What starts off as a generic and almost dull slasher, turns into a fun mystery thriller that's neatly written and executed. It's a genius idea to blend horror with time loops, and the end product is highly satisfactory. It has all the tropes of both the genres, but feels exciting and fresh enough to keep you watching. Good performances, a genuinely well done reveal, and an engaging story keep this one going.

A masterclass of deescalation. Starts big and ends small, but never fails to pack a punch. McQuarrie brings heightened spy antics and mind games, to an already ridiculously fun globetrotting adventure. Rebecca Ferguson is a gift to the franchise, and plays Ilsa and all her little complexities to perfection. Cruise, Renner, Pegg and Rhames are unstoppable and they should really have retained Brandt for the later missions. An all timer moterbike chase and an all timer suspense building set piece at the opera. Endlessly rewatchable and possibly one of the greatest spy espionage films out there.

A tension building masterclass by Sidney Lumet. It poses all the difficult questions, about the worth of human life and sacrifice, paving way for something that is intellectually and morally stimulating, to a point where it's relevant and scary, even decades after it's release. Juggles a bit too much with believability as it reaches the conclusion, but still leaves a bitter aftertaste. Truly masterful, and utterly terrifying.

Loads of blood and grime, but completely lacks sauce. It's take on generational trauma maybe fresh for the franchise, but the characters are so shallow and uninteresting, I just couldn't care. A couple of cool kills, but the looming sense of death creeping upon is completely lost. I genuinely wanted to love this, but it just left me with a feeling of disappointment and dullness.

A terrific sendoff to cinema's greatest franchise that consistently delivered creative action set pieces and spy antics for nearly 30 years. The bleakest and most topical mission yet, traverses in the most unexpected ways with a dialogue heavy build up and a nearly hour long payoff that almost fittingly breaks patterns and norms established by the franchise. The formula is there in essence, but the execution keeps steering in interesting directions. There's a lot of exposition for sure, and some of it could have used a trim, but barely does it not lend into the commentary or progression of plot. Long winded for sure, engaging nonetheless.

There's a constant sense of finality that this one effortlessly nails, ensuring the weight of every decision translates in the biggest way possible. The scope and scale are off the charts, and come with compromises in character development and emotional resonance, but it's fairly made up by the charming presence of characters who always show you a good time. Sure, it's bloated and maybe even a mess, but it's a beautiful one at that, with its heart in the right place, wanting to deliver a cinematic experience, not simply in of action, but ideas and conflicts as well.

The anxiety inducing underwater portion and the stressful biplane finale, are both fine examples of classic mission sequences taken to the extreme, leaving you on the edge throughout. It's strangely endearing to see the previous films tied up together, and more than that, the franchise did more than enough to deserve it.

Cruise is Cruise as usual, charming his way through and delivering pure cinema one last time, and it's always a pleasure to catch him on IMAX. Flawed for sure in the way it puts an utterly cartoonish and unthreatening villain, and a couple convineances in the initial stretch, but the highs are so high that any of that barely matters. Thoroughly satisfied, with what is turning out to be a highly divisive mission film, but I for one am glad it turned out exactly the way it did.

DePalma's Mission Impossible is nothing short of a masterclass in writing, tension building and suspense. A thriller more than an action movie, the first in the franchise features incredible spy antics, paranoia inducing action, and a tight script with brilliantly sprinkled breadcrumbs for all it's reveals. The joy of rewatching this one is to notice all the minor details that beautifully build up all throughout, towards a final twist that's ridiculously fun. A terrific beggining to a near perfect franchise.

Swaps the grime and tension of the first for streamlined pacy thrills, and delivers a solid sequel that's thoroughly entertaining. Maybe it's the reduced focus on exploring the central character or the extremely polished nature of its story, that puts it a notch below it's potential, but the mystery still remains engaging enough.

The gore and rush of its final moments totally make up for the predictability of its reveal. It brilliantly connects the dots with the first, and excels at making this feel like a shared universe. There is more focus on developing the villain this time around, and it's works well enough, despite being too much of a textbook psychopath.

Adivi Sesh aces the role, and brings in a character quite different from the first, which is quite fresh and keeps things exciting. It's definitely flawed, but the retained tightness of the script, and breakneck pacing totally work.

