I wish I had more to say about this movie because technically it is very good and it is very well shot. I just found that it had some pacing issues for me personally and more than that, I found its theme a little less exciting. I understand this went on to actually lead some pretty big social changes and I can't really knock it, I just also don't think it's the most fun movie to watch. Still worth checking out though, just for the theme and the general acting and directing.

While there's not particularly a lot going on here that's wholly original, I find Companion a very fun and spunky movie to really start off the year strongly. It's fun, a little goofy, and has plenty of moments that really stand out during its runtime. Basically taking the idea of like a Black Mirror episode and expanding on it, making a pretty good end product in the result. Girls should be allowed to kill men, it's awesome! That's basically the moral of the story.

This is quite possibly one of the most interesting and impactful documentaries I have ever seen, and it's fascinating because it isn't really a documentary at all, but instead a singularly focused film about the life of a person that's so interesting it entirely consumes the runtime. Benjamin is a fascinating character, a kind of confused mix of a person that is so grounded in reality and so tragic, yet at the same time you can't help but relate to. He's a truly free individual, somebody who doesn't even seem to be the best person in general, yet manages to be likeable, manages to live his truth as he saw it. I think there's something beautiful in that.

I think this film really gives an important look into somebody who always lived on the edge, somebody who would go on to be forgotten by history and never really even broke out in fame, yet made a mark on his community all the same. Benjamin Smoke is not an icon, he's an addict, somebody who knows his life is messy and complicated, I love that. The kind of perpetual bar band with no real recorded history that still exists to this day, though before an age of recording platforms and online spaces. It's also a fascinating and very valuable look into queerness for the time. Messy and often ugly in a way, yet beautiful all the same. A lot of the verbiage is lacking but the thought is still there, the anger and hurt brought by people not understanding and accepting him. The way his music was used to document his feelings, to find his voice.

Genuinely one of the most impressive and well put together bits of creepypasta-like horror I've seen come from a game in a very long while. It's not like things are exactly outright scary, there's no jumpscare or horror enemy that jumps out at you or anything like that which plague so many of these modern tales. Instead this is a slow, mellow burn, a sense of discomfort that grows throughout the whole experience. As if the game itself is dying and decaying, begging the player to let it go and leave it behind by using scraped features and eventually decaying the world state to a point where nothing on it can survive. Honestly this is a piece to study for anyone looking to do something similar.

Probably one of the better documentaries I've watched overall, I truly underestimated Michael Moore from back in the day to be completely honest. As a host he lacks a lot of charisma, but I think he has an incredibly keen eye for capturing moments, conversations, and people at their most natural. There's some incredible shots here that are spliced together back to back, it's a film that causes whiplash by showing you the decay of the American dream and a town that begins to eat away at itself due to poverty. Then in the next second you'll see an entire group of middle and upper class people attending a jailhouse rock themed slumber party in an old jail with glee directly after. It speaks volumes about America that pretty much everything in this is still happening today, nothing has changed. The lack of any ability or direct word from the people who caused all the pain and suffering at the center of it all is one of the most damning aspects.

Anyway yeah pretty good documentary.

Honestly THE Vietnam film. One of the most brutal and honest films about the depths of the war and the people it let thrive. The casual violence and rape and madness of it all is on full display next to the rapid fire nature of talking to somebody one minute and having their head explode 2 feet away from you the next. This movie is like a blueprint for how war movies should be, the bad expressed with such normalcy that it really showcases the disgusting nature of the united states military.

I genuinely found this shit quite charming, it's got an idea and it does some fun stuff with it, just wish it had more practical effects instead of the kinda shitty CG and blood effects done in post. Where's all the squibs man! There's a scene near the end with a grenade launcher that looks like a stock effect you'd put in a YouTube video and I stood up and lost my shit when I saw it. Overall pretty good, I'm genuinely surprised nobody actually died during filming this and they should make a sequel just to make sure that happens the next go around.

