]]>bleak, contemplative, observational. women are compared and weighed against each other at all stages of life, with marriage as the great unspeakable fate that precedes, awaits, or chases each of them down. setsuko hara is brilliant as the lead, subtle pain and quiet indignation is held in small remarks or silences. one of naruse's most explicitly feminist socio-political works. adorable cat cameo too.

]]>i'm actually exactly like lily-rose depp in nosferatu because i look kind of like her less attractive sister would also have been a priestess of ibis in a heathen age and often find myself in carnally ionate but ultimately self-destructive long distance situationships.
also i'm exactly like her in real life too because i have an increasingly strained relationship with my father and am addicted to publicly touching up on soft butches with long hair.

]]>scattered thoughts: a lot of good writhing body work going on here - i wish it kept the hallucinatory drive of the first third section. it fell into blockbuster territory the moment it asserted a battle between good and evil, i wish good never stood a chance. the witch is still his best movie because never once did you entertain the possibility of a happy ending. you aren't explained anything: you simply watch evil consume. much has been said for centuries on the greater themes of vampiric narratives re ethnic othering, queer desire, the psyche, this seemed to only ingly engage with these themes. smell was a fun diegetic action binding ellen and orlock. could have had more lilacs.