A grimy procedural that consistently maintains tension and thrills, with a tight script, top notch music, and solid direction. Sailesh Kolanu manages to create edgy visuals and atmosphere that elevate a derivative and by the books mystery, into something more engaging. This was surprisingly more impressive on a rewatch, and much better than what I ed. Vishwak Sen is genuinely good here, and does so much with his already well written character. Then entire stretch in the forest, pre-climax, is terrifcally shot, with the rain almost adding another layer to the proceedings. The ending decently ties in everything, but the motive is extremely surface level and almost undoes the somewhat impactful aspects. It's still a really good mystery that stands out, thanks to its razor sharp focus and edgy narrative.

A highly experimental genre piece, that's more fascinating than it is flawless. It draws you into its world and characters, even as it feels overstretched and predictable. It's wonderfully layered, detailed and precise in its writing, that leads to some exceptionally staged sequences, like the pre interval confrontation, and the breathtaking single take towards the end, that seamlessly blends dialogue, tension and action.

There's a lot of novelty in the idea and execution, that compels you to think, making for a strangely absorbing drama. Chiyaan Vikram is brilliant throughout, and superbly communicates with his eyes, making for a terrific central performance, that completely carries the film, even in its dullest moments.

The flashback sequence, is a decently engaging portion, but looking at the larger canvas, it's strange, considering how much it reveals about the past, and tames a lot of the mystery building up. It's even more odd considering the Part Two nature of the film, which leaves very little to explore in the prequel. It's interesting to release a film out of chronology, and the effectiveness of this tactic, can only be clear after Part One, but for the way things unfold now, and how complete Part Two feels as its own film, it is quite odd.

It's really hard to fault the film technically however, from the gorgeous looking frames to the rustic direction, and terrific action stretches. There's a lot of effort put into making the film grounded, rural, and almost subtle. Even it's louder mass moments, aren't exactly logic defying or larger than life, there's a constant undercurrent of emotion and rootedness, that continues throughout. It's flawed but fascinating, and sometimes that's a lot more rewarding than something straightforward.

A beautiful ode to life and cinema. Hits the right spot of balancing the cinematic quality and groundedness, much required for a film essentially about filmmaking. Varun Grover's writing ensures the film flows like water, with the transitions in time handled seamlessly. There's so much heart brimming at the core of it, that it's really hard not to be swept away by the story's emotions. Adarsh Gaurav, Shashank Arora, Vineet Singh and everyone else, give authentic and genuine performances that are guaranteed to put a smile on your face. Reema Kagti gorgeously shoots the film with lots of tenderness, elevating an already inspiring and triumphant story of chasing dreams and ions. It's a rare feat of filmmaking that wonderfully aces in all the departments, all of it culminating in a climax that genuinely moved me to tears. This one's for all the cinema lovers, dreamers, and writers out there, and of course, the Letterboxd community.

HIT: The Third Case is a tale of two halves. It starts strong as an investigative thriller, with an intriguing lead, gradually revealing layers of Arjun Sarkar's character, played to perfection by Nani. It is this performance that keeps things afloat, as the film progresses into its second half, which aims at being a single location action thriller, but fails to generate any sense of tension, conflict or impact. The action sequences, despite a decent choreography, feel like an extended video game cutscene, mostly bacause none of it carries any weight. It's highly predictable, there's never a feeling of threat to the lead character, and the villain is utterly generic and boring. The entire investigative build up loses the momentum, due to this tonal shift, that leaves you awkward rather than fulfilled. In essence, there a good story in here somewhere, that could have worked with a more balanced approach to the violent action and investigation aspects, but what remains is a surface level entertainer, that keeps spiralling down, and leaves you with a very neutral feeling, of having watched something, that's barely what it wants to be.

Solid thriller. Fairly basic in plotting and execution, but keeps you engaged nonetheless. Ajay Devgan and Ritesh Deshmukh are good, but it is Saurabh Shukla who absolutely steals the show with his one liners. There's nothing new the film has to offer, and the twists feel redundant after a point, but the central rivalry keeps things afloat. The songs placement is genuinely annoying, and a much tighter edit could have aided the experience. But, totally watchable and enjoyable for what it is.