I love the depiction of mind melting battles people have between each other in this, it's a depiction of ESP where it's almost like more or a burden than anything. Technically a romance film, but it's also one of the most heart breaking unromantic and harrowing tales I've ever seen. It uses it's structure to go beyond telling a normal romance story, instead showcasing and describing the irresistible attraction and draw of American life. A tiny town that swallows up and hollows out everyone within it and around it, yet somehow our main character finds himself unable to leave it, unable to move on and be happy. There is no happiness left to extract from the American dream, only a hollow listless longing for something more, something better. Except for some people that shoe never drops, their left empty and abandoned in a dying town, rotting away. Alone yet surrounded.

The depiction of rural America in this film is among the best ever put to screen. At times it's immoral, often deranged, and almost incomprehensible to anyone who didn't grow up in a town like this. Kids have sex with sex workers and all watch in a crowd, there's multiple awkward sex scenes between teenagers, sometimes with adults that take advantage of them. It's the end result of a generation of kids without guidance or proper sex ed, the end result of a society that creates life without a second thought or consideration for what happens afterwards or how to raise it. This is America at its core. Nothing much has really changed, maybe nothing ever will.

The workprint made this much more enjoyable than if I had just seen the finished version, getting gambling ads and having a constant add for a gambling site in every frame of this film makes the filth of corporate slop go down easier, at least it feels honest.

While not the worst movie I've ever seen, it's also just painfully okay and could have been better if anyone on the project was allowed to have a vision. I think the credits in the workprint rolling with WRITTEN BY: TBD really says it all. Films like this are written by nobody, more a product than an actual piece of art. No amount of "just turn your brain off" is enough to overcome the fact that this movie feels largely soulless and that Jack Black destroyed his longest running friendship for it, prostrating himself on the screen for a film that feels vapid, embarrassing, and overall culturally unimportant.

There's nothing about this movie this is particularly offensive. In fact it feels so inoffensive that it just lands at a point where I felt nothing. Our cities will one day crumble, our world turned to ash. Nobody will this film beyond the funny voicelines and the memes online. Do something with your life instead, make something for yourself.

I don't think there could ever truly be another band like the Beatles. Not even just because that era of music is long dead and gone, but because there truly will only ever be a band that approaches the scale and cultural impact these men had across the world. There's been many bands, singers, groups that have been large, but I don't think any of them aside from maybe Michael Jackson has achieved the level of fame and eternal relevance that this band had on the culture at large. They influenced music, they changed the industry. In an era of boy bands they carved out a unique sound and character that has stood the test of time through the ages. Not just because of their music either, I mean Hard Day's Night is more of a slapstick comedy than it is a musical, much like a lot of their other work. Between cartoons, interviews, appearances in film and television, these 4 have shown themselves to be some of the most talented performers to walk the earth.

A Hard Day's Night is like genuinely one of the most fun and perfect movies I could imagine a group like this making. A natural high of their career as performers, a mix of their wit and genuinely well filmed and written bits mixed with the incredible musical stylings they're known for. I honestly can't believe how good they manage to pull off like every scene, a lesser group would crumble the moment a camera was in their face but these fuckers play this shit like the 4 stooges at all times and manage to keep it straight. A genuine one of a kind movie, once in an era. Nobody will ever do it like them again. Peace and love.

Incredibly snappy crime romance that's also a sweet and at times doomed romance. There's something to be said for movies like this and how they've fallen from popularity with time. Not just in of the genre but also the way these films used to truly be showcases of their actors at the very core of them. Charisma and witty banter between two people you genuinely feel have a connection can do wonders to make a film work.

Sure there's some issues with the framing, you could argue that by modern standards a parole officer falling in love with his parolee is an abuse of trust and power yadda yadda but ya know what? Sometimes love and romance is complicated. Sometimes it's not as simple and moral as people like to think. I think even in the modern world a movie like Shockproof has its value. A romance with a cruel twist of irony and just a little bit of sexism at its core about two people falling in and out of love, ruining themselves in the process.

