Still digesting this but I’m sure I will eventually give this 5 stars once it’s settled into my bones.
This is so Kaufman before Kaufman but with the visual gravitas of an Italian master. Stunning from front to back. The actress playing Luisa might be the most stunning person I’ve ever seen on film and that’s in the same film as Claudia. Guido does NOT deserve that woman
Alas, this is a true work of art that one must reckon with to come to a full understanding of it.
I am in that process.

]]>Ok I get that in the context of the series this film is pretty pointless but as a standalone piece it’s really not so bad. The direction is quite good all things considered and it looks pretty great most of the time. Despite a pretty goofy script Sigourney Weaver is giving a fun performance that elevates the whole thing and Winona Ryder just being there makes everything better but her playing a sad comionate robot is lovely.
]]>Proof I will watch anything for Kiernan Shipka
]]>Heightened by the fact that I was walking the streets of Venice a week ago and randomly ended up watching a film set in Venice. This film is a great example of how great direction can make what could’ve been an alright film a great film. Every single shot directs the viewers attention to something specific. My level of investment in the story ebbed and flowed but my eyes were always locked on the screen. This is proof that you can make any shoot meaningful and interesting to look at even if there isn’t any deeper meaning to it. There’s no excuse for boring movies!
The ending is exactly what i look for in a film. Incredibly moving. I really needed a banger after watching a ton of mid movies lately. Holding back on giving this 5 stars until I get a rewatch in
]]>Only watched for Kiernan Shipka. So frustrating because there’s a really good film here but the script is painfully mid and the direction is frankly quite bad. You have an amazing cast giving solid performances but the filmmaking does nothing to that. Such a missed opportunity it’s sad but at least it’s watchable most of the time
]]>Entertaining and fun but not much else to sink your teeth into
]]>Eye-roll inducing in many moments and genuinely fun and engaging in others. Denzel giving a fun performance while still showing off his acting chops and mastery of line delivery is what gives it the extra half point
]]>First off I have to say that Tim Burton has officially lost his sauce. If you told me the same man that directed Ed Wood and Sweeney Todd directed this ugly ass movie I would smack you. Visually, the man is bankrupt of style which is truly baffling because that has always been the most recognizable thing about his films.
As for the actual story and plot, Burton isn’t completely useless yet. I’ll it the first half kinda sucks and I really didn’t want to keep watching but around the halfway mark things start to pick up in a great way. It kind of goes without saying but Michael Keaton’s performance as Beetlejuice is the only thing worthy of bringing back this IP. Keaton still has it and carries this film on his back, providing some hilarious moments. The gross humor is done extremely well and tickled me much more than I’d like to it. Some of the more annoying beats in the first half like Astrid and the boy next door are actually followed through with an interesting twist that moves the plot along in a way that feels natural and is very engaging.
I love Winona more than anyone but her performance here left a lot to be desired. It just felt like she was playing herself. Jenna Ortega was okay I guess, her character was a super boring trope so it’s hard to say what more she could have brought to it. Katherine O’Hara brings some great comedic moments to the fold.
Visually terrible, unbalanced and sometimes pointless, this film is mid in so many ways but when you have a great character that is embodied perfectly by a strong performer like Michael Keaton you can’t help but have a good time. There is some hope for Tim Burton as some of the sequences and directed well but it’s so sad to see a film of his look like a T Mobile commercial.
]]>This is a good super hero movie wtf are you all on about
]]>Where has this film been all my life? A true achievement in puppetry that I’m sadly certain we will never see the likes of again. The world and character design are so strong and vivid that they make up for any plot contrivances or weak characterization. The Dark Crystal is trying to amaze you and give a sense of wonder to its audiences and my god does it succeed. I love how unique the different species are in the way they look, move and sound. This is the kind of dark fantasy that purely brings out the little boy in me and makes him feel like it’s Saturday morning and nothing else exists apart from the images in front of him.
Astounding work.
]]>I can only blame a bad director for getting such lackluster performances from two very talented young stars (and some of my personal favorite actors). The overall conceit of this story is ridiculous; a society that has abolished emotion. Why? Why would humans collectively remove something that is so intrinsically human? There should be a strong reason for this for me to even accept this world as legitimate. But of course there isn’t, it’s just the way things are. So now we’re stuck watching a bunch of emotionless performances and somehow get emotionally invested by the end? It’s just bad and not even Guy Pierce can save it.
Some of the cinematography and production design is quite cool and original although the all white costumes are so painfully on the nose it’s irritating. A real waste of talent on so many fronts.
]]>Forgot how weirdly sexual this movie is. On the surface this doesn’t seem like a George Miller film but it truly is in the best ways. The action sequences and so well conceived and take full advantage of the setting and characters. This is peak “made for kids” content that can be enjoyed at any age
