A frenetic adaptation of HEAVEN SWORD AND DRAGON SABER that sadly, unlike the’78 versions from Shaw Brothers, was not seen through to completion with a sequel.  Wong Jing’s singular take is modified and chopped up enough to seriously annoy fans of the original narrative, but the early ‘90s energy of Hong Kong cinema will easily delight a general audience.  Still, it does borrow a few too many stylistic beats from SWORDSMAN 2 (1992) and TAI CHI MASTER (1993), the later…

It’s a Patrick Kong film, so you know what to expect, which is infidelity and twists upon twists.  Aside from his regular shtick, there’s the premise of an interesting film buried in here about finding a new ion when life throws a curve at you.  In some ways reminiscent of LOST IN TIME <忘不了> (2003), the bus sequences here prove to be more interesting than whole breakup, revenge-plot shenanigans that Patrick Kong film veterans will be more than used to.…
