Look. There’s nothing inherently wrong with this movie on its surface, and if you don’t think about it too much then it’s just a fun, cute movie that a lot of people will probably enjoy.
However, I am sick and tired of pretending that live action remakes are not, at its core, anti art and probably the laziest form of film that can be made.
The way I see it, there are two outcomes from a live action remake. You either make a 1 by 1 carbon copy of the animated version which is completely pointless, or you change key details of the original film and defeat the purpose of recreating the movie. It is a lose-lose situation and it drives me crazy that studios put so much time and effort into these remakes rather than putting that money and effort into an original idea.
I know that this means nothing in the grand scheme of things and these remakes are going to keep getting churned out but people love to complain that there aren’t any original movies out and then continue to these ventures regardless.
Endlessly frustrating

]]>I’m sitting here trying to think of a reason to not give this 5 stars and I genuinely can’t.
A 3 hour long journey that takes us through the minds of literally a dozen characters and their experience with family, loss, and love. The father-son relationships developing between Jake/Lo’ak and spider/Quaritch. The BEST VISUALS of all time. The continuing war between the colonizing power and the natives. The continued presence of nature, being the driving force of the entire film.
I was sitting and just watching the main credits and I just felt something that you only feel during very specific movies. The ethereal voices and pure appreciation for nature really drove this home towards the end for me.
This is epic storytelling at its finest and I’m tired of pretending like it isn’t. James Cameron is a goat and I am beyond excited for Fire and Ash.

]]>I got a random urge to rewatch this for the first time in years and it has aged wonderfully.
Mulan is the ultimate criticism of toxic masculinity while being simultaneously uplifting for young boys and girls alike.
I genuinely think if many of the young men in this world who fall into the incel/andrew Tate podcast listening category would just watch this film and try to understand what is happening then they would be so much better off for it.
It’s so funny because the dudes that listen to “I’ll make a man out of you” and immediately think of being big and strong and manly don’t realize that the entire scene that the song is playing over is showing how “being a man” isn’t helping them accomplish their task. The song says “be a man” over and over again, while Mulan retrieves the arrow by doing the opposite of what the song is telling them to do. She uses her brain.
Her whole motivation behind ing the army in the first place is completely unselfish and probably much more honorable than any of the other men, yet once they find out she’s a woman they immediately forget anything she’s done and toss her to the curb despite the fact that she saved all of their lives. Plus they don’t even give her the opportunity to show them why she was there in the first place.
Everyone needs to watch this film.

]]>Upon rewatch I think it’s pretty safe to say that Marvel is heading in the right direction again.
This really takes a swing at tackling some difficult themes and I really appreciate that. Most recent marvel films have been lacking that, they don’t really feel like films, just a continuation of a multiple decade long story with no real substance to it. The themes of trauma and mental illness, while on the nose at times, were thought out and put on display pretty well.
This ensemble cast did a really wonderful job, especially Florence Pugh and Lewis Pullman. I really love what they are doing.
I can’t wait for Fantastic Four!

]]>Yeah this is a perfect film.
Completely visceral but undeniably beautiful scenery with one of the best soundtracks I’ve ever heard and some of the greatest performances I’ve seen from an ensemble cast.

]]>The woman that lived in the house screaming "Why? Why?" at the end of the film really explains how I felt about this movie. We see these soldiers march in to this house, put the families in one room, with nothing but absolute chaos and destruction to follow.
I've seen some people try and equate this to just another American propaganda war film, but I think that couldn't be further from the truth. We know literally nothing about any of these characters, we don't really know the nature of their mission, neither do they, and we sure as hell don't get attached to any of them before they get absolutely shit on the entire film. This pretty much sums up what these soldiers are to our government. Nothing but guns to send on missions, who can die at any point and immediately be replaced.
This film is absolutely suffocating, with a sound design that made me wince, and with scenery that is just horrid to look at.
I can't say that I will be rewatching this any time soon, but I will be thinking about this for a good while.
I may have been slightly hyperbolic in my initial review🥴

I have yet to see this man make a film that wasn’t outstanding. Every performance is hilarious and perfect for their role, the film is delightful to look at and overall just a great time.
