Really thought this was gonna be a brain dead no budge slasher with Australian accents, it’s closer to Canadian movies like Pin or Parents where it’s low gear weird and tries to seem American. The acting in it is better than expected, too, Michael Murphy (from Altman movies!) and Louise Fletcher are effortlessly good. Scenes where people are just quietly talking and grappling with strangeness are probably boring to a lot of people but I thought they made the horror parts seem more intense. Another Australian movie where a scary institution is behind all the horror!

Hipsters are always on a search for the uncovered oddity, the aberration against all trends that explains the past and predicts the future; even more than your taste it’s the act of participating in that search that makes you a hipster. Finding the poetry of a visionary dead alcoholic, paintings crammed with bible verses by a hypergraphiac artist, SOV gore epics from midwestern teens, unreleased demo tapes from accidental musique concrete composers who think they’re making disco records, these are the gold veins we all hope to recognize on the tables of our local flea markets and junk shops. These unsung artifacts can be a beautiful way to connect with other people, to appreciate curious or challenging perspectives, to come a little closer to understanding the ununderstandable. However, there are times when I see this scavenger hunt more cynically - as a way to make a buck or gain bragging rights or hold some strange form of ownership over art you could never create. CREEPY! Pater Noster generates fear from the tension between the connective and the exploitative ways that we interact with art. It finds revulsion in the way we down esoteric knowledge from one generation to the next, expressing it as a gore dripping demon fetus that’s birthed from a geriatric womb and attempts to regestate itself in the young.

Tubi thought I might like this and I turned it on because I thought it might be from Georgia. It turns out the people in this are from England (based on their accents), but I think the events happened in New York? It was probably filmed there too? It’s hard to tell, but that’s ok! The structure is interesting, it cuts between reenactments, interviews, and historical background segments. That’s pretty normal for a documentary, but this relies more heavily on the reenacted segments to a point where the other parts feel like interruptions. It creates a strange rhythm that actually works for me and the actors in the reenactments are pretty good. It’s about a group of people that go to classes at a new age bookstore/education center and after a meeting they have a close encounter with some pleiadians at a park. One of the girls gets possessed by a pleiadian and her boyfriend has to keep her from touching the stove and she pees her pants in one scene. The group have a few more encounters and eventually they drift apart and have to wrestle with this experience on their own. This could’ve done without the AI animated scenes that describe some of the major UFO events like Roswell and the Ariel School incident. The whole thing ends suddenly, but that’s life!

There’s a candlelit love scene that opens with a stationary three minute long establishing shot set to Canon in D with her father’s ex (played by CJ Laing)- very romantic! I’ve grown to love Chuck Vincent’s story rhythms. They usually go like this: loosely connected characters navigate their own story, usually towards the same goal, and it all builds up to a big finale where the characters come together (often literally). It’s the classy way to do it. Most of the time the characters know each other, they’re coworkers or married or roommates etc, but in this the characters are a mystery to one another and we don't get a full picture of anyone’s motives until the end. It’s a sort of slow build, but the ending is great with Jamie Gillis going fully insane. It’s nice (so nice) to see an early entry in the erotic thriller genre where there’s a NYC grime look instead of a polished LA feel.

I’m always confused why there isn’t a bigger crossover between gun nuts and eco-terrorists, it seems like a match made in heaven! Many of the hunters and fishers I know are incredibly tuned-in to nature, way more than most of the NIMBY anti-development liberals that think they’re part of the cause cuz they drive a hybrid. Shouldn’t the real-life Ted Nugent be on the side of the guy in a bear costume that’s hijacking a bulldozer instead of the sleazeball chemical plant owner that doesn’t know what poison ivy looks like? It really calls into question the authenticity of songs like “Wang Dang Sweet Poontang“ and “Yank Me Crank Me.” Speaking of gun nuts, Robert raises an excellent question about the heavy metal band in this. Director Zielinski will forever be a legend for making Screwballs, but even with juggs out haircuts this never achieves the high-zaniness of that masterpiece.

Another story shows a man who disavows Christianity and has to live in a post-rapture sci-fi dystopia where everyone has 666 tattooed on them. The dude gets in a street fight with a leather jacket hoodlum gang; there’s a great shot straight out of a Chick tract where a guy with 666 tatted on his hand flicks opens a switchblade. Futurecops shoot lasers at old ladies and ancient Christians are stoned to death. A great thing about kung fu movies that doesn’t really happen with other genres is that you can go into them thinking it’ll be normal but 15 minutes in you realize it’s one of the weird ones. I was looking at martial arts movies on tubi and this one was listed as “9 Venoms” and it was directed by Chang Cheh so I figured it would be like Five Deadly Venoms. I was all settled in to watch monks training other monks and getting into brawls at the restaurant. You’ll never know how excited I was when one character accidentally stumbled into hell and gets possessed by nine demons that can turn into bloodsucking flying skulls. The nine demons are played by one beautiful lady and eight giggling children who are covered in blood and do wild gymnastics tricks! There’s wirework, experimental electronic music, colorful lighting, elaborate fight sequences, a guy named “Gary,” gushing blood, and only a whiff of plot. At one point the children kill a guy so bad that he disappears and there’s a slide whistle sound when his empty robe falls to the floor. The guy possessed by demons had a haircut like my ex girlfriend, but she was possessed by way more than nine demons.

