Selma is a fantastic film. I liked the entire cast, and David Oyelowo is especially outstanding. He captures what Martin Luther King Jr. seemed to stand for with remarkable depth. From the speech videos I’ve seen on YouTube of the real man, Oyelowo does a terrific job embodying his spirit. Even the quieter scenes when he’s at home with his wife are just as powerful as the public speeches. The film avoids being overly sentimental or "Hollywoodized," and MLK isn’t portrayed as a godlike figure. Instead, his character is well-balanced and humanized. I loved it.

So I just watched that this after a long hiatus from DC and… yeah, not great. Catwoman and jazz should be a perfect combo which sounds cool on paper and was actually amazing in the DCAU short Chase Me, but the whole thing ended up being super slow. Characters kept doing all these extra body movements before even talking, and it just felt like they were stalling for time. I get they were going for that stylish, anime-like vibe with facial expressions mostly Dragon Ball Super, but it didn’t really work here.

The plot didn’t grab me, and the recurring characters were just kind of there none of them really stood out. They introduced Batwoman and Nosferata, which was kind of interesting since they’re not that common to the DC animated movie space. And I didn’t even know Batwoman was gay, damn.

Cassius Marcellus Clay Jr, as a fighter who became in people's opinion and certainly in his own, the greatest. At the age of 25 he calls himself Muhammad Ali and he's unemployed as a fighter. His title is gone, ripped away by various boxing commissions in the name of patriotism. He's been sentenced to five years in prison for refusing induction to the United States Army. Eight years ago he stood on a podium in Rome, an American flag blowing in the breeze, the star spangled banner being played. He was given a gold medal as an Olympic champion. People thought here's a kid with a bright future and was known as the so called 'credit to his race'. He had talent in the ring, and he had maybe more talent outside of it. He loved ballyhoo. He loved putting on the nation with a great put on that he was the greatest. He maybe the greatest poet after Robert Frost. At least he had more of his poetry published. saying Archie Moore must go in four, things like that. But then a day after he became champion, he turned off a lot of the country by revealing that he was a convert to a religious sect known popularly as Black Muslims and formerly as the Nation Of Islam and that antagonized a lot of the American people. Now his principal role is as a muslim minister. He's had a varied career, an exciting bizarre celebrated career and now perhaps a discouraging career.
And now at 32 years of age he got his title back which was taken from him unjustly.

This may not be the greatest biopic I've ever seen, but its accuracy is undeniable. Michael Mann did a tremendous job crafting an incredibly precise portrayal of Muhammad Ali. The casting was excellent, and every little detail was captured beautifully, the way he walked, talked, delivered lines, and his signature cockiness. Will Smith embodied Ali remarkably well.

From a neutral perspective, you might not find the film as engaging if you're unfamiliar with Ali's story, but to fully appreciate it, it's essential to know or read about him.

Michael Mann has a knack for making outstanding films, and this one is no exception. The movie features stunning cinematography paired with a beautiful soundtrack. Malcolm X plays a significant role in the film, much more so than Ali did in Spike Lee’s Malcolm X. I also had no idea Ali met The Beatles, now that is my new wallpaper.

Damnit, even the shooters didn't know who did it.

JFK is a fascinating and provocative film. By design, it asks questions rather than providing answers. Costner even breaks the fourth wall with the final question in his courtroom monologue, something many critics seem to miss. Oliver Stone isn't presenting definitive proof of events, he’s simply posing questions to the audience. The courtroom scene lasts for the final 41 minutes of the film, and Costner’s almost 38 minute monologue was mesmerizing, like someone telling me a story where time just flew by. The 20 minute Donald Sutherland scene was also beautifully written.

Despite its three and a half hour runtime, the film felt seamless, smooth sailing from start to finish. The overall story was brilliantly executed, and the cast was phenomenal. Also, speaking of the cast, Kevin Costner looks like a mixture of Tom Hardy and Michael Keaton. Also, the butler from the movie butler 2013 was probably also present in one of the scenes when the inner circle was planning for the coup.

Interestingly, as a result of this film, Congress ed legislation in 1992 to appoint a that would review and determine which JFK-related files should be made available to the American public.

Uoff, love it. Four interconnected lives, all revolving around drugs. A drug cartel and two cops trying to wipe it out, a judge whose daughter turns out to be a hardcore addict, and a wife whose husband is arrested for illegal drug trafficking. As usual sodenbergh had an amazing storyline with an exceptional execution.

I loved the cast, every actor were special to me somehow. Each story had its own distinct color palette while maintaining an overall raw, Soderbergh-esque aesthetic. This film stays gritty in all the right ways. Adapted from the 90s British TV series Traffik, it’s another example of why I love everything Soderbergh makes. I also feel like he has that Iñárritu factor in him a lot, iykwim. Also, doesn’t Erika Christensen look so much like Julia Stiles?

