I generally prefer O'Malley's video/sketch/art to his live performance, but to see him perform live is a rare treat – he is full of seemingly endless wells of stamina & bizarre pathos. you always like these characters of his, as grotesque as they are. that the nature of the special manages to mirror his more high-concept videos is no small feat, and that type of comedic endurance is something to behold. the focus on O'Malley's face feels sort of like the good version of whatever Tom Hooper was trying to do with Les Mis, where with a performer this smart and adept (and funny) you want to see the gears turning in real time, the mix of the improvisational and the seemingly improvisational, and how the tenor of the character pulls at his energy. feels lightyears ahead in special style and tone than any other comedy I've turned on and turned off in the past few years. congrats to Conner, HM, & all <3
