24,000 years old) feel this way. Everything felt so big and exciting!!! I probably saw the trailer in cinemas like thirty times “manners maketh man” whatever you say gorgeous. Was fun to the way I felt nine years ago but with 10x the Colin Firth lust. That suit maketh me crazy. I’m ing Kingsman to fall in love

Too much to get off my chest I don’t know where to begin. I was appalled by the audacity of Daniel Cleaver in the first film when he had the balls to show up to Bridget’s birthday dinner after tossing her away like yesterday’s stew and I was appalled yet again throughout the second film as he continued to try and play us for fools and sluts with his natural charisma and air of arrogance that’s unfortunately very shaggable but you didn’t hear this from me and I didn’t type this. Sure the movie’s named after Nemo, sure Nemo’s got a cuter face or whatever but Marlin’s cute too, dude. Alongside Joan Cusack as Jessie, I think Ellen’s vocal performance here is most memorable to me from any film from my childhood. Dory’s whale dialect? Still so funny, dude. I had a birthday cake with her on it as a kid, dude. Always reminds me why voice acting was one of the very first dreams I had for myself. I wish I was a sea turtle riding the East Australian Current with all my favorite dudes

While you’re out tonight celebrating “America” on the “Fourth of July” I’m as snug as a bug in a rug in my living room ing women’s stories. I’ve been kicking my feet over all the behind-the-scenes photos coming out of Andrew Ahn’s remake of The Wedding Banquet now that it’s wrapped up filming, so in an attempt to feed my excitement I haddd to check out his first comedy feature — of course I ended up having so much fun that now I’m even hungrier for the next one. Yay!!! I loved Driveways with all my heart, so it’s cool to experience Ahn’s work in my personal favorite genre (I ❤️ laughter). Big fan of him as an artist and as a human being!

Time really does work differently in queer spaces. Maybe it’s the joy, maybe it’s the relief of being surrounded by your people and knowing you can look to your left, or your right, and smile at someone who you may not know personally, yet already know better than you would the average stranger. So grateful for the safety and connections that queer spaces gift us and so grateful to the studs, the butches, the Black trans women and gay elders who fought their whole lives for the existence of said spaces. I hope every queer person gets to experience that magical, communal feeling. It’s not all perfect, the class divide and prejudice depicted in this film are very much out there but they can go fuck themselves in the most literal way possible. Sorry if that doesn’t sound super poetic or inspirational I’m just saying

Haters, it’s your unlucky day: I love this movie. I didn’t have the strongest memory of the story, I was entering high school when it released so naturally I had a lot on my mind at the time — but rewatching today at the tender age of twenty-four I really, really resonated with that ending. I wasn’t able to go down the more “conventional” path after high school, spent a lot of time wondering where I’d be if I had and I’m finally okay with not knowing. Some people read this film’s message as cynical, but I find it comforting. Opportunity is out there; there are countless possibilities, endless paths to be taken. The reality of (capitalism) this world is, we don’t all get to do what we want to do exactly how we wish to do it. So, seeing Mike and Sulley work their way up from the bottom to the top, continuing to smile even though things didn’t work out the way they imagined that they would? It meant a lot to me. I didn’t think it was possible to love the two of them even more than I already did, yet here I am. My sweet—I mean, my terrifying boys. ion is everything. ion is why sweet films like this get made, and ion is what brings us closer to where we dream of being than anything else.

I caught COVID for my very first time, so I watched Ratatouille. It’s kind of super beautiful and amazing how artists of all ions, from cooking, to filmmaking, to painting, etc., continue to push back against pre-conceived notions of what their art should look like. Who are critics, or anybody, to define who should and should not pursue their dreams? Anyone can cook. We have more influence over the nature of things than we realize by simply choosing empathy and comion. We have got to love and embrace our differences and how those differences make us, and our creations, so special, you guys. Maybe we can ALL be the greatest restaurant in Paris, and this rat, this brilliant Little Chef, can lead us there — whatever that means for you in your own lives. No one knows there’s a bat beneath my beanie helping me win a game of online Poker right now. I need a big bowl of pasta

P.S. Today is the birthday of one of my favorite butch lesbians in the world who, coincidentally, also happens to be one of the greatest cooks I know! We are so surrounded by magic and beauty and soul every single day of our lives it’s crazy. Can you IMAGINE the feeling of helping someone decide that they want to live by allowing them to spend a day in your shoes, to go about your simple, mundane life and view the world through your eyes? Like wow, you watched the sunlight dance with the trees through my gaze, spoke with the people I love and hold dear and it made you choose to live?? To experience the way I experience??? That would inspire me to live, too. That would leave my soul feeling fulfilled. That’s what we do throughout our short lifetimes, we nurture each other’s souls. We’re all new here, we’re all searching for our “spark” — and it’s all so much closer and all so much brighter than we can imagine.

