bleak, contemplative, observational. women are compared and weighed against each other at all stages of life, with marriage as the great unspeakable fate that precedes, awaits, or chases each of them down. setsuko hara is brilliant as the lead, subtle pain and quiet indignation is held in small remarks or silences. one of naruse's most explicitly feminist socio-political works. adorable cat cameo too.
