The Calling of a Bus Driver

2020

★★★

It’s a Patrick Kong film, so you know what to expect, which is infidelity and twists upon twists.  Aside from his regular shtick, there’s the premise of an interesting film buried in here about finding a new ion when life throws a curve at you.  In some ways reminiscent of LOST IN TIME <忘不了> (2003), the bus sequences here prove to be more interesting than whole breakup, revenge-plot shenanigans that Patrick Kong film veterans will be more than used to.  But even so, when one thinks of all the interesting stories that the multitude of working bus drivers must have and yet the best director Kong can draft is a brief mention of a headline news piece or actress Harriet Yeung hamming it up as she goes into labor while onboard, just proves he wasn’t really interested in doing a deep dive into the ‘calling’ of a bus driver, and really just wanted to repackage old plot devices in a Citybus wrapper.