The end of violence is a film about the changing tides of American politics and the world in the late 90s. A feeling of the tides changing right before the events of 9/11 happened and actually thrust American culture into the darkest blackest hole imaginable for the next 24 years. At the same time it's also about the changing tides of Hollywood, an industry obsessed with murder and violence that itself was a reflection of an uneasy culture of tension and paranoia. A culture which when given the chance it's easier to escape from before you get dragged down and smothered by it, suffocated by the very same systems that should exist to protect us.

There's a beautiful film here, probably one of the best I've seen in a very long time. There's something about the cynical core of it all that just works. The paranoia and intrigue which grips you throughout it as you wonder what's going to happen next, with every moment you think something will go one way it ends up going another. Much life life it's unpredictable, a mystery. And in that mystery it's remarkably easy to impress upon it importance and fear, you expect a certain outcome and as a result that becomes reality. Or at least it can become reality, unless you manage to escape the flow of things, to shed those fears and worries that can twist men into monsters and eat up the lives of innocent people in the process.

Basically Wim Wenders you've done it again you beautiful bastard!

It really feels like both a celebration of the artform while at the same time being a very tongue and cheek acknowledgement of how WB has completely disregarded this IP in the last few years. I do think it runs a bit long and overall I don't think it quite hits or fits together as well as it should, but man it's so nice to see animation back on the big screen that looks this good. There's also quite a lot of gags and bits that do land for me really well. Unfortunately there's also quite a few that feel particularly egregious. Mickey 17 is one part the three stooges and one part a super incredibly thoughtful film about colonization, civilization, and how society uses the underclass to build a perfect world for itself at the expense of those at the bottom without a second thought. This genuinely is one of the most scathing and obviously vitriolic films Bong Joon Ho has ever made and it's incredible. Every part of it just feels so over the top and comedic while at the same time having this much deeper core and message about excess and social status. A modern day version of Starship Troopers mix of comedy and social commentary on xenophobia and "humanity first" political views.

Robert is fantastic in this and his funny little voice is inspiring. Mark Ruffalo also plays my favorite role of his yet by playing this deranged evangelical political character entirely obsessed with image and vein bullshit while people around him suffer and live under harsh rule. It's a bit akin to Snowpiercer except if the man at the end of the train was a fucking child that's more or less entirely controlled by his equally deranged wife.

Anyway I liked this, also happy that it will lose WB millions. Fuck the studio and I hope Bong Joon Ho makes his money and does whatever he wants with it.

I genuinely didn't know what to expect going into this film except that I saw it was pretty universally panned and looked down on, both by audiences and the director who has more or less wiped this thing from the history books. However, there's a lot of charm in Trio, I think it actually does a lot more here than it gets credit, even if there was some studio interference in the making of it. Supposedly this movie was supposed to be even more dark and brutal, which is wild because it's already pretty much as rough as you could get. Not quite like the later Vengeance Trilogy but damn near close in tone at points.

In of what Trio is it's kind of a deranged cross between somebody trying to emulate a Tarantino film and a mix of almost cartoonish surrealism in a depiction of crime on par with like GTA or the Yakuza games. It feels at times like it is a very bipolar film which switches between genuinely gripping conversations to comedy routines to just the most insane shit happening on screen, all handled with a level of talent that for a second film in a director's library is very impressive. In fact, I can find very little wrong with this thing. I mean sure there's some technical issues here or there and the dialogue in places can feel stilted or not that snappy, but it works remarkably well because of it due to its three leads being able to really sell that shit. It's sort of like watching 3 chucklefucks commit a series of crimes very poorly where things sometimes just devolve into slapstick. I fuck with it a lot.

I think there's a lot here worth talking about, I think a lot of people in reviews are WAAAAAY too harsh on this film. As somebody who went in with no expectations and a love for this man's work I am happy to report I walked away pretty happy. There's a lot of his later work and talent in this film, it feels the most similar to something like Lady Vengeance which does feel like probably his best overall attempt at something like this, but I still think this movie is worth watching. If nothing else because it was a lot of genuine fun.