That said, watching this movie was more difficult than expected. On OTT, Benicio del Toro’s Mexican storyline didn’t have the necessary subtitles and I don't fucking understand Mexican so it was annoying. When I ed it, I struggled to find a single subtitle file that properly synced both the Spanish and English dialogues. Juno is a long awaited watch for me as it had been rotting in my watchlist for five years now. I love the cast, including Michael Cera, Ellen or Elliott Page, J.K. Simmons and co. The direction felt raw, with a brownish color palette that added to its charm, and the story had a feel-good tone. While the plot was unique something which I hadn't seen before, it was executed beautifully including the ending which was very wholesome to me. Also Ellen was so beautiful at that time :')

This is a very enjoyable film starring some of my favorite actors. I absolutely adore the cast. It’s fun, witty, and tackles a subject we can all relate to i.e. dating.

The movie captures that stage in life where everyone seems to be rushing to find 'the one', only to realize that love doesn’t always work the way we expect it to work. But the writer goes even deeper, exploring how we've all been programmed to believe in certain 'signs' that supposedly reveal whether someone is into us or not.

The interconnected stories are beautifully woven together, and the director does a fantastic job bringing them to life. Watched this with Trish on a cozy night and loved it.

I don’t have a favorite Robin Hood lore, nor did I grow up with one, but I really enjoyed this. It’s a beautiful epic, fun and adventurous. The cast was brilliant. Tom from Succession is a dumbfuck here too. I also don’t think Russell Crowe was miscast. I honestly don’t see why someone wouldn’t like it.

It almost feels like this movie picks up right where Kingdom of Heaven left off, with Richard the Lionheart’s attempt to reclaim the Holy Land during the Third Crusade, only this started after the third crusade.

Because a dog is smarter than its tail.

This movie is a really fun satire, made even better by two of the most powerful actors ever. Their scenes together just make the movie even more compelling to watch. Watched this after watching The Great Indian Kitchen a year ago, and I honestly don’t understand what half of the male population is thinking while watching this. As usual, they’ve completely misunderstood the movie, taking everything out of context in reels and other social media posts. I genuinely feel pity for those men.

Me being a guy, I could never relate to that mindset or the hatred toward something that is still so common and so obviously wrong from every possible angle. This country can only handle Jhataan and other commercial nonsense.

That being said, it’s a very solid official remake. I loved the original, but this one was also really good. They changed a few things, but overall, it worked well. And just like the original, this one made my blood boil too.

Interstellar re-releasing every year isn’t really a rare thing, but watching it for the third time, and for the first time on the big screen in 4fuckingDX with motion, breeze, smell, yada yada yada was something else. I waited so long to finally watch it with Trisha since she hadn’t seen it. Thought so many times about rewatching it before, but I’m so glad I didn’t. Glad I let her experience one of the greatest movies in cinema history on the big screen with extra frickin senses.

I loved feeling the entire thing all over again, huffing and crying three to four times, making it very evident that I couldn’t hold it in. But what was even better? Watching Trisha feel all those emotions for the first time. I loved re-experiencing it with her. I can watch this movie any number of times. I’d watch it with my kids. And if possible, with their kids too, if, by then, they haven’t stopped caring about these petty movies.

Nevertheless, the color palette was bright, adding warmth to an already beautiful film. The cast was amazing, both leads delivered effortlessly charming performances. I’ve always loved a good ’90s rom-com, but lately, I’m loving them even more. This one is truly special.

me in Master Gravedigger.

Ridley Scott’s Kingdom of Heaven (Director’s Cut) is a stunning three-hour journey filled with rich character-building, GOT-esque cinematography, beautiful music and powerful dialogues. It really is a Magnum Opus in his filmography. So many things were shown, the entire movie felt like a grand experience.

Throughout the whole movie Orlando Bloom gave me an uncanny resemblance to a grown-up A.J. Soprano. Edward Norton as the Leper King oozed charisma every time he walked on the screen. The detailing was incredible, like I saw Eva Green brushing her hair with an obsidian glass which is true to the era. Even Jamie Lannister made a cameo.

This is a fictional storyline of the crusades set between the 2nd crusade and leading to the 3rd one. I don’t care how historically accurate it is, as long as it’s beautiful, and this absolutely was. A grand, epic film that deserves to be seen in its full glory.

Bleak, hopeless, and utterly devastating, The Road is not your typical survival thriller because, in truth, there is no survival plan. Based on Cormac McCarthy’s novel, this film paints a picture of a post-apocalyptic world where hope is as rare as food. Every moment is soaked in despair, every step forward feels like an act of futility, and yet, the bond between a father and his son keeps the journey from collapsing into complete nihilism.

Viggo Mortensen delivers a haunting performance, his physical transformation shocking as he embodies a man on the brink of starvation and exhaustion. His gaunt frame and weary eyes make it clear that this world has already ended, and he is simply dragging himself through its ruins. Robert Duvall's brief but powerful cameo as an old wanderer adds another layer of heartbreak.

