This review may contain spoilers.

SPOILERS! SPOILERS! SPOILERS! SPOILERS!

The film follows Eve (Ana de Armas), a member of the Ruska Roma, as she goes rogue from the people who took her in to exact revenge against the man who killed her father.

Although not as strong as the John Wick films, Ballerina is an entertaining and well written tale of revenge. The first half of the film drags as we’re introduced to the character of Eve and watch her learn how to be an assassin under the people that took her in. It is engaging watching this, but it is slow. The second half where Eve goes after the cult of assassins that killed her father is great and has lots of funs sequences.

It is also interesting seeing the world of John Wick being expanded like this, especially the Ruska Romas being explored more. A subplot involving Lena (Catalina Sandino Moreno) being the long-lost sister of Eve didn’t add much to the plot. The Chancellor (Gabriel Byrne), the film’s antagonist, is decently explored and makes for an effective villain.

Ana de Armas delivers a strong performance as Eve. The scene where she barely gets through her first mission is a highlight. Gabriel Byrne is well cast as the Chancellor. Anjelica Huston, Lance Reddick, Norman Reedus, Catalina Sandino Moreno, Ian McShane, Keanu Reeves, Sharon Duncan-Brewster, Ava McCarthy, and David Castañeda provide very good .

The action isn’t as memorable as the other films in this universe but there still are some awesome and brilliantly films scenes. A couple of highlights include Eve’s first mission and the flamethrower gun fight (Easily a strong contender for scene of the year for me).

Final thought: A entertaining revenge action film.

Going through some Criterions I own but haven’t seen yet!

Wanda follows the titular Wanda (Barbara Loden), an aimless woman as she wanders around by herself in Pennsylvania and eventually meeting bank robber Mr. Dennis (Michael Higgins).

Wanda is a naturalistic and deeply felt portrait of mental illness and how society viewed women at the time. It’s a breezy watch and has an interesting narrative which feels less traditionally structured and more like a fly on a wall watching this woman who doesn’t feel like she fits in anywhere wander from person to person. Wanda is such a thoughtfully captured protagonist and the dynamic between her, and Mr. Dennis is so tragic yet well captured. The ending, especially the final shot is devastating and incredibly thought-provoking.

Barbara Loden delivers an amazing performance as Wanda. The scene where she watches from the street as Mr. Dennis is killed by the police is a highlight. Michael Higgins is also fantastic as the abusive Mr. Dennis. Frank Jourdano, Valerie Manches, Dorothy Shupenes, Peter Shupenes, Jerome Their, Marian Their, Anthony Rotell, and M. L. Kennedy provide very good .

The natural, almost documentary feel to this film really highlights the hopelessness that the character feels and makes the film feel like it’s a time capsule of that period of time.

Final thought: A poignant and stunningly shot drama with excellent performances. Well worth a watch if you haven’t seen it before.

Was looking for a horror to watch and saw this was on Netflix so decided to give it a go!

Inspired by the life of exorcist Father Gabriele Amorth (Played by Russell Crowe), the film depicts his attempts to help a family who have just moved into an old Spanish abbey where an evil entity has latched onto the youngest child.

Although it doesn’t add much to the possession/ supernatural subgenre, The Pope’s Exorcist manages to be a compelling horror film. The story is very predictable but told well and is decently paced. A couple of aspects of the story that were interesting and well explored was the backstory involving the Church and the abbey and the demon using Amorth’s and fellow priest Father Esquibel’s (Daniel Zovatto) guilt of past actions against them. The ending, though very obvious, is still well executed and is a good ending for the film.

Russell Crow delivers a very good performance as Amorth. Daniel Zovatto is well cast as Esquibel. Franco Nero is a little underused but still puts in a decent performance as the Pope. Alex Essoe, Peter DeSouza-Feighoney, and Laurel Marsden all do great work as the family Amorth and Esquibel help. River Hawkins, Cornell John, Ryan O’Grady, Carrie Munroe, and Bianca Bardoe provide strong .

Visually the filmmakers do a great job of instilling the film with this uneasy atmosphere and not relying completely on jump scares. A couple of highlights include the sequence where Amorth and Esquibel discover the history behind the abbey and the final exorcism.