This has some pretty good footage I’d never seen and it has that jazzy Erroll Morris style, but the temptation to blame secret government operations for every weird thing that happens is always so boring! Tom O’Neill asserts that Manson learned mind control from cointelpro/mkultra operations but can’t really offer any proof of this. I have no doubt that Charlie came into with govt spooks (back then you couldn’t get your hands on that much LSD without bumping into them), but it seems more likely that the family and the govt were just swimming in the same waters without much knowledge of what the other was up to. The concepts of mind control/persuasion/indoctrination/seduction/power consolidation have been around forever in different forms and for different ends, mkultra is the controlled inhumane government thinktank version of these ideas while Manson represented the chaotic hustler crime underworld. At the same time Jim Morrison was using these concepts in the world of pop music, L Ron Hubbard took what he needed for Scientology, and Madison Avenue was selling the whole country cigarettes and insurance. It wouldn’t be long before tech CEOs were duping venture capitalists into dumping money into garbage startups and sleazebags were using “The Game” to get laid. Famously Manson was reading Dale Carnegie’s “How to Win Friends and Influence People” and cribbing ideas from Scientology, but if you take a step back you can see that his methods were not much different than a pimp wrangling their stable. In Iceberg Slim’s 1967 autobiography, Pimp, he wrote “A pimp is happy when his whores giggle. He knows they are still asleep …. A pimp is the loneliest bastard on Earth. He’s gotta know his whores. He can’t let them know him. He's gotta be god all the way.” Charlie was a little guy who spent most of his life behind bars, manipulation was a form of self preservation and who better to learn from than the pimps and hustlers he spent time with? His story is fascinating and weird but it doesn't need to include the CIA to explain it.

Plus one star for including “Lotsapoppa” interview footage, but minus one star for not mentioning Zezozose Zadfrack Glutz

Fritz Lang! What a director! He put an exclamation point in the very title of this movie! This is a pure political thriller where political violence motivates a community to make personal sacrifice against an oppressive regime. I feel like a lot of political thrillers from the 40s just treat Nazis as run-of-the-mill villains and the plot will be about some double agent trying to cross enemy lines with a piece of microfilm. Hangmen has characters facing real consequences that affect their loved ones and the whole city; it lays out Nazi methods of intimidation as a way to destabilize communities and makes their threat overwhelming. It’s frightening how replicable the top-down authoritarian ideology is, politics built for the industrial age (which we’re still in). Brian “Quatermass” Donlevy added a nice bit of grounded weirdness to the character where he tries to stay stoic despite the disreality he’s gotten himself into. Also, Dwight Frye is apparently in this??

During the incredible opening scene Jack Wrangler (who has a rich, sonorous voice) says “I’ll bet you’re dying to get my cock in your mouth, pumping away with my balls flapping against your chin,” then a little later Samantha Fox (who is matching Wrangler’s intensity) smashes a vase of flowers and screams “now do you want me to tear this whole fucking place apart or are YOU GONNA EAT SOME PUSSY?!?!” The raincoat crowd probably caught their nutt in the first 10 minutes but the rest of the movie is pretty fun, particularly when Vanessa Del Rio and Roger Caine are doing a performance of Romeo and Juliet while fucking (there’s a great shot where Del Rio is holding up a mirror to see the “action” while they’re doing doggystyle).

I wonder what pervert convention brought together Chuck Vincent, Joe D’Amato and Harry Alan Towers? “Warrior Queen” makes this sound like a fantasy movie, but this should’ve had a historical melodrama title like “Sex Slaves of Pompeii” or something. Sybil Danning seems bored, but Donald Pleasence gets to ham it up and in one scene he tries to catch birds with a big butterfly net. There’s a gladiator death sport involving a razor blade frisbee, but it’s lamer than it sounds.

https://www.drcleanproductions.com/dr-clean-magazine

Here’s an excerpt from my article:

Film culture has developed an obsession with form, a bottomless search for the ideal version of every movie. Enter into any online movie forum and you’ll see countless comments about run times, aspect ratios, director’s cuts, audio sources, formats, transfers, color correction, all this metadata has more to do with industry standards than with the way that we experience watching a movie. We’re robbed of enjoyment when we concern ourselves with what’s formally proper. There’s no wrong way to watch a movie, but it feels like a shame to get caught up in the gap between reality and ideals. Part of this formalism comes from a decades-long streamlining of the industry that has also resulted in the dreary data-driven platform optimized content cinema of today. Every edit is on an action, no one “crosses the line,” every character and cast member seems designed to capture a demographic, and plots are torturously airtight. Our current moment feels like the buttoned up 1940s where a combination of tightening morals, wartime nationalism, and rigid distribution due to studio run movie theaters led to a generally duller era. Independent film in the 1940s was so anemic that it was called “Poverty Row” and Hollywood was raking in profits but stuck in a creative rut. In the 2020s getting an independent movie made may be easier, but access to profits and an audience are much harder. However, we have the benefit today of access to past eras when movies were wilder and less concerned with formalism and mass appeal. We can look to the past, not out of nostalgia, but to relearn the joy of imperfection so that we can recognize and celebrate it in the movies of today. Luckily Something Weird Video is a company that’s been dedicated to preserving raw and bizarre cinema for over 30 years. They wallow in the weird and want to share it with the world.

Y’all ever see those bootleg toy folks that make their own custom versions of obscure characters? I wish one of those dudes would make a Gulfax toy. This was fantastic, no one took it seriously in the best way possible. They half-assed it with their whole ass. Every few minutes something stupid happens or a wacky as fuck creature shows up. Bo Svenson is the greatest casting because he seems deeply out of place in a fantasy setting. His features are weathered in a “I’m trying to forget the horrors of my past” kind of way, not an “I’ve vanquished every foe” way, his movements are graceless but direct like an 80s wrestler, even his hair seems wrong. He’s clearly having a great time and his “what the fuck is all this hobbit shit?” attitude makes him the perfect audience surrogate for me (a doughy 45 year old dad that’s stayed up late too many nights drinking straight whiskey to try to forget my mistakes).

Sketchy Comedy 4465 https://letterboxd.sitesdebloques.org/fleamarked/list/sketchy-comedy/ letterboxd-list-57585614 Fri, 9 May 2025 09:27:33 +1200 <![CDATA[

There’s nothing more poisonous for a comedy movie than plot and story. Just bring the LAFFS, man! The sketch comedy movie flap represents a moment when the audience was too hip for a typical narrative but too jaded for the wholesomeness of network TV - they wanted uncut hilarious hardcore raunch. Influenced by predecessors like Monty Python and Ernie Kovacs, comedy troupes like Second City, the Firesign Theatre, the Groundlings, the Ace Trucking Company and many more were all creating innovative ways to deliver the yuks to the boomers who had entered young adulthood. Director Ken Shapiro was a child actor that appeared regularly on The Milton Berle Show and other TV variety shows, as a young adult he helped to form the comedy troupe Channel One with Chevy Chase and Richard Belzer. Channel One used video recordings shown to live audiences to parody TV of the time, this would eventually shape Shapiro’s Groove Tube which raked in millions in 1974. Young Lorne Michaels was working with Shapiro when he pitched Saturday Night Live which would become the most dominant and influential expression of sketch comedy. The Groove Tube was a bugle call for the comedy troupe generation who would fill screens for years with plotless satires, many of which were only excuses for drug humor or gratuitous nudity sprinkled with the cheapest of gags. The typical form was a channel changing structure which would go from one sketch to the next under the premise that this was just another night at home watching the ol b_ tube. The medium is the message, baby! In 1989 Weird Al took the idea for UHF, adding both a story AND a plot, a decision which hurt the box office totals. Like any subgenre it faded out as folks got tired of it and attempts to revive it like Movie 43 or inAPPropriate Comedy were unsuccessful. In 1991 F.A.R.T.: The Movie was *released* (coff coff) straight to video with no fanfare, a silent but deadly end to the genre. 💨

Use the hashtag #ssoss25 for your lists. Everyone that completes the challenge gets a free mystery zine!!

Have you ever “lightened up?” I haven’t. I’m a gloomy glower-er but my doctor and my therapist and the kid at the lemonade stand have all told me (within the last 36 hours) to LIGHTEN UP. I dunno, I must be giving off BAD VYBES. The summer is gonna be unyieldingly sizzlin here in the American south so let’s cool off, lighten up, slip on our “tea shades,” loosen our ties, kick off our shoes, have a do-si-do around the ol dancefloor, drop the kids off at the pool and have a few HAR-DEE YUKS whydontwe???

I tried to make the categories pretty broad so that you could have a list you would look forward to completing. At first it was gonna be all boner comedy categories, but I’m sensitive as shit so I figured that wasn’t fair to people with erectile dysfunction. If you have trouble finding stuff you want to see in one category then just make up your own category (except the CHUCK VINCENT category, you’ve gotta watch a Chuck movie).

June 16-22 SNL Week Saturday Night Live is celebrating 50 years on the air, can NBC last for another 50 years??

June 23-29 Cat Week Cats! They’re earth’s funniest creatures (sorry chimps, you’re psychos)

June 30- July 6 Puke Week! Throwing up isn’t very funny, but making your internet friends watch a puke movie is!

