Promise of August

Last night, after months of anticipation I travelled all the way down to London to the Prince Charles Cinema to see the UK premiere of Third Window Films' new restorations of two of my all-time favourite films Shark Skin Man & Peach Hip Girl and Party 7 by one of my favourite filmmakers, Katsuhito Ishii who was attending and doing a live Q&A and meeting fans! It was an honour to get a photo and talk with the man who created…

”Could you give us some of your political beliefs?”

“Kill everyone now! Condone first-degree murder! Advocate cannibalism! Eat shit!”

BEHOLD! THE FILTHIEST FILM ALIVE!

Seeing this with a pretty animated cinema audience who were roaring with laughter, gasps, swears, and some gagging here and there just completely made the best viewing experience of this film you could get. Even 50 years later, John Water’s Pink Flamingos still holds up as being a true, proud ‘EXERCISE IN POOR TASTE’. It’s sleazy…

Absolutely garbage. I hate to bash films like this, but this was genuinely painful to get through. The Weeknd desperately wants to make things that are seen as “weird” and “different”, but it never works because his ego is too big to commit. Just an excruciatingly dull, pitifully shallow, seemingly never-ending, and unlikeable ego-trip for the Weeknd that tricks itself into thinking it's a lot more meaningful than it actually is. The only effect it had was making me cringe in my seat due to second-hand embarrassment. Easily one of the most miserable cinema experiences I've ever had.

Until Dawn

Rewatched

Outside of some really fun, gooey kills, there’s depressingly almost nothing interesting to Until Dawn. One of those weird film adaptations that tries so hard to be different from the game that it ends up leaving existing fans disappointed, while doing absolutely nothing new to excite a general audience. An uninspired, half-hearted, and ugly looking slasher with no natural rhythm to it at all. Just a seemingly endless loop of nonsense led by forgettable characters. I’ve seen this twice now and both times I’ve forgotten I’ve watched it by the end of the day.

"Summer was ending... Already, everything was just memories, remaining memories."

I knew from the second this film started I was going to love it. Love at Sea is one of my favourite types of films that focus on bringing together smaller fragments of life in a montage-like fashion that captures the exact look and feel of being lost in a memory. Where every moment, every line, looks and sounds so beautiful independently and yet still builds slowly into a perfectly…

Quiet, slow, poignant, beautiful. Sometimes the simplest of films are the most powerful.