Freedom, power and beliefs, their inception, growth and intoxication, forms the core of Karthik Subbaraj's leisurely gangster tale, that's ambitious, flawed, and utterly entertaining. There's so much Mahaan wants to say, some ideas are conveyed beautifully, and others barely , but it's undeniable that the film is brimming with thought and intent. Subbaraj's use of light, as it shines filtered through a moving train, onto Dhruv and Chiyaan Vikram's face, is something that left me in awe, and that's just one sequence, in a film filled with so many. Chiyaan Vikram's exceptional performance is an absolute delight to watch, as the man seamlessly switches between emotions. Dhruv Vikram is a surprising new addition, who thoroughly impresses with his unhinged act, and the actual father son bond, adds another delicious layer to the story. It's overlong, unfocused, and very often strays away from its point, but it's so enjoyable that you tend to forgive most of its flaws. Santosh Narayanan's music is exquisite, to say the least, and plays out in beautiful harmony with the editing, and it's such a joy to take in. Mahaan is everything, a gangster drama, a deranged father son flick, an impactful friendship tale and a classy mass movie. The switching is not seamless, but it's completely joyful.

Sleek and fun little thriller, that's enjoyable while it lasts, but barely has any lasting impact. The writing is fairly surface level, despite some interesting creative flourishes in direction, the story remains basic. The third act is extremely generic, and almost undoes the exciting bits of the initial portions. Meghann Fahy is terrific and so is Brandon Skelnar, and their chemistry keeps the film afloat for the most part. It's the perfect example of a one time watch, that es the time, but nothing more.

Tharun Moorthy's Thudarum is a peculiar film, that's at its best when exploring the family dynamics, and the lead character's descent into an unexpected tragedy, but loses its way when it tries to be a commercial film, especially in its final act. There's a lot of brilliance in the way the writing slowly explores Benz's world, his family, the ambassador car, and his past. The patiently unfolding yarn is highly engaging, peaking with the wonderful setup and staging of the pre interval sequence. The entire first half was excellent, and sets the stage for what could have been a deeply personal character driven thriller. But the screenplay diverges completely to give an all out Mohanlal show, that's fairly well done, but in the process loses out on what worked so well in the early portions. The set up is so exceptionally brilliant, that it seems almost tarnished by the extremely simple payoff. Mohanlal is exceptional throughout, and if anything he carries a lot of the film gracefully and with immense charm and energy. All the actors in fact do a wonderful job, but the side characters aren't written with depth, making them fairly surface level. Parallels to nature and forests, is beautifully interwoven into the story, and it is more of that kind of nuanced storytelling that I was expecting all throughout. What we get is still good, but just not quite what the film promises in its first half.

L2: Empuraan is highly ambitious, politically relevant and overloaded with ideas, but it ends up a classic case of "Bigger is not always better". There's a very "lost in translation" feel to the proceedings, that are in no way bad or boring, but always feel like an inferior or less interesting version of what could have been. Also, every other scene had me questioning it's point, since they barely progress the plot, and merely exist because they look "cool". There's definitely no expense spared to make a good looking film, that's extremely large in scale and technically top notch, with some really thrilling action, the scene in the forest was literally and figuratively, absolute fire. Prithviraj's direction is earnest and visioned, but unfortunately it falls flat, with too much going on to care about anything in particular. The seamless cohesion, and story driven thrills of Lucifer are present here only in parts, and that definitely hurts the overall cinematic quality. It's nowhere close to being bad, just underwhelming, considering the absolute potential it had. Also, the set up for Lucifer 3, was completely uninteresting, if anything it made me feel exhausted.

The Day Of The Jackal is a riveting modern update of Fredrick Forsyth's classic novel, that's suspenseful, tense and exciting. Eddie Redmayne is terrific throughout, and completely holds your attention with his performance. There's a searing intensity to the proceedings that builds consistently, and even its weakest portions, retain your engagement. The music is incredibly well utilised, and adds so much personality to the proceedings.

Lashana Lynch's character, Bianca, simply didn't work for me, despite the effort put into developing her. There was something irritable and unlikable about her presence, causing the central conflict to feel quite one sided. They were clearly building up the distant rivalry of these characters, but the impact is barely felt, and when they eventually do face off, it doesn't feel warranted or interesting. A significantly different character could have probably made a bigger impact.

The series feels a tad bid too long, and about eight or nine episodes, could have done the trick, but despite these issues, The Day Of The Jackal stays strong, thanks to the tight writing, terrific direction and neat visual language. It's highly binge worthy and entertaining, making for a thriller well worth your time.

