Emery Unsworth’s review published on Letterboxd:
I don't think there was a single shot in this movie I found memorable, for a movie like Dune, the scale should be massive, so why is every single shot in this movie a shallow focus, and when there is a wide shot it lasts 2 seconds? I know Greig Fraser is a brilliant cinematographer but you can only have great cinematography with great direction and Denis didn't do it for me this time around, especially with the editing, oh my lord, this movie has so many fast cuts it hurts my head, not for a moment am I able to absorb this world that was set up so beutifully in the first movie, like the foundation buiIt by the first film is so stong and was so masterfully done, all they had to do was execute that, not to mention the sometimes horrendous dialogue and what seems to be mcu humor at times that I coudn't help but cringe at. Another huge problem I have with this film is the characters, and for the most part, I'm talking about Zendaya's character, her character is so fucking shallow that it brings this film down so much for me, and the people saying Austin Butler deserves an Oscar for his role are out of their minds, bro had like 5 mins of screen time. Going back to what I said about the scale of the film, which I find to be very underwhelming, especially when the big fight scenes happen, which ended up being a ton of super boring shots with loud music, like ITS FUCKING DUNE PLEASE GIVE ME ONE WIDE ANGLE TO SHOW THE SCALE OF THE FIGHT, which again lasted like 10 minutes btw. This film suffers from being too short, it needs around an hour or two to fully grasp its scale and story, that being said I really enjoyed my time watching it and everything else was great, I know im bashing the film alot but thats only becuase ive only heard amazing things about it so id thought id give some of my own opinions on the film.
