If you ever feel down or lonely and need to watch something that can cheer you up, please consider Kamome Diner to do the work. I mean, I wasn't in need of cheering this morning, but I felt my spirit being lifted up a couple of notches by the end of this movie. It has the right amount of quirk, humor, and charm to make your day. To put it simply, it's a perfect example of a comfort movie.

Telling this story in first-person perspective is a daring choice, and I gotta say the final result is so rewarding. This is such an immersive, visually stunning mood piece.

Just when I thought it would take an obvious route (by revealing the increasingly paranoid main character as the actual culprit), this movie zigged, showing us that big-ass bird and be like... surprise! It's actually a creature feature dressed in a psychological thriller's clothing. That was kind of funny and I honestly didn't know how to feel at first, but, the more I thought about it, the more I liked this wild approach. Also, the practical effects on the bird looks so freakin' good.

So glad that I've finally watched this movie in its entirety. Even after more than a decade, this movie still holds up pretty well. Filled with nostalgic elements and nods to cinema lovers, this energetic and hilarious movie is an important part of modern Indonesian cinema.