July 7-13 Teen Movie Hell Week From the book description on the Bazillion Points website:
All-seeing author Mike “McBeardo” Madden (Heavy Metal Movies) es righteous judgment over the entire (teen movie) genre, one boobs-and-boner opus at a time. In more than 350 reviews and sidebars, Teen Movie Hell lays the crucible of coming-of-age comedies bare, from party-hearty farces such as The Pom-Pom Girls, Up the Creek, and Fraternity Vacation to the extreme insanity exploding all over King Frat, Screwballs, The Party Animal, and Surf II: The End of the Trilogy.

July 14-20 Vanity Project Week “…it might be said that the specific remedy for vanity is laughter, and that the one failing that is essentially laughter is vanity.” Are these products of ionate and industrious independent filmmakers OR outrageous glimpses into the inner workings of self-obsessed maniacs??

July 21-27 Eddie Griffin Week This motherfucker is funny!

July 28 - Aug 3 Screwball Comedy Just imagine, the Great Depression is raging and you’re getting less than a fin a week at the rubber boiling factory but it only costs two bits to go to the movies all day so let’s watch some quick-talkin dames match wits with some dopey joes!

Aug 4-10 Stoner Comedy Week I don’t gas reefers anymore, but I love it when people in movies do!

Aug 11-17 Whoopi Goldberg Week She’s become a corny tv lady these days, but let’s not forget that at her peak Whoopi was one of the funniest people alive

Aug 18-24 indie comix week When I was a kid I used to read Mad Magazine and Cracked, so when I got a little older it didn’t take much convincing to pick up Eightball and Hate. I’m an OG in the “complaining about superheroes” game and my scars were anointed on the Comics Journal message board!

Aug 25-31 Natasha Lyonne Week There’s a new season of her weirdo mystery of the week coming out (I can’t the name rn, you can look it up) and she’s been steadily delivering chuckles for decades now.

Sept 1-7 John Waters Best of the Year Week To be fair, these movies aren’t ALL funny, but JOHN WATERS is funny. He’s become more of a writer and public commentator these days, but he helps keep the arthouse from taking itself too seriously with his annual top ten lists while celebrating the comically serious.

Sept 8-14 Sketchy Comedy Week “…plotless satires, many of which were only excuses for drug humor or gratuitous nudity sprinkled with the cheapest of gags. The typical form was a channel changing structure which would go from one sketch to the next under the premise that this was just another night at home watching the ol boob tube. The medium is the message, baby!”

Sept 15-21 Mockumentary Week “Ladies and gentleman, by way of introduction, this is a film about trickery - and fraud. About lies. Tell it by the fireside or in a marketplace or in a movie. Almost any story is almost certainly some kind of - lie. But not this time. No, this is a promise. During the next hour, everything you hear from us is really *true* and based on solid facts.”

Sept 22-28 Chuck Vincent Week No one did it like Chuck! He’s the unsung king of Up All Night comedy, a queer director making the straightest romcoms but throwing in muscle studs and drag queens. His films explore the concept of romance from almost every angle - he loved love!

Lee Frost and Bob Cresse were an important duo in the LA exploitation film scene, this is a (probably incomplete) list of their collaborations. The themes of their films were confrontational - police culture brutality, Nazi prison camps, sexual violence, and they made a number of mondo shockumentary films. While the pair were fluid with their duties, Frost was generally the director while Cresse was the producer. They used various credits and production companies with respectably bland names like Olympic International Films, Cresse-Roma, International Theatrical Amusements, and, of course, B & M Productions.

Cresse’s friend and rival Dave Friedman had this to say about the pair:

“Cresse handled Frost like a fine violinist would
handle a Stradivarius. Cresse would say to the industry as a whole, ‘Lee Frost is the best; there is no one who can approach him. He is the finest.’ And that’s all Frost wanted. Cresse didn't need to pay Frost; he just told him how good he was ... That’s sad but true!”

Frost’s career spanned into the 90s, moving from one market to another, one year making weirdo horror oddities like The Thing With Two Heads while directing redneck drive-in favorites like Dixie Dynamite a few years later. Cresse left the industry in the mid-70s after being shot in the street. Friedman again:

“Cresse always liked to carry a gun. One night he was in a bookstore at Hollywood and Western. He looks up and there's 3 guys beating the hell out of this broad. They got her down on the ground and they're kicking her. Cresse runs over and goes to his car and takes his gun out and holds the gun up, saying, “Stop! I'm calling the police! Stop or I'll shoot!” And this guy whirls on him and says, “We are the police, motherfucker!” and shot him twice right in the stomach. And then the guy shot his dog. He almost died ...and he never really recovered from that, mentally. LAPD—they're “Dirty Harry's” down here!“

I'm not familiar with all of his movies, so if there's one that needs to be added, let me know. I'm hoping one of you millennials can tell me if Rugrats Gone Wild or the Wild Thornberrys Movie count as road movies. I went ahead and added Baby Driver cuz it takes place in cars for most of the runtime.