Heartbreaking cinema. Pain devestatingly seeps through the screen, in this deeply personal revenge thriller that profoundly comments on spirituality, retribution and redemption. Tony Scott's signature flourishes add a high level of tension and haze, that almost lends into the unnerving aspects of the film. Denzel Washington is masterful in his portrayal, a perfect concoction of brutal and sensitive. Dakota Fanning impresses with a thoroughly heartfelt and impactful child performance, that's right among the best. It's highly formulaic, but the patient character development and sensitive direction won me over, in what is Tony Scott's most mature, nuanced and aesthetically impactful films ever. A pure cinematic gem.

An utterly ridiculous and hyperviolent action comedy that makes economic use of the closed confines of a plane, to deliver some fun and well choreographed action, but totally loses plot as it goes and ends up a forgettable ride, especially considering how strong its initial set up is. Josh Harnett is perfect and the violence is cartoonishly over the top, but is that enough to make something good? That's totally up to you to answer.

A powerful, rousing and engaging period courtroom drama that's neatly written, brilliantly performed and highly impactful. Akshay Kumar is exceptional as Sankaran Nair, and he perfectly channelises the pain and anger of an event as devastating as the Jallianwala Bhag massacre. R Madhavan is terrific, and the interplay between these two characters in the courtroom is quite exciting to watch. Credit where it's due, Ananya Pandey holds up quite well in her role, and delivers a decent performance. The screenplay weaves in the commercial moments seamlessly, and the thundering score definitely helps. It could have used a bit more polish in the script, and the story feels rushed in certain places, but never hinders the pace or the impact. Kesari 2 is hard hitting and thoroughly engaging, further elevated by an incredible central performance.

Ryan Coogler's horror drama is a patient, thrilling and thoughtful odyssey about community, identity, power and art. It's densely plotted and filled with well written characters, that are wonderfully knit into the story. The performances are magnificent and the action is quite violent and thrilling. Coogler's clear vision and conviction to tell an original yet ambitious story, definitely translates, but the story did not work for me on the level it is for others. I don't quite have any specific complaints, but I wasn't always on the wavelength of the film. It's respectable, well made and original, and that in itself warrants a theatrical watch.

A neat, thoughtful and thoroughly entertaining drama, that brilliantly deconstructs genre tropes, and presents a poignant tale of failure, hard work and redemption. It's consistently engaging, thanks to a wonderfully written lead character, performed excellently by Pradeep Ranganathan. It delivers a strong message without ever being preachy or repetitive, something quite fresh in the commercial space. Also, the side characters are given a good amount of personality and attention making them quite memorable. There are certain logical gaps, and sometimes it leans a bit too much into the message, but none of it matters, because what it achieves is much more, especially for commercial cinema.

Cocktail is a highly underrated bollywood romance that strikes a chord, especially with it's well written characters, neat writing and wonderful music. Sure, it has all the cliches of a typical love triangle, but the execution is fresh and engaging. Deepika Padukone is terrific all the way through, and some of the best scenes in the movie, are hers. Saif Ali Khan brings his usual charm and quirkiness to the character, and Dimple Kapadia gives a good performance too. Gautham and Meera's romance could have been more organic and the resolution needed a bit more depth, but nonetheless Cocktail works as a mainstream entertainer, with a strong emotionally resonant core.

The Amateur, for the lack of a less obvious word, is amateurish at best. Everything from the utterly generic writing to the uninspired direction, kept me completely disengaged from the characters or events, to a point where I was contemplating leaving the theatre midway. It's overly serious and dramatic, and barely even attempts at maintaining consistency in tone, plotting or editing. It sure doesn't help that there's a great cast in here, that constantly remind you of the much superior films they were in. The action's terrible too, with barely any energy or flavour to it. I truly have no idea what they were going for here. Rami Malek's jawline was sharper than the script, and by a good amount.

Competent filmmaking, terrific sound design and great performances, elevate this tightly knit survival thriller, that achieves what it sets out to do, despite having underwritten characters, awkward dialogues, and mediocre editing. The camerawork in the underwater sequences is simply stellar, successfully achieving a claustrophobic atmosphere that aids in ramping up the tension and thrills. Could've been a lot more, but for what it is, still an enjoyable, nerve wracking thriller.

An old fashioned spy drama, that's measured and precise, much like it's cold yet engaging protagonist. On one level, it's about deception, lies and treachery, on another, about loyalty, love and trust. These contradicting yet analogous themes reflect in almost every scene, character and word of dialogue spoken leading to something more compelling than what's on the surface.

