]]>Rewatching this for the nth time took me back to 00’s internet with its speculation-filled LOST forums (is it connected to the Dharma Initiative?), ARGs (yes!! It sort of is!!) teaser/poster analysis (you can see his face in the clouds!!) and Clovie lore (he’s just a little baby!!) which had me more hyped than I’ve ever been for this film to come out and pore over for years afterwards.
Then LOST concluded and the Cloverfield franchise went down the toilet (after 10 Cloverfield Lane) and honestly everything’s been terrible ever since.
This film is absolute perfection. Bury me with it under a collapsed bridge.

]]>Thank you for the recc @charlotte89, this was incredible.
I put off watching this for so long, as I had gotten it confused with a dramatisation of a totally different, also very upsetting rape case that I didn’t feel up to watching.
The first episode is a difficult and frustrating watch, but when Toni Collette and Merritt Weaver’s characters take the reins, you feel like you’re finally in competent hands. It’s a clever transition.
I know it’s lazy to do the whole “it’s like a feminist [insert male dominated show] but the best way I can think to describe this is the polar opposite of Mindhunter. Instead of simping over serial killers this show focusses totally on the victims. The rapist, once identified, is an afterthought, and really rather boring to the point where the show (when it finally allows him to say his piece) cuts him off mid-sentence. Instead of two male leads, one of whom is robotically selfish and irritating, we have two methodical and emotionally intelligent female detectives just …getting on with it.
After much deliberation, I find Unbelievable to be better than Mindhunter! *bangs gavel*

The first act is very dystopian YA with its reckless lovestruck protagonists …except it’s a bit of a cringy slog because they’re old ass adults.
The second act RULES with its set and creature design hitting all the right beats:
✅ Annihilation
✅ Resident Evil
✅ The Legend of Zelda: Ocarina of Time (???)
The third act is fine. A decent gig for Sigourney Weaver.
(✅ Cabin in the Woods)
Overall it’s a bit silly and goes far too hard on the CGI BUT it’s original (apart from all the things it copies), it’s fun, and that’s fine by me.

]]>Finally, a BBC adaptation of a woman-authored Christmas ghost story!
Doesn’t exactly the Bechdel test, contains mostly dialogue from stuffy English men, and the put-upon main female character is murdered. Even the author’s IRL husband is a prick. But still, Girl Power!

]]>ENOUGH with these sympathetic, sexualised, adoring takes on this pathetic little shit and all the men who think like him.
There’s a delicate balance to be struck when sensitively creating dramatisations of true crime and I have no patience for the ones that so overtly glorify who are almost always mediocre men in real life, while sidelining their victims as props or worse, having the offender describe them (young women, once full of potential and personalities and complexities) as sex objects.
This pointless film has nothing to add to the discussion of criminal psychology or the epidemic of violence against women and girls, and is an insult to the victims and their families.