Final thought: A pretty solid and entertaining possession film.

Been wanting to watch this for a while and got it on Criterion Collection for Christmas last year and tonight had time to finally watch it. The Criterion Collection has three cuts (First, Theatrical and Extended) but I wanted to start with the Theatrical.

The film depicts the found of the first settlements in Virginia in 1607 and the relationships between Captain John Smith, Pocahontas, and John Rolfe (Colin Farrell, Q’orianka Kilcher, and Christian Bale respectively)>

The fourth film by Terrence Malick is a wonderfully captured portrait of love, hope and life. It may suffer a lot from pacing, but the story and characters are so compelling and thoughtfully written. An aspect that is especially well explored is the relationship between the two cultures and how this sort of love triangle formed from it. The ending is incredibly powerful and ends the film on this very poignant note.

Colin Farrell delivers one of the best performances of his career as John Smith. Q’orianka Kilcher is also fantastic as Pocahontas. Christian Bale is excellent as John Rolfe. Christian Plummer, August Schellenberg, Wes Studi, David Thewlis, Yorick van Wageningen, Ben Mendelsohn, Raoul Trujillo, Brian F. O’Byrne, Irene Bedard, John Savage, Jamie Harris, Alex Rice, Janine Duvitski, Thomas Clair, Michael Greyeyes, Kalani Queypo, Noah Taylor, Ben Chaplin, Eddie Marsan, Billy Merasty, Roger Rees, Jonathan Pryce, and Alexandra W. B Malick provide great .

Visually the film is stunning with cinematographer Emmanuel Lubezki making excellent use of natural light to create such reflective imagery. A highlight is the sequence where Pocahontas visits her father Chief Powhatan (Schellenberg) who banishes her from the tribe.

Final thought: Possibly my new favourite Malick film (Or at least tied with The Tree of Life). If you want to see me check out the other cuts soon lemme know!

The film follows Zsa-zsa Korda (Benicio del Toro), a business tycoon, as he reunites with his daughter Liesl (Mia Threapleton) as they rush to prevent a plan that will cripple Korda’s greatest plan.

Wes Anderson’s latest is a funny, breezy espionage comedy about family and legacy. The story, though very predictable in places, is well told and entertaining from beginning to end. It also has a strange but compelling father-daughter dynamic between Zsa-zsa and Lisel that is well explored. Its conclusion feels a little rushed but still works as a satisfying finale.

Benicio del Toro delivers a witty performance as Zsa-zsa. Mia Threapleton steals scenes as Liesel. Michael Cera is on great form as Bjorn, an associate Zsa-zsa hires on their mission. Riz Ahmed, Tom Hanks, Bryan Cranston, Mathieu Amalric, Richard Ayoade, Jeffrey Wright, Scarlett Johansson, Benedict Cumberbatch, Rupert Friend, Hope Davis, Bill Murray, Charlotte Gainsbourg, Willem Dafoe, F. Murray Abraham, Stephen Park, Alex Jennings, Jason Watkins, Donald Sumpter, and Scott Shepherd provide very good .

Visually the film looks so unique and interesting, and a great deal of time and effort went into making it feel like a spy film from the sixties. Alexandre Desplat’s score is lovely and again adds to the feeling that it’s an old spy film.

Final thought: A delightful and wonderfully shot comedy with great performances

The film follows two sisters named Lilo and Nani (Maia Kealoha and Sydney Elizebeth Agudong respectively) as they adopt a dog named Stitch…Only Stitch is actually a genetically engineered Alien in hiding.

For the most part, this is a fun and well-made remake. It is entertaining and, despite a few silly changes from the original, is well told. A big change to a certain character is interesting but not really explored enough so it just feels like a wasted potential. There’s also a lot of heart in it, especially in the way the relationship between the two sisters is explored. The second half is where it starts to come undone and builds to a poorly executed and very rushed finale.