Steven Soderberg adds tons of style and slickness into the proceedings and David Koepp's writing is excellently detailed, and tight. Michael Fassbender perfectly embodies a classic John Le Carre protagonist, and Cate Blanchett is as good as she's ever been. Pierce Brosnan shines despite his limited screen time, and watching him in a spy drama, elicits some memories, to say the least.

The Black Bag may not be your usual spy flick with large scale action and stakes, but as an intimate character driven whodunnit, it's got more than a few tricks up its sleeve to keep you engaged.

In a scene early on, Cate Blanchett's Kathryn asks Michael Fassbender's George,

"What's on the menu?"
"Fun and Games", he replies.

Fun and games. That's exactly what it was for me.

There's a great story to be told here, and an even greater message to be conveyed, but the amateurish writing, artificially engineered proceedings, and an overly dramatic execution waters down the narrative. The screenplay maintains momentum, but the arguments feel superficial and surface level.

There's a much deeper and relevant conversation that needs to be had here, and the film barely dvelves beyond what's on the surface. There are a few hard hitting moments, but none that leave an overall impact.

On the positive side, the emotional core of it works decently well, the performances are good and most of it remains fairly watchable. But it's the potential that the story holds, that's left me underwhelmed. It's earnest for sure, and that in itself warrants for a watch, but it's a classic case commericializing a highly important and relevant story to render it mainstream.

Bill Skarsgard's stellar central performance and an interesting concept aren't quite enough to salvage this meddling thriller that unfolds almost like a sine wave. For every exciting, thrilling or interesting sequence there's a highly generic, bland or dull one, almost as if to balance it out. The villain did not work for me at all, and sadly enough Anthony Hopkin's performance barely left any impact. It has a lead character that you instantly care for, and it's blatant stupidity can be quite fun at times, but it ends up much less than what it could have been.

A highly enjoyable genre picture, with a compelling world, an interesting lead and relevant satire. Bong Joon Ho seemlessly blends dark humor into a somewhat absurd science fiction story, that's genuinely funny and aesthetically pleasing. Robert Pattinson is great as Mickey 17 and 18, bringing in his usual charm to the performance. It's also refreshing and unique to see simple, personal and fairly light hearted stories in huge sci-fi worlds. It could have been much shorter, focused and with more subtext, but what is, is still quite entertaining and poignant.

The Brutalist achieves stunning cinematography, thought provoking themes and great performances, but loses its steam in the second half, leading to a film much less than the insane hype built around it. The first half displays excellent storytelling, that's transportative, investing and genuinely brilliant, but post intermission, things unfold at a snail like pace, with almost not much of a point, and the ending barely resonates, despite an effort to say something unique. The film is quite like architecture, aesthetically magnificent, respectable, and grand, but ultimately hollow the more you look for.

Extremely campy, unbelievably silly and somewhat problematic, yet filled with so much heart and sweetness that it won me over.

It's constantly entertaining thanks to Akshay Kumar in peak form, delivering one liners with such comedic perfection, that's almost rare to see in Bollywood these days. John Abhram is fun, and so are the rest of the cast.

There are multiple instances which have no continuity, logic or even consistent character writing but it's endearing to see something like that. It's definitely dumb fun, but quite an entertaining one at that.

Also the songs are all bangers! Too good an album! 🔥

A wafer thin story, salvaged by the broad action antics, relevant commentary and terrific Ayushman and Jaideep, completely in sync with each other. The editing and techno music inject so much energy into the proceedings, elevating the excitement of the already well choreographed action sequences. It's fairly basic in its plotting, and aims at maximising the cinematic presentation, almost at the cost of subtlety and emotion, but sometimes that's all an action dramedy needs to be. Highly effective in its thrills and build up that most of its flaws can be forgotten. Genuinely regretting not watching this one earlier.

Pratik Gandhi and Yami Gautham elevate this comedy of errors that's fairly basic in its story and ideas, but the execution ensures entertainment, at least while it lasts. There's nothing new or fresh here, but what works is the central chemistry between two polar opposite characters, and it is quite fun to see them interact and fall in love. The humor works to a certain extent and the film is fairly well shot, but the predictable screenplay and monotonous proceedings, keep it from being a better action comedy. Nevertheless, it's decent for a one time watch, and perfectly fits into the time category.