I genuinely didn't really care for this movie, i have no idea how this is even in talks for this year as one of the best things. Yeah there's parts that are interesting but for most of the movie I just felt kind of bored. The gang just kind of fucking around and it devolving into a comedy would be fun if every scene didn't feel like it lasted too long. Instead it feels like every moment goes on for 2 or 3 moments longer than it should, it also seems unsure about whatever it is it's trying to accomplish. Overall, it's fine I guess. Personally I think Tangerine does a lot more with a kind of similar concept, so maybe watch that instead. Not much remarkable going on here.

This film is one of the most technically impressive and genuinely wowing things I've ever seen, I have no idea what kind of shit people are smoking to dislike this. It's such an insane showcase of excess, a tour de of cinema and Francis Ford Coppola's career. I can see why it took so long to make this movie, this is the kind of shit that you have to self finance and shut out literally any and all outside people on. There's a vision at play here that's genuinely Lynchian in the actual way, dreamlike sequences, experimental editing, bizarre changes in the way people address each other throughout the film. Just remarkable, also one of the most fun and campy movies I have ever seen. I am perplexed that this way not more of a hit but I also understand that it's so unconventional that normal audiences might simple just not fuck with it. It's the kind of freak shit only a cinema pervert could make.

In of the actual things going on is this movie I think it leaves itself fairly wide open to interpretation, though personally I view it as a lens with which Coppola uses to examine the film industry and the slow decay of autors like himself which have been to some degree left in the past for a new generation. It's about pushing the boundaries in an industry or a world that constantly doubts and tells you that you're wrong, that your vision couldn't possibly be right. It's a spectacle of excess and wonder, of an idealized world of performance put on stage for the public to eat up or get driven into a frenzy by. This is cinema at its finest baby.

One of the best directed and paced dramas I've seen, just an incredibly gripping political drama about the cryptic, goofy, and bullshit binds of tradition which decides the entire direction of a major political faction which drives basically all christian faith throughout the world. Neat!

Ralph Fiennes is such a cute man and I love him being truly one of the only men of good faith and honor in this entire thing, everyone else is so wrapped up in their own bullshit they can't even see the reality of the world around them. At its core this movie is about men and their ambition, and how particularly of the church use god to push their own agenda and politics worldwide. The entire process of choosing a new pope is given such booming importance while everyone involved is running around playing political games like it's a school ground.

The direction of this is great, I mean, just the use of color alone is fantastic, the reds and white really pop in such a good way. I think the films use of its environment and closed off space do a lot to really bring you into the restrictive and repressive environment. The use of light and color, the use of old outdated processes and the way these repetitive actions are shown again and again. It really all works to draw you into the environment and the setting, at times often feeling alien and goofy. Loved it!

Longlegs is a fantastic film that feels like it does it for me in a lot of respects but in this year in particular I think it really never found its footing. I really like this film, it's exceptionally tuned to my tastes. A bit of otherworldly horror creeping into reality, a mix of something cosmic into a police procedural. I really like a lot of the focus, a lot of the shot composition, and I really like its constant back and forth between different formats going between 16:9 and 4:3. It does a lot of shit I like, a lot of shit I aim to also do myself within my own work on projects like Demenza's Gate, so I really like it there. However there's just something missing, a spark, a moment that really hooked me in and kept my attention. It's not even that it needed more violence or jumpscares, in fact I almost think there's too much. The main thing that stands out to me is that the main character just leaves no impression, I really wish she got a chance to shine more because I feel like everyone else really did. Nicolas Cage is of course fantastic, the main lead's mom is also great, I really just wish they had done a bit more with her is all. Otherwise though amazing presentation and style, really dug it.

Easily one of the best movies of the year and quite possibly one of the best character pieces ever put to screen. This movie oozes a perverted style and originality that really feels like a once in a life time event. Fitting for a film about a sport where people often burn themselves to the core incredibly brightly and incredibly quickly.

