Hard to reckon how classically “pretentious” I find this (ie, a very stupid movie that postures as a very smart one) with how much fun I have watching it. Despite the absent texture of the original film, there is still a pulpy appeal to this — its oppressively sterile locales, its post-expressionist production design, its menagerie of freaks and fascists performed marvelously by a revolving door of character actors and bit players.