Maia Kealoha makes a very good Lilo. Sydney Agudong is terrific as her older sister Nani. Zach Galifianakis and Billy Magnussen deliver fun performances as Jumba and Pleakley. Courtney B. Vance feels very wasted as Bubbles. Kaipo Dudoit, Tia Carrere, Amy Hill, and Hannah Waddingham feel underused but still provide decent as David, Mrs Kekoa, Tūtū, and Grand Councilwoman respectively.

Visually the film isn’t all that remarkable apart from a couple of fun sequences like Stitch and Lilo hiding from Jumba in the house.

Final thought: It’s a fine remake but not all that able.

It’s been years since I’ve seen this but since I may be seeing the remake in the next couple of days, I decided to give the original a rewatch (And potential the sequel because I haven’t seen it before?).

The film follows two sisters as they adopt a dog named Stitch…Only Stitch is actually a genetically engineered Alien who is wanted by an intergalactic federation.

What a delight to revisit this film again. The story, though a bit predictable, holds up as a fun, sweet film about family and accepting their flaws. It is well written, especially the relationship between both sisters Lil and Nani (Daveigh Chase and Tia Carrere respectively). Another thing that really stood out on rewatch is how well the culture of the setting (Hawaii) is explored such as the concept of Ohana. The ending is emotionally satisfying and well executed.

The voice cast are all fantastic and well suited to their roles. Visually the film holds up really well with gorgeous animation and clever worldbuilding. A highlight is the montage where Nani takes Lilo and Stitch to look for jobs. Alan Silvestri’s score is also fantastic and perfectly hits the emotional beats of the story.

Final thought: Sweet and full of charm.

The film follows Ethan Hunt (Tom Cruise) and his team as they race against time to stop the Entity from destroying the world.

While it is definitely not the best in the franchise Hey it’s really hard to beat Ghost Protocol and Fallout, okay?), The Final Reckoning is still an entertaining and strong finale. The story suffers a lot from pacing but is still very compelling and well told. It was also cool to see certain story beats and characters from earlier films feature, especially the Rabbits Foot from MI: 3. Gabriel (Esai Morales) as an antagonist could have been explored more, particularly the idea that the Entity has abandoned him, but he still feels a bit one-dimensional. The ending is a bit predictable but still well executed and is a satisfying conclusion for the film and franchise.

Tom Cruise delivers a strong performance as Ethan. Hayley Atwell, Simon Pegg, Ving Rhames, Greg Tarzan Davis, and Pom Klementieff are all terrific as Ethan’s friends and team. Esai Morales is on very good form as Gabriel. Henry Czerny, Angela Bassett, Holt McCallany, Janet McTeer, Nick Offerman, Hannah Waddingham, Tramell Tillman, Shea Whigham, Charles Parnell, Mark Gatiss, Rolf Saxon, Lucy Tulugarjuk, Katy O’Brian, Stephen Oyoung and Pasha D. The film has some very tense and cleverly film sequences. A couple of highlights include the near dialogue free sequence where Ethan dives to a submarine and the finale where Ethan battles Gabriel on planes.

Loved the first two and didn’t get a chance to see the third when it came out last year and since it’s my birthday today, I decided to put this on!

The film follows the titular bear (Voiced by Ben Whishaw) as he and the Brown family travel to Peru to locate his missing Aunt Lucy.

While maybe not as strong as the previous two, Paddington in Peru is a charming and fun adventure that retains what made the first two so memorable while being its own thing. The story, though very predictable, is well told with a lot of humour and sincerity. A side plot involving a boat captain’s (Antonio Banderas) desire for gold is well explored and has a nicely executed conclusion. The ending, as obvious as it is, is a satisfying conclusion for the story.

Ben Whishaw continues to be a delight as the voice of Paddington. Hugh Bonneville, Emily Mortimer (Replacing Sally Hawkins), Madeleine Harris, and Samuel Joslin are all very good as the of the Brown family that adopted Paddington. Olivia Colman is terrific as the Reverend Mother who is hiding a secret. Antonio Banderas and Carla Tous are well cast as ship captain Hunter and his daughter Gina respectively. Julie Walters is hilarious as Mrs Bird. Imelda Staunton, Joel Fry, Robbie Gee, Sanjeev Bhaskar, Ben Miller, Jessica Hynes, Hayley Atwell, Aloreia Spencer, Simon Farnaby, and Ella Bruccoleri provide decent .