Terry Southern wrote funny stuff! Not an Ivy League guy like his literati contemporaries, but he fought in WWII and used the GI Bill to study at the Sorbonne in Paris. He would have stories published in (among others) Harper’s, Esquire, the (CIA founded) Paris Review, The Realist, National Lampoon, High Society, and, of course, Hustler. Peter Sellers claimed Southern was his favorite writer and gave his books to director Stanley Kubrick who invited him to help turn Dr. Strangelove into a proper satire.

A 1965 FBI investigation revealed that Southern had “one of the finest collections of pornographic films in the country…high quality, the best made, including some made for King Farouk.” He would later pitch the idea of an artfully made adult film to director Kubrick (who would go on to attempt this challenge with Eyes Wide Shut)- “You ever watch a porno, like Lesbians in the Produce Section, or Cheerleader Tryouts with Coach Lester, and find yourself critiquing the plot, the acting, and even the lighting? Why don’t you, Stan my man, make a real porno? A smut flick, an all-out fuckfest, with trained thespians and a script from a literary talent. A grand guy of a literary talent?”

Criterion channel has a Terry Southern correction up right now. Here are the movies I know of that are written or adapted from works by Terry Southern or they feature him in one way or another. Probably incomplete, no order

Every generation gets the pornography they deserve. 1968 was a wild year! All the turmoil and chaos of assassinations, election year campaigning, protests, and riots bled over into the dirty movies that were being made. You couldn’t just sit back and enjoy your smut, you had to process heavy themes before you could catch a nutt. These movies in some way reflect the tensions and forces that the culture was dealing with. Not every movie on the list is erotic, but they all feel like part of the conversation around the topic of sexuality, intentionally or not.

69 EsSINtials from Something Weird Video 3t254i https://letterboxd.sitesdebloques.org/fleamarked/list/69-essintials-from-something-weird-video/ letterboxd-list-42343243 Mon, 4 Mar 2024 09:33:17 +1300 <![CDATA[

In my late teens and 20s Something Weird Video occupied a huge spot right in the front of my brain. I watched a ton of their releases and poured over every catalog as they came out. I forced friends and roommates to watch objectively terrible movies (that I still love) like “Thar She Blows” and “Mantis in Lace” and I’d put on their Twisted Sex compilations during parties. As much as I love them, I’m a poser compared to some of the hopeless cases that I’ve met in online forums. What are their lives like? Who has time to see that many volumes of Bucky Beaver’s Big Bust Loops??? Still, I feel like I’ve been steeped in their catalog long enough to act as a sommelier of Something Weird. This isn’t the 69 BEST SWV movies, it isn’t my 69 FAVORITE SWV movies, my goal was to highlight 69 of the MOST SWV movies. Is Teaserama better than Eyes Without a Face? Of course not! But what list of SWV essentials couldn’t include one of those old strip tease classics? Why isn’t Carnival of Souls on the list? Because it doesn't have Rene Bond in it, that’s why! Besides, EVERY gray market video distributor put out well loved public domain movies like Carnival of Souls, Night Tide and Night of the Living Dead. I also didn’t want to load the list down with more than two or three movies from prolific SWV auteurs like Doris Wishman or Herschell Gordon Lewis; I tried to put in a little bit of everything that SWV was known for. Feel free to argue in the comments and keep your eyes peeled for a zine coming soon!

“The sets present an intensification of forms, colours and sounds. Jerry Lewis's character, more involuted than infantile, is such that everything resonates in his head and soul; but, conversely, his smallest sketched or inhibited gestures, and the inarticulate sounds he comes out with, in turn resonate, because they set off a movement of world which goes as far as catastrophe (the destruction of the set at the music professor's in The Patsy), or which travels from one world to another, in a pulverizing of colours, a metamorphosis of forms and a mutation of sounds (The Nutty Professor).”

From Wikipedia:
Heinz G. Konsalik, pseudonym of Heinz Günther (28 May 1921 – 2 October 1999) was a German novelist.

At the age of 16, Günther wrote feature articles for Cologne newspapers. In 1938 he published what he considered his “first usable poem.” He then ed the Hitler Youth, Area 11, Middle Rhine Valley. In December 1939 he started working for the Gestapo, the Nazi secret police. His next drama, which he completed in March 1940, was called Gutenberg. In the same year Günther sought hip in the Nazi writer's union, the Reich Chamber of Writers (Reichsschrifttumskammer) but was initially rejected due to the limited scope of his literary work. Later, however, having met the requirements, he received the chamber hip required for regular publication of literary works.

After graduating from the Humboldt-Gymnasium in Cologne, which required hip in the Nazi party and the teaching of its discredited but then pervasive racial theories, he studied medicine and later switched to theatre studies, literary history and German literature. During World War II he became a war correspondent in and later came to the Eastern Front as a soldier, where he suffered a serious arm wound at Smolensk in the Soviet Union. He was later to describe his wartime experiences in Russia as a “monstrous school.”