This is an all-time favorite animated film for me, it’s just so perfectly Pixar. In a world plagued by hatred and violence, reminders to appreciate the small things are always needed. There are so many parts of our lives that we cannot control, capitalism breeding misery, etc. — but what we can do is choose how we live for ourselves, for each other, for all that we love and all that we stand for. We can follow our ions and encourage others to pursue theirs. We can show up for our family, friends, and communities through the hard times. We can dance to good music. We can pet therapy cats. I feel so overwhelmed with love for everything that makes us so uniquely ourselves and how that translates to how we choose to spend our time on this big, beautiful planet we call home; what makes us smile and laugh and cry. I cried big fat wet sopping fat wet tears watching this film, I felt every feeling and I like what that tells me about my sentimental soul. I feel happy and hopeful and excited and alive.

ADORE the appearance of the Jerries. Their designs reminded me of light drawings, sooo expressive and whimsical and funny and, again, perfectly Pixar! I hope to be a two-dimensional abstract humanoids in shades of translucent purple when my time on Earth is finished. But for now, I feel ready to live.

I think about Lily Gladstone’s speech as they received their honorary doctorate from the University of Montana last May a lot. Their sentiment about trusting where our inner comes point us resonated with me so strongly; “… lead with your heart. Lead with joy. Lead with comion.” I thought about their words again while watching this film, while watching Roki and Jax’s inner comes point them in the direction of the powwow and the dance they shared during that breathtakingly meaningful final scene. The Missing and Murdered Memorial Dance — what a devastatingly beautiful way to honor those lost, to surround their memory with music and culture and community. My favorite kinds of people are those who lead with their hearts. Roki is that person; Jax is that person. I loved watching them celebrate Roki’s first moon, I loved watching them look after each other while on the road and I was in tears as the events of the film unraveled, knowing what’s coming yet wanting to hold onto hope. For Jax and Roki to navigate this violent, racist world as Native women, the white family who actively participate in the very system treating the disappearance of their sister/mother like nothing — and to still lead with their hearts, to put Tawi first, and to stick together by any means necessary despite it all??? I don’t have the words. Erica Tremblay is such a gorgeous, loving filmmaker. I feel so touched by the connection between Jax and Roki, so inspired to follow my own com and to hold the women I love close. There’s a deep sadness in my heart, but there’s the urge to dance, too.

Came across an article titled, “Lily Gladstone Is Remarkable as a Butch Lesbian in ‘Fancy Dance’”, and I could NOTTT agree more! — Jax’s identity as a butch Indigenous woman could never be lost on me. I’m incredibly fortunate to be in community with butches, it’s the greatest honor of my life to love and be loved by those who’ve always served as pillars of queer community. Their sense of family and protection is like no other. I couldn’t help but appreciate it while watching Jax be an auntie, or kno:ha:ah, “small mother”, to Roki, and the lengths she goes to provide for her. Same can be said for Jax’s relationship with Sapphire and the mutual respect and affection there; I really, really loved that moment of intimacy between the two of them and definitely wasn’t (was) jealous. Definitely not (am) deeply in love with Jax. Definitely not (am) thinking about her arms. There was a blanket of security wrapped around me watching Lily work their magic through Jax — I would feel so safe with her. ❤️‍🩹

Jax knocking on Roki’s window late at night with her beloved regalia waiting for her in her backpack made me smile. She knows what it means to her. Lily Gladstone and Isabel Deroy-Olson have the most darling chemistry ever!!! There’s light in each and every closeted, repressed queer person just waiting to emerge, and I hope it has the chance to. I know it has the chance to. There is always time to become “something beautiful and powerful”. There is still time, there is still time, there is still time.

