terrifying. make everything quiet, but make the quiet loud. immaculate tension building in every little noise, in every shot that doesn't reveal, the stillness, the sense of omnipresent supernatural danger... this film evokes such a pertinent feeling of dread and fear and paranoia. the payoff at the end is absolutely perfect. i cannot imagine seeing this in a theater when it was released. i may have straight up ed away.

favorite part of this film is james stewart, lawyer at law, submitting a small dog as evidence and prompting its inclusion with "will the deputy bring in the dog, please."
