Dune: Part Two

2024

★★★★½

I didn't think Denis Villeneuve could do it but he did. The man outdid himself. 'Dune: Part Two' is bolder, bigger and funnier than its predecessor. It's more intimate but the stakes have never been stronger.

Greig Fraser is on God mode (his best work to date?). The cinematography is absolutely insane, such a step up from the first one in my opinion. The shots of Jessica during Paul's dream had my jaw on the floor, one of the best visuals ever put the screen. I loved the diversity of the color palette (regular color, black & white, infrared…), especially with the visual storytelling where each environment has its own color code.

Hans Zimmer’s music is masterful even though some of the music is the same/similar to the first one. The new ones match perfectly the vibe and add so much emotion & depth to the scenes… straight goosebumps.

Timothée Chalamet & Zendaya are AMAZING in this film. They both get more screentime and they showcase perfectly their inner conflict affecting their relation. This sequel is more emotional which makes it more appealing to me. Timothée's acting is astonishing. His character is completely torned, facing his darker thoughts. What makes it good is that it doesn't care how much he can resist them, it's something inevitable, that will happen. And when it does… it's the BEST. Chalamet embrace fully his role and I had goosebumps the whole time. The charisma, presence, gaze… it's like he snapped and changed into a whole new person.

It's easily Zendaya's best role yet. Her portrayal of Chani is beautifully nuanced and subtle, just like the love she feels for him, hidden from the Fremens. I also loved how she truly seemed nervous and worried for Paul during his first sandworm ride, and the the smile & relief on her face when she sees him succeed… that's cinema.

Javier Bardem's performance really strucked me. The faith he conveyed was fascinating, scary at times as it gets over the top but that's what makes it perfect because in the end, he might be right which is even more fascinating… He also added some light-hearted moments where the whole audience was laughing ahah. The rest of the cast is great but these 3 actors were truly brilliant, by far my favorite performances in the film.

For some, the beginning of the film could feel long because it takes quite some time before the major events happen. It didn't bother me, I liked seeing the Fremen's culture being explored, the sand, the sun, the music, the whole vibe… it's something else. And that climax… I don't know what to say besides the last 45 minutes might be the hardest ones ever put to screen. Everything is just perfect and goes hard as fuck. The fight between Paul and Feyd-Rautha reminded me so much the final fight of 'Spider-Man'. It was so raw, bloody, no music, just the sound of the hits and breaths.

Denis Villeneuve’s vision for greatness and epic is unmatched. He delivered a second opus that elevates the DUNE saga to the rank of the greatest modern sci-fi blockbusters. I've never wanted a film so bad than 'Dune: Messiah', it could be one of the greatest films ever making Dune one of the best trilogies of all time.

(I just noticed that I saw both 'Dune' & 'Dune: Part Two' at the Grand Rex with the cast attending. We do say good things always come in threes so if Dune 3 gets made, I hope I will see it there too!)