My mother is the most beautiful woman in the world and we had such a delightful evening together. We ran errands and ate chocolate and we smiled and laughed. I’ve watched this film a few times over the past month, it’s just so endlessly magical to me. What this father-daughter duo were able to achieve here, how they brought stop motion animation to new heights during their time — it’s truly remarkable to witness, from the smallest details of the Lion Queen’s chest moving up and down as she breathes to the larger, comedic gags of Renard the Fox tricking the Lion King’s royal guards. A true testament to human imagination, curiosity, and ion. Knowing this precious piece of animation history has directly inspired filmmakers of today, like Wes Anderson, makes me want to burst into tears with love. That is what art, the movies are all about: we never stop inspiring each other. To pay homage to a film that means something to you, to continue to keep its medium alive just as stop motion animators have over the decades? What a beautiful thing. I don’t have the words. I really, really hope this film gets a Criterion release of some kind one day. We need to preserve these special gems of the past and let them continue to do what they do best — inspire our minds and our hearts.

Really wish the film did more for its Black characters — there’s a horrific depiction of racial violence that I didn’t think was addressed nearly enough by the others afterwards. Friends!!! I got this documentary set up with TMDb the other night in hopes of spreading word about it here. I think I speak for us all that the people of Ireland’s unconditional solidarity with Palestine over the last eight months has been endlessly heartwarming to experience, and this event was no exception. It was one of the most invigorating showcases of love and unity we’ll ever witness during our lifetimes, and this film captures the emotions of the day so beautifully. You can feel each and every heartbeat on the field below and in the stands above. We are stronger together. 

Really special to hear some words from the Palestinian women’s team. I was so touched by captain Mira Natour’s ending interview by the sea — her first time seeing it in eleven years. Her sentiments about Ireland being the Palestine that they’re hoping for, her career as a doctor treating patients who are victims of settler violence; “…my people are dying in Gaza, and my career wants me to give people life.” I’m in iration of her resilience both as an athlete and a woman in the medical field.

The sea of Palestinian flags in the audience, the reading of Refaat Alareer’s poem, the friendly match itself, which was electrifying to watch — tears after tears after tears. It’s so good to see these women receive the comion they deserve, especially on Nakba Day, a day of immeasurable grief for Palestinians as they what they’ve lost and what continues to be stolen from them. I’ve never felt more proud to have Irish in me. Saoirse don Phalaistín. Free Palestine. ❤️🫒🍉

Ireland knows occupation and famine. The Irish and Palestinian camaraderie is a glance into the future, and I choose to believe this friendly match is what every day will be like when we achieve liberation for all oppressed peoples living under occupation; no apartheid walls or borders, only the land and its people to run across it as freely as they choose. An eternal celebration of life, culture, language, and diversity. I believe wholeheartedly in fighting for a world that’s free from the racist, imperialist systems and forces that are massacring, starving, and displacing families as we speak. When I see communities from all around the world together in of Palestinians and their struggle for life, I see light. I imagine a free Palestine, the beauty of the land and sea, the joy and spirit of the Palestinian people I feel so fortunate to have come to know though films like this one… the poetry, the food, the architecture. We will witness it all! Liberation is the future, everywhere, “from Turtle Island to Palestine, occupation is a crime.“ ; “from Palestine to Mexico, border walls have got to go,” ; “from the coast to the desert, Sudan will live forever.” Love, hope, empathy, resistance, and humanity will win. A better world is possible. We are one.

I had the joy and privilege of being raised by the most beautiful, kind, funny, generous, and brilliant woman in the world in Santa Barbara — the kind of woman who would invite you over for a meal when you’re stressed and make you feel like you can breathe again. She has a way of making the gloomiest days bright! So, naturally this movie instantly felt like home to me. I love my mom. I love my aunt, my grandma, the mom of my childhood best friend. I love every woman who’s helped me become the person that I am today, who’s made me laugh and nurtured my heart and inspired my creativity. It’s nice to know that there are filmmakers out there who feel the same way.

I will be the kind of woman who throws spontaneous makeshift dinner parties for family, friends, and anyone else I happen to meet that day. This is my promise to Annette Bening.
