Ich habe den Roman „Dune“ von Autor „Frank Herbert“ nie gelesen und die Sichtung der ersten Verfilmung des Stoffes von „David Lynch“ aus dem Jahr 1984 liegt schon sehr lange zurück., So lange, dass ich mich nicht mehr an diesen Film erinnern kann. Als bekannt wurde, dass Regisseur Denis Villeneuve sich einen Traum erfüllt und den Stoff neu adaptieren würde, war ich gespannt, auf diese Adaption, denn „Denis Villeneuve“ hat ja bekanntlich schon so einiges abgeliefert
„Dune Part One“ war für mich das Kinoereignis 2021. Ich hatte die Gelegenheit den Film in „IMAX“ zu sehen, was einen zusätzlichen Impact hatte. Es war zu diesem Zeitpunkt ungewiss, ob es einen zweiten Teil geben würde, aber durch den finanziellen Erfolg gab man Seitens „Warner Brothers“ grünes Licht für die Realisierung des zweiten Teils, den wir nach einigen Verschiebungen jetzt endlich im Kino bestaunen dürfen. Ich war gehypte und so begab ich mich gestern Abend in ein „Double Feature“. Der Kinosaal war bis auf den letzten Platz gefüllt und man merkte, dass das Publikum richtig Lust hatte zum Wüstenplaneten zu reisen.

„Dune Part One“ hatte den perfekten Endpunkt. „Das ist erst der Anfang“ sagt Chani zu Paul am Ende des ersten Teils und sie hat recht, denn Part One war quasi nur eine Einführung in eine fantastische Welt und ein in Stellung bringen von Figuren. „Dune Part Two“ setzt nun nahtlos an die Ereignisse des ersten Teils an. Paul und seine Mutter finden Unterschlupf bei den Fremen und lernen die Sitten und Gebräuche des Wüsten Folkes kennen. Gleichzeitig breitet sich der Kult um Paul weiter aus, denn das Volk der Fremen sieht in Ihm zumindest in Teilen den neuen Muslijas der sie in die Zukunft führen wird. So könnte Paul auch eine ernstzunehmende Gefahr für den herrschenden Imperator werden.

„Dune Part Two“ ist in allen Belangen größer als Teil 1. Er ist audiovisuell ein absolutes Brett- Dieser Film ist für die Leinwand gemacht. Sucht Euch bitte die größte Leinwand, die Ihr finden könnt und gebt Euch „Dune Part Two“. Denn was brachialeres werdet Ihr dieses Jahr wohl nicht mehr im Kino sehen können. Die Figuren, die Bilder, der Sound, dass alles ist absolut überwältigend. Man kann es kaum beschreiben, es muss erlebt werden. Da ich die Buchvorlage nicht kenne, kann ich nicht beurteilen, inwieweit man sich hier am Buch orientiert hat oder was geändert wurde. Fakt ist aber, dass beide Filme für sich selbst stehen können und man auch ohne Kenntnis der Romanvorlage problemlos folgen kann.

Denis Villeneuve geht hier absolut „All in“ dies stellt natürlich ein gewisses Wagnis da, was auch aus meiner Sicht leider nicht ganz aufgeht. Die Handlung wirkte auf mich stellenweise sprunghaft. Im ersten Teil nahm man sich die Zeit uns in die Welt von Dune einzuführen und Ihre Figuren vorzustellen. Im zweiten Teil werden Entwicklungen von bereits bekannten Figuren zu schnell vollzogen. Neue Figuren, wie zum Beispiel der Imperator, der hier von Christopher Walken gespielt wird, einem absoluten Charakterschauspieler, der diese Figur hätte großartig ausfüllen können, sind lediglich Randfiguren. Gerade hinten raus wirkt alles gehetzt und die Ereignisse überschlagen sich. Der Film ist Überfrachtet mit Material und es wäre die bessere Entscheidung gewesen aus all dem, was wir jetzt in „Dune Part Two“ sehen, zwei Filme zu machen. Diese Entscheidung hätte dem Film den Raum gegeben, den er nicht nur gebraucht, sondern auch verdient hätte.

„Dune“ von „Denis Villeneuve“ ist trotz seiner Probleme im zweiten Teil ein zeitloses Science-Fiction Meisterwerk, welches neue Maßstäbe im Kino und im Genre setzt, unbedingt sehenswert.

“Dune Part One” had the perfect ending. “This is just the beginning,” Chani says to Paul at the end of the first part and she is right, because Part One was basically just an introduction to a fantastic world and a positioning of characters. “Dune Part Two” now continues seamlessly from the events of the first part. Paul and his mother find shelter with the Fremen and learn about the customs and customs of the desert folk. At the same time, the cult of Paul continues to spread, because the Fremen people see him, at least in part, as the new Muslijas who will lead them into the future. Paul could also become a serious threat to the ruling emperor.

“Dune Part Two” is bigger than Part 1 in all respects. Audio-visually it is an absolute stunner. This film is made for the screen. Please find the biggest screen you can find and give yourself “Dune Part Two”. Because you probably won't be able to see anything more brutal in the cinema this year. The characters, the images, the sound, everything is absolutely overwhelming. It can hardly be described, it has to be experienced. Since I don't know the original book, I can't judge to what extent the book has been based on this or what has been changed. But the fact is that both films can stand on their own and you can easily follow them even without knowing the original novel.

Denis Villeneuve is absolutely “all in” here, which of course represents a certain risk, which unfortunately doesn’t quite work out in my opinion. The plot seemed jumpy to me at times. In the first part they took the time to introduce us to the world of Dune and introduce your characters. In the second part, developments of already known characters are carried out too quickly. New characters, such as the Emperor, played here by Christopher Walken, an absolute character actor who could have filled this character brilliantly, are merely peripheral characters. Especially at the back, everything seems rushed and events are happening fast. The film is overloaded with material and it would have been a better decision to make two films out of everything we now see in “Dune Part Two”. This decision would have given the film the space it not only needed, but also deserved.

Despite its problems in the second part, “Dune” by “Denis Villeneuve” is a timeless science fiction masterpiece that sets new standards in cinema and the genre and is definitely worth seeing.