The cinematography captures the barren landscapes with a chilling realism, gray skies, dead trees, and a silence that weighs heavy. There are no grand battles, no comforting resolution, just an unrelenting march toward an uncertain fate. The film doesn’t offer hope, but it forces you to feel every ounce of desperation and love that drives a parent to keep going.

The Road is a film that lingers long after the credits roll, a reminder of how thin the line is between survival and surrender.

As much as people have misinterpreted the final scene where Meryl Streep says, "I have doubts,” I strongly feel it was about what she did to Philip Seymour Hoffman.

Either way, both deliver stunning performances, commanding every loud and quiet moment with sheer power. What’s incredible is how they cultivate sympathy for characters who, in lesser hands, would be easily dismissed as repulsive. Watching them at the height of their prowess is just breathtaking. Goddamn, I miss PSH. And let’s not forget Viola Davis who literally blows the roof off in just one scene. That kind of impact is why I consider her one of the most powerful actresses I've ever seen on a screen.

Selecting one movie from each of my favorite directors and then ranking them w1m57 cause something is definitely wrong with me. https://letterboxd.sitesdebloques.org/godthedodo/list/selecting-one-movie-from-each-of-my-favorite/ letterboxd-list-46639253 Sun, 16 Jun 2024 07:41:08 +1200 <![CDATA[

Please change the view of the list to Grid View for a detailed reasoning why I chose these movies.

After thoroughly watching either all or more than half of these directors' filmographies, I'm boldly committing what some may call blasphemy by crafting a ranked list from their best movies, picking just one from each director that I consider to be their Magnum Opus, rather than my personal favorite. My favorites may differ, but these are the films I deem their best work.

  1. Boyhood

    Richard Linklater

Before trilogy ? dazed and confused, waking life, school of rock. No, Boyhood is easily his Magnum Opus and I still thank my girlfriend for showing it.

  2. Once Upon a Time in America

    Sergio Leone

Good bad ugly ? No, this is the cream. The epic-most movie, may be ever made in the history of cinema. Maybe one of the directors of whom I've watched the least number of movies, but this movie speaks for itself.

  3. Magnolia

    PTA

Ouff, there will be blood, boogie nights, phantom thread, the master, hard right, punch drunk love, you keeping a count ? In my review I wrote how much I hated the sacred frog rain at the end, but the rest of the movie is so great that it can be included directly in any list of movies. Magnolia is the cream of movies based on interconnected lives.

  4. The Departed

    Sir Martin Fucking Scorsese

Hands down the single most difficult film to choose from a plethora of brilliant movies by the best director living on the planet of earth. King of comedy, taxi driver, raging bull, shutter island, TWOWS, goodfellas, casino, silence, gangs of new york, mean street, the aviator, cape fear yada yada yada. I think king of comedy and taxi driver are my favourites but the sheer brilliance of the departed weirdly takes the cake for me

  5. Interstellar

    Christopher Nolan

Inception, the dark knight rises, oppenheimer, dunkirk, memento, the prestige are all notable, but in the battle between the dark knight and interstellar, I believe this stands out to be an unmatched film spectacle.

  6. The Godfather Part II

    Francis Ford Coppola

Probably the least amount of movies watched of a director in this list. But the list would be a bit empty if not for Coppola. Apocalypse Now, Godfather 1&3, rainmaker, outsiders and the conversation? No, nothing comes close to Godfather part 2.

  7. 21 Grams

    Iñárritu

One of my most favourite directors. Babel, amores perros, biutiful, Birdman, revenant. I am yet to watch eleven minutes nine seconds one image but I don't think anything can take the charm of 21 grams.

  8. Gangs of Wasseypur – Part 2

    Anurag Kashyap

The only other Indian director in the list, maybe the best 21st century Indian director. It's nearly impossible to choose from GOW 1&2 so gave the 2nd part. Ugly, dev d, black friday, no smoking, ak vs ak a lot to choose from but GOW is anurag's Magnum Opus.

  9. Se7en

    David Fincher

People may threaten me for ditching fight club but may forgive me to see Se7en instead of anything else. Gone girl, game, the social network comes close. Maybe i should've replace this with the curious case of Benjamin button as it's my favourite but then it would be hypocritical to bias myself over favourites now after all the other threads.

  10. Dogville

    Lars Von Trier

Probably the most controversial director in this list. I have not watched the golden heart trilogy of breaking the waves, dancer in the dark and the idiots but I still know what to expect. I've watched the depression trilogy of melancholia, antichrist and nymphomaniac 1&2. Also, house that jack built and manderlay to choose from. But nothing is as dark as Dogville from the ones I have watched.

These two movies are literally happening either on the same timeline or somewhat before or after each other. There are so many similarities like that court scene, where the judge questions Edgar Hoover about his qualifications and the number of arrests he has personally made, or the scene in the movie theater, where at the starting of every movie at that time Hoover urges the audience to look to their left and right to spot public enemies among the people.

This list is mainly based on his performances, not the whole movie because I feel that would be more of a director's list than Pacino's.