Cirio H Santiago began his film career as a teen in the 1950s working for his father's studio, Premier Productions, editing Tagalog language films. He would direct his first film at 19 and developed a successful career in the Philippines, eventually realizing that he would reach a wider audience if he produced films in English and cast international actors. Roger Corman had a long history of taking advantage of lower production costs of filming overseas, so in the early 1970s he and Santiago crossed paths and a working partnership and friendship developed. The two would remain close until Santiago's death in 2008.

Psychotronic 1950s movies were brooding and paranoid, signs of a culture losing faith in its institutions - giant nuclear beasts, aliens, MIBs, dinosaurs, bugs, cryptids, fallout mutants, zombies, mad scientists, super heroes, robots, UFOs, and tragedies of science all get screen time and their own theme music. I’ve been watching these all my life and here are 100 of my favorites. The 60s had it all! Gothic horror, paranoid thrillers, old school monsters, occult, kaiju, exploitation, gore, erotica, it was all over the place. Barbara Steele and George Romero emerged, Vincent Price and Christopher Lee solidified their star status and we still had some of the icons of the past like Boris Karloff and Alfred Hitchcock. At their best these movies used our assumptions and our suspicions against us. Assumptions are the horror filmmaker’s best friend, the talented ones can fill in a story such that the audience isn’t even aware that they’ve made any assumptions until they’re upended. Who would assume a kindly old neighbor to run a devil cult? Who would assume that the lead actress in a movie would get offed in the middle of the story? It’s easy to assume the wild-eyed caterer that waves around a hatchet might be a murderer, but who would’ve suspected that he’d WAGGLE THE GUTS IN FRONT OF THE CAMERA? Some of these movies may seem classy with all these European ladies roaming around in castles wearing frilly, puffy clothes holding candelabras, but don’t be fooled! Behind all that gothic stoicism are mindbending stories of horny S&M psychedelia!

Some of the movies on the list might not be considered traditional horror movies, but they all contain some kind of horror elements or influenced the genre. Faster Pussycat and The Virgin Spring would both influence the home-invasion subgenre, Planet of the Apes was an attempt at the most fantastic version of a man-in-a-gorilla-suit movie, while HAL from 2001 is as cold blooded as any slasher villain. I’ve included plenty of shorts and underground films that are more comfortable with explicit content, but I’ve left off Mondo movies and biker flicks even though many of them have just as much of a place on this list.

 1. Night of the Living Dead
 2. Rosemary's Baby
 3. The Masque of the Red Death
 4. Faster, Pussycat! Kill! Kill!
 5. The Haunting
 6. The Virgin Spring

WEEK 15: BONUS WILDCARD WEEK (September 22 - 28)

Founded in 1990 by Seattle punk show promoter Mike Vraney, Something Weird Video is an ever changing distributor and champion of bizarre cinema from the 20th Century. Most of the titles they’ve handled are a gumbo of contradictory tones that mix the horrific, childish and sexy all at once. After Vraney’s ing in 2014, the artist Lisa Petrucci (Vraney’s widow) took over and has moved the label in new directions by partnering with companies like Severin and Kino for physical releases and entering theatrical distribution with the American Genre Film Archive, you can even stream some of the titles they’ve released on platforms like Night Flight Plus, Arrow, Shudder, Amazon Prime and Tubi. Hell, they’ve even reached chi-chi sites like Criterion, Metrograph and Mubi. At the beginning of 2024 Petrucci announced that the company’s website and mail order wing would be shutting down at the end of the year. This isn’t the end of SWV as they’ll continue to license titles through their partners and it certainly isn’t the end of the line for many of these films, but it will leave many of their titles homeless for better or for worse. Where will you be able to get Sin in the Suburbs, Confessions of a Psycho Cat, The Big Snatch or Love Goddesses of Blood Island??? I’m sure many of these will get a deluxe blu-ray sooner or later, but don’t risk it when you can get them for $5.99 RIGHT NOW! Let’s all spend the summer as nature intended - nak at home watching nud camp movies! Each week highlights something that SWV is known for in one way or another, but hopefully there’ll be enough wiggle room with most of these topics that you won’t have trouble finding something good.

Joe Sarno week (June 16 - 22) Joe Sarno was called the Bergman of 42nd St, but don’t let that stop you from watching his movies! He was able to shape dramatic stories that were entertaining and of-the-moment while working with tight budgets and inexperienced performers but he never lost sight of why people were buying the tickets - HOT SEX!

Uschi Digard week (June 23 - 29) Digard is best known for her work with Russ Meyer but she became an SWV fan favorite for two gargantuan reasons, her charm and her prolific career. The Swiss actress fled to America in 1968 and began a long career filling the silver screen from corner to corner with her overflowing positive energy. Show the lady some respect and watch one of her movies.