Calling this movie a love triangle doesn't do it justice, this is like the most toxic combination of emotions perfectly distilled into a 2 hour runtime which uses Tennis as a canvas to tell us something more, something deeper to the human condition. Our desire for validation and fame, our pursuit of being "the best", how the commodification and rapidly changing world of sports destroys young men in order to remake them into better athletes.

I love this movie, easily one of the best of the year. The soundtrack and the direction are phenomenal here, though what makes it land more than anything is the toxic charisma of the trio here. You just can't help but be sucked into the black hole while you watch, at all moments you're never sure who to route for as the perspective bounces back and forth, like a Tennis match, all framed with and around just that. What a phenomenal effort. This not getting a single nomination this year is a crime.

One of the best movies of the year, a weird parallel that just happened to come out the very same year as The Substance. Together these two films struggle with identity in a very amazing way, though I think personally there's something about this that speaks to me more. It's a tragedy on display, a man changing himself to be happy only to realize that he was happier before he conformed to society and that his place in the world could have just as easily been a much happier life had he just changed his perspective. As a fan of tragedies I find this one particularly enrapturing, the back and forth of Edward and Ozwald and the slow decent as their lives essentially swap places is so expertly done, Ozwald played here by Alan Pearson is fantastic, his charisma and charm feel so genuine and come through so well in this, but it only works because of the performances of all parties involved.

Wild at Heart has always been something of a fascinating blip on the radar in David Lynch's career. On paper it's probably one of his films that has the most Twin Peaks influence in it, in part due to the cast which is full of returning characters and the music which often veers into that jazzy 50s haze. Yet, it's still undeniably its own thing. I think Lynch like nobody else really has a vision with a camera and this movie is a really good introduction to that vision. It's over the top, everyone acts deranged and like a cartoon, it's like watching a cartoon movie except every so often reality creeps in for just a moment through car crashes or horrific gore one moment and then slap stick comedy the next. In a way I think this is one of the funniest movies he ever directed, it's fully aware of itself and how over the top it is, that's what makes it work. I love this movie, amazing place for people to start on his filmography. The 2 hour build up to Nicolas Cage calling a bunch of guys a slur is worth the wait I promise.

Clint Eastwood's movies are always weird because on one hand the man is like a right wing nut and kind of a general asshole but on the other I find his world view and filmography interesting. He's got the mindset of an old world republican, like the kind of guy who genuinely believes in the American dream and that the foundations of our country are just and perfect, with him being fairly well known for being a piece of shit particularly to native americans in the past. Yet, in his work I see someone who knows these things about himself, that acknowledges these things as flaws. Gran Torino is probably the work of his that shows this the most in particular, but Unforgiven and Cry Macho have it a bit too. There's an acknowledgement that he's part of the old world, that the old America doesn't exist anymore and that a generation of men were sculpted into hateful bigots that can't even see their own flaws and long for some justified frontier to go and be a hero in. I think that's valuable, regardless of how I feel about the guy and how much of that is even intentional.

As for Juror #2, it's easily one of his better films but not quite the best. I liked it, it does what it can with its setup and actually does a bit to make it stand out, but it's also clear this is a movie written and directed by somebody who watches 12 Angry Men every once in awhile and wants to try his hand at it. In a way I can't blame him, 12 Angry Men is one of the best movies ever put to screen. This doesn't get close to that, but it is a pretty tense look at the justice system through the eyes of a Juror, it's in conversation with itself about morality, about how people are so absorbed by their own life they are perfectly willing to sacrifice others to maintain it. There's an inherent flaw in our system of justice and I think this almost gets there in of showcasing it. What makes up for it though is the main struggle that the Juror we follow throughout it.