]]>I don’t care, this is so good. They don’t make fun lighthearted comedies like this anymore! At least not ones that are actually directed well with good pacing and actors who have real chemistry. A lot of the references and music date this movie, it truly is SO millennial it’s hilarious. Could watch this over and over, anytime and sometimes that’s all you need
]]>Well shot and well acted. Explores morality in a unique way that is constantly twisting the plot in unexpected ways. The only problem is the ending is a bit too fanciful for me. The first 2/3 is pretty grounded and focused on story and character but then it rushes into an action packed third act that throws realism out the window. It’s jarring and ends up sloppily tying up lose ends in a way that isn’t rewarding
]]>Categorically bad in so many ways yet bafflingly has so much going for it. It’s kind of infuriating because this was almost a Van Helsing level epic action horror flick but the writing is so subpar it renders the visuals (some of which are genuinely great) useless. The cast is talented, it looks pretty good most of the time yet the acting is terrible and it’s shot like ADHD on coke.
The only reasons to watch this are if you think Keanu is hot and for Tilda Swinton looking like that. I personally watched for Tilda and Tilda alone. Was it worth it? Yes, but it came at a cost
]]>Objectively quite good but something didn’t click with me here. Genuinely don’t know what it is but I never felt fully drawn in
]]>Classic is as classic does.
That one girl that is in this and Carrie is so important to me
]]>I’m always here for Kiernan Shipka and even more so for Nicholas Cage but this one didn’t quite stick the landing. More like it brutally broke a limb on the landing. It feels unresolved, unfortunate and unsatisfactory. If you’re gonna reveal that literal satan was the villain the whole time I expect to see the protagonist go up against Satan in his full power. Unless they’re setting it up for a sequel I feel like the story isn’t finished
]]>Really hard to get through. A domestic abuse drama pretending to be a crime thriller for half the film then trying to pick up the pieces and end with a resounding “point” as if it was intentional. The pacing is non existent, the film itself doesn’t know what to bring attention to so it hops around hyperactively yet also lingers in places for far too long. It looks alright at least and the actors do well enough for how horrendous the writing.
Favorite part? The hot Jewish lesbian of course
]]>Extremely mid but honestly not nearly as bad as I expected
]]>Didn’t like the ending
]]>Looks stunning and the cast is stellar but it doesn’t do a good job managing such a large ensemble. It jumps from one thing to the next so haphazardly that it makes the film really disorienting and feel a lot longer than it is. A shame cause there’s a really good film in there but it never got chiseled down.
]]>I’ve watched a lot of weird films and this might be the weirdest one because I’ve never seen anything that’s quite the same vibe. It’s the opposite of “it insists upon itself”, it’s like this film is ambivalent to its own existence
]]>Go birds
]]>So incredibly sad from front to back. A simple story that is masterfully presented in a way that enriches the themes it touches upon. I love that we’re slowly introduced to an environment that requires tact and cunning to make it out on top, while simultaneously learning that our protagonist severely lacks these traits. The subtle subversion of us thinking she’s going to somehow “win” Master’s Favorite Mistress to the resigned realization that nearly nothing has gone her way since she arrived there. She blunders every scheme and all of her mistakes lead to harsh consequences. This is the reality of her situation. There is no winning. Her going mad at the end may come off cliché but it’s completely in line with what has happened prior.
A beautiful piece of art that gets better the more you sit with it.
]]>Decent film but my main issue is that, as a biopic it fails to convey what is so exceptional about its subject. Chalamet has some great moments that truly did sell me on him being Bob, but overall his singing doesn’t capture what makes Dylan such an undeniably pivotal artist in music. Whenever he’s performing and they cut to someone saying “He’s really good!” like we’re at camp rock. If I had never heard of Dylan before watching this I wouldn’t be all that impressed or even really get why he got so big and I think that’s one of the main things a music biopic should nail. Cheers though for getting me to listen to Dylan again, he really was that good

]]>Man, Jim Jarmusch is truly one of the best to ever do it. He could photograph paint drying and somehow make it poetic. Amazing amazing work
]]>We need more biopics about strange, eccentric, “failed” figures. Much more interesting that success stories with a dose of addiction thrown in.

Ennio Morricone is the greatest composer of all time I don’t wanna hear it thank u
I when I thought this was the best film I’d ever seen. It must of spoke to the pretentiousness deep inside my young soul
]]>I feel the same way about this film as I do about Tár. Great character study and central performance that delves into an artist’s identity and the core of what drives them. It’s a bit messy, long and disted but so is life.
P.S. watching this with two old chatty Jewish ladies to my left certainly added to the experience. Love you girls

]]>Wow. Ok I finally get Tarkovsky now. This might be the most interesting science fiction films I’ve ever seen. The tone and style fit so well with the core themes of sci-fi yet simultaneously feel completely foreign to the genre. The world of this film feels so authentic to our world despite being a distant future. It’s not dystopian or utopian, it’s just real. It captures all the nuances of life in a way that is frankly astounding. It feels twice as long as it actually is but somehow in a good way. Got super deep at the end, almost had a panic attack thinking about my mortality deeper than ever before. I have no other words to describe the experience I’m gonna go sleep on it