Roadshow Rarities (June 30 - July 6) In the old days of theatrical releases some of the more lavish movies would be promoted by holding limited screenings in large cities. These roadshow releases would generate hype before the nationwide release and allow producers to tweak the film to the audience’s reaction. This model also worked for low budget productions that may have had no intention of a wide release. These explo roadshows traveled an informal circuit of theaters, churches, revival tents, high school auditoriums and anywhere else they could run a projector. They frequently promised more than they delivered and left town before the angry audience could catch up to them. Through the restoration efforts of SWV many of these movies have survived to piss audiences off to this very day!

Bleeding Skull’s Top 50 (July 7 - 13) The middle-brow champions of low-brow horror, Bleeding Skull has picked out some of their favorites from the SWV catalog. They neglected to put I Drink Your Blood or EEGAH! on the list, but I think I can forgive them since they included Ship of Monsters.

Herschell Gordon Lewis week (July 14 - 20) HG seemed to truly love packing theaters. He’s most famous for introducing gore to horror movies, but he’d fill any need that the audience had. He made every genre of exploitation __ - even kids movies! Gore movies would’ve happened eventually, but Herschell seemed to take joy in crafting gross-out shocks for unsuspecting cineasts. INTERESTING FACT! HG Lewis was a huge fan of Kentucky Fried Chicken and had them cater all of his productions. Col. Harland Sanders himself appeared in Lewis’ Blast Off Girls!

Doris Wishman week (July 21 - 27) Doris made the loopiest of movies. A self-proclaimed prude who made nudist camp movies, her filmography is filled with contradictions. When she tried to be mean spirited with something like Bad Girls Go To Hell there was always an undercurrent of silliness and fun, but when she tried to be silly and fun in things like Keyholes Are For Peeping there was an underlying seediness and grime that couldn’t be wiped off. It’s hard not to love her!

Golden Oldies Week (July 27 - August 3) Something Weird Video have released such a wide range of movies over the last 30 years that trying to categorize them can be tricky. They started out as a gray market mail order distributor (aka a bootlegger) not unlike the Cape Copy Center or Sinister Cinema and eventually moved into the niche se ploit titles that would set them apart. The movies on this list are the kind of cult genre titles that were the bread and butter of many of the bootleg companies of the 90s and most were not exclusive to SWV. If you look in the catalogs or on the website these would be under categories like “Nightmare Theatre’s Late Night Chill-O-Rama Horror Show,” “Jaws of the Jungle,” “Sci-fi Late Night Creature Feature Show,” or “Spies, Thighs & Private Eyes.” Many of these are currently available as s from the SWV site (until the end of 2024)!

Softcore Smorgasbord (August 4 - 10) All of the movies on this list have at one time or another been available through Something Weird Video. I’m sure I’ve missed some but many of them are still available on their website (until the end of 2024). These are their vintage softcore movies listed under categories with ridiculous names like: Nudie Cuties, Sexy Shockers, Sexo a-go-go, Twisted Sex, and Bucky Beaver’s Double Softies.

Rene Bond week (August 11 - 17) Rene Bond could brighten up even the most dreary productions, and she was in plenty of them. In the early adult scene she was one of the better actors, particularly when it came to comedy, though she could squeeze into some leather and throw the whips around when the role called for it. Bond appeared in somewhere near 100 films, thanks to her affable professionalism she worked with many filmmakers multiple times and regularly performed with her boyfriend Ric Lutze. Her career received an enhancement when she became one of the first stars to get a boobjob. She retired from film in the late-70s just as the porno chic era was dying down, but before the video era. You can find her in a ton of SWV titles, so take yer pick!

Findlay Week (August 18 - 24) Husband and wife Michael and Roberta Findlay made mean-spirited films. They collaborated on films like Take Me Naked, The Ultimate Degenerate, and the notorious Flesh Trilogy, plus they actually looked like criminals - walking mug shots! You expect to see them glowering on the cover of one of those tabloids next to a headline like “KIDNAPPER COUPLE COLLECTED VICTIMS FINGERS.” Instead they were pornographers which did make them like criminals in their day. A lot of the filmmakers of their era would claim they only made this kind of movie because there was money in it, but Michael and Roberta were sincere adherents. Even when audience tastes changed and the couple were divorced they continued to make their own films that mixed in elements of kink and cruelty.

Johnny Legend’s Untamed Video (August 25 - 31) Welcome to the wonderfully wacky world of Johnny Legend's Untamed Video! Take a walk on the wild side with troublesome teenagers, sleazy sex kittens, way-out hippies, country bumpkins, big bad bikers, Mexican wrestlers, and every other variety of social deviant you can think of.

Frank Henenlotter's Sexy Shockers (September 1 - 7) We all know Frank Hennenlotter as the director of the Basket Case films, Bad Biology, Brain Damage, and Frankenhooker, but he’s also a cinematic curator of the crass! An academic of the pathetic! A steward of sleaze! A sexton of the sexual and the Sexy Shocker series is his curio cabinet of crudity. Skin and sin are mixed together in these homegrown oddities, South American rediscoveries, and Eurohorror almost-classics. Your mind may recoil with erotic revulsion at the sights contained within these films, so choose wisely!