A fantastic and tense thriller that manages to really capture to grime and nasty under belly of Hollywood and the way society so willingly and regularly disregards the fears of women in trouble. It does a phenomenal job of showcasing the blatant selfishness of men and just how terrifying being alone with a stranger who can overpower you really is. It took 2 movies and a show but finally they have made a good sonic movie. Granted, I'm a bit biased because Shadow, but this one actually feels like a sonic movie in more than just having Sonic on screen cracking jokes left and right. Sure, the writing still has its problems of being largely written in a writer's room far far too over concerned about having a joke every minute, but despite that all this is a decent enough run at it. It helps that this movie is the first one really taking things from the games, particularly with Sonic Adventure 2, and boy is it clear how much of an upgrade that is from the movie original bullshit both before it and surrounding it. It also does a good job of finally sidelining the human plots for characters people actually want to see, with the majority of time now spent with Sonic or Shadow being spent on Eggman who is, still over the top as fuck, but at least pretty fun.

Aside from that there's not much else to say. I pogged when Shadow got a bike and a gun for a second and also when Live and Learn played, but also like, they probably could have used a few more music drops. If you're going to do the city escape helicopter drop just fucking commit and do the song, same with I Am, it should have been a needle drop. Genuinely the most hype moment of the film is a needle drop of SA2 music, I cannot believe it took them this long to actually put music from the game into these movies. How embarrassing.

Okay so I had like a vague idea of what this was going in and I knew it was going to be a body horror film largely based around body dysphoria, but jesus christ it did not disappoint. Right at the top, I don't like needles, there's a lot of them in this! A lot of close ups of them. Genuinely I don't get super squeamish otherwise but those got to me. On top of that there's just a ton of other amazing shots featuring and showcasing off body horror as a way to showcase the main characters growing dysphoria and self hatred. Loved it, it's a very good story of like a continuous decent down, it's like watching someone continue to dig their own grave at every step of the way and it just gets worse, eventually resulting in probably my favorite last 30 minutes of any movie this year.

Now, onto the technical. This is one of the most well shot, edited, color graded, and just all around feeling movies of the year. In of technical skill there's so many incredible shots in frequently phenomenal sets and locations. The camera work is genuinely impressive, the fact that most if not all the film is seen through distorted angles, close up shots, I've never seen like a more disgusting depiction of just like eating then some of the closeups in the first 10 minutes. It's got the sauce, it's got the practical and special effects that meld together and really are just perfect. It has a vision and it goes for it even if it can sometimes be goofy. I adore the editing, the insane low opacity face shots, the the crazed whipping around of the camera, just everything. On a very technical level this thing rules, and like I said, as someone who loves this shit the last 30 minutes was a complete joy for me.

I put this on because I saw it on a few lists for Japanese Christmas films. At first, I was a bit worried as it was slow and a little mundane, with no Christmas in sight. Then, Rex was born, my god, what a beautiful little guy. The special effects for Rex is adorable, there's an adorable animation, a clearly visible puppet version where half his body is attached to the ground, and then there's multiple different sizes, all of which have their own outfit. Rex is adorable, he's a highlight of this movie. It's like ET if instead of being an ugly poop alien it was a fucking dinosaur that wore Christmas outfits. Oh yeah, and that lack of Christmas I mentioned, this movie goes from no Christmas to like the most Christmas ever as the second half of it devolves into ET and Home Alone bullshit with pretty snow and great sets.

Please watch Rex, find it on Archive.org, enjoy, you are not prepared to love a dinosaur as much as I love Rex now. I will protect him with my life.

I hate how they do cameos, I hate the lack of respect and love for the originals, I hate how everything is written and exists purely for a punchline, I just hate it! This series is basically everything wrong with corporate mandated TV. In another reality this would be some direct to video 2/3rds sequel movie that would probably be pretty alright, instead its dragged out into a 6 episode mini series to promote a shitty streaming service.

It's genuinely not even that it's bad. There's some fine writing, the jokes are still probably the worst part but sometimes they land. But that's also the problem, it's fine. 2 movies ago that would have been impressive, but you need to DO something. Particularly I adore the POV shots and the ones racing phone lines, though there's honestly an incredible amount of camera work in this movie. It's the example in my opinion for a horror movie showing you just enough without overplaying its hand, a perfect and chilling mystery that doesn't feel a need to overstay its welcome or over explain itself.