Dragon Art Theatre Week (September 8 - 14) Pssst. Hey…buddy… you wanna see some naked movies with your mom in em? This stuff here is split tail in action, my friend, straight from the vaults at Something Weird Video. It’s all the HARD X stuff on the SWV site that I could find on Letterboxd and let me tell you, when I say HARD X I mean it! These movies show it all baby, whatever sort of freaky shit you’re into, these movies have got it. Nipple clamps, ice cubes on the balls, lesbos, homos, cumshots, whips, leather, you name it! Plus we got air conditioning and the cleanest bathrooms on the deuce. Just step inside … and if you need some luudes or a lid talk to my man Shifty over at the popcorn counter. Tell him Klon sent you.

69 EsSINtial SWV Titles (September 15 - 21) This isn’t the 69 BEST SWV movies, it isn’t my 69 FAVORITE SWV movies, my goal was to highlight 69 of the MOST SWV movies.

BONUS WILDCARD WEEK (September 22 - 28) Go order something from the SWV website and watch it!

Stay sick!

Here's 30 random movies with psychotronic fave Robert Vaughn! He was always playing a corrupt politician or the businessman that wants to turn the neighborhood into a shopping mall. In the 60s he became famous as Napoleon Solo on the TV spy show The Man From U.N.C.L.E. and received an Oscar nomination for Best ing Actor in the Paul Newman vehicle The Young Philadelphians. Vaughn earned a PhD in communications from University of Southern California, writing his thesis on the negative influence of the House Committee of Un-American Activities. In the 90s/00s he would star in commercials for law firms all over the country (I had a Gary Martin Hays magnet on my fridge with him on it). And yet he still found time in his long career to work with Roger Corman, Joe D'Amato, Hulk Hogan, Chuck Norris, Kinji Fukasaku, Fred Olen Ray, Jim Wynorski and tons of other weirdos!

DEFILERS OF VIRTUE! Pre 4n6225 1966 Occultists https://letterboxd.sitesdebloques.org/fleamarked/list/defilers-of-virtue-pre-1966-occultists/ letterboxd-list-17900004 Fri, 14 May 2021 08:46:36 +1200 <![CDATA[

Anton LeVay's Church of Satan began meeting in 1966, kicking off a wave of films featuring occultists and devil worshippers. Postmodernism mixed with Crowley’s sensationalism and Randian individualism had taken the SECRET out of the secret societies. Not much later the idea of a cult was folded in on itself once more by Charles Manson, then Jonestown, the Branch Davidians, Heaven’s Gate, and many more. In the age of social media we think of cults as tight, isolated groups with charismatic and manipulative leaders/figureheads, they may even be divorced entirely from religion. Cults today look more like pyramid schemes that exploit ’ faith around ideas of wellness, finance, even technology. This list is more interested in a time when occultists operated in the shadows, under hood and cloak; a time when you were supposed to wear a MASK to the blood orgy, not it to YouTube! This list isn’t complete and some inclusions are a stretch (Les Vampires, for example, is about a crime ring, but it seems to have informed the way cults behaved in later films). I left off a lot of things that seem more like folk tales such as the countless “tempted by the Devil” movies (like Faust), or witch revenge movies (like Black Sunday).

We take for granted the power of classic horror movie icons - vampires, Frankenstein and his monster, mummies, werewolves, hunchbacks, gorillas, zombies, haunted houses, spooky castles, skeletons, ghosts, even dark and stormy nights. None of them have their origins in film, but they’ve all been reimagined in the medium countless times. Some of these are literary creations (Frankenstein), some are found in folklores around the world (vampires and werewolves), while others are xenophobic totems of a colonialist worldview (mummies and zombies). They’re all still present in the stories we tell and they can still have power, but by the late 50s their constant reimagining had sloughed off untranslatable elements and fossilized what remained into idioms. By the 1960s audiences around the world needed no explanation of these figures, all became ready-mades that could be plunked into any scenario. For example, El Santo doesn’t need a primer in the concept of a werewolf, if he sees one he’s gonna wrestle it. The movies on this list represent a global trend in independent cinema that began in the 50s where the fun of these pre-film horror icons was presented uncritically with no attempt to present a new vision. The cultures that understand the monster idioms have been shaped by the influence of cinema; these monsters have become folk artifacts of film culture, understood around the world and creating pathways for new film idioms.

Presented for your consideration, New Horizine - A tribute to Roger Corman! Available now in my online store! Here are just 50 of my favorite films made by Roger Corman. While his involvement in some of these films was minimal, they all FEEL like a Corman production in one way or another. He’s notorious for his minimal budgets, but there’s always a hook that adds the illusion of production value to his films; sometimes the hook is a star past their prime, sometimes it’s a topical event like bikers or LSD, and sometimes it’s just good old sex and violence. Hopefully this list presents a somewhat cohesive sampling of his career.