Visually the film feels like a wonderful homage to old adventure films like Raiders of the Lost Ark and Jungle Book. A highlight would be Paddington being chased by Hunter on top of the fort.

Final thought: A delightful adventure film.

So excited to see this one because I was surprised by how much I enjoyed the first three.

The film is set in 1988 and follows a masked killer who is targeting the prom queen candidates of the Shadyside High prom night,

While it isn’t as memorable as the some of the previous films, Prom Queen is a pretty solid slasher film that continues the franchise in an interesting way. The story is very predictable, especially the reveal about who the killer is, but it manages to be compelling and tense. Characters, especially protagonist Lori and her best friend Megan (Played by India Fowler and Suzanna Son respectively), are well captured. Lori and Megan have an engaging “Outside the popular circles” dynamic which is well explored.

India Fowler is on great form as Lori. Suzanna Son steals scenes as Megan. Fina Strazza is well cast as Tiffany, Lori’s rival for the Prom Queen. Chris Klein and Katherine Waterston both deliver strong performances as Tiffany’s parents Dan and Nancy. David Iacono, Ella Rubin, Ariana Greenblatt, Lili Taylor, Darrin Baker, Rebecca Ablack, Llan O’Driscoll, Damian Romero, Dakota Taylor, Ryan Rosery, Cecilia Lee, Joseph Chiu, Dale Whibley, Christopher B. MacCabe, and Joanne Boland provide very good .

Visually the filmmakers do a decent job with building the suspense with some creepy sequences. A couple of highlights include the scene where two characters sneak off to a classroom and the finale.

Hurry Up Tomorrow follows music superstar Abel (Abel Tesfaye) who, while in the middle on an incredibly overwhelming time in his life, meets a mysterious fan named Anima (Jenna Ortega) who exposes some harsh truths to him.

Hurry Up Tomorrow has an interesting premise but lacks the execution. The story could have been so compelling, especially the metaness of it, but it just doesn’t go far enough with exploring it and it just doesn’t go anywhere interesting. It also drags so much with every scene seem to just go on and go before finally something happens. Characters aren’t written well and the central dynamic between Abel and Anima which should have been driving the film isn’t explored that well. The ending also just happens, and it feels very anticlimactic.

Abel Tesfaye is on decent form as the film’s version of himself. The scene where he records a foul-mouthed rant at his ex-girlfriend is a highlight. Jenna Ortega steals scenes as Anima, especially in the sequence where she dances and analysis Abel’s songs to him. Barry Keoghan gives very good as Lee, Abel’s manager, and close friend.

Visually the film looks great with the eerie and surreal imagery that really shows Abel’s mindset. A highlight is the sequence where Abel is knocked out and has a nightmare where he walks through an empty hotel and streets before encountering his childhood self.

Final thought: Sadly, despite the talent, this is a vanity project with very little substance.

Spoilers! Spoilers! Spoilers! Spoilers!

My Final Destinationathon concludes (At least for now) with the recently released 6/ Bloodlines. I’ve been hearing some really good things about this film so was really excited to see it.

The film follows Stefani (Kaitlyn Santa Juana) as a reoccurring nightmare leads to to discover that a sinister entity is after her family.

After fourteen years, the Final Destination franchise returns with a bang. Opening with a haunting opening sequence that is easily in the top three of the franchise, Bloodlines delivers on everything that make the franchise great while also updating it. The story has a neat idea of the descendants of someone who has cheated death which is explored in such a compelling way. A big reveal which is a little predictable but still really cool to see is the back story of franchise favourite character William Bludworth (The late great Tony Todd) and how he came to be so knowledgeable about death.

Characters, especially protagonist Stefani and her younger brother Charlie (Teo Briones), are well captured and have well executed arcs. There is also an interesting dynamic between Stefani and her estranged mother Darlene (Rya Kihlstedt), who left because she was frightened by her own mother (The original survivor) that her children were going to die. The ending, though more than a little obvious, is still well executed and is a memorable way to end the film.

Kaitlyn Santa Juana delivers a great performance as Stefani. Teo Briones is also on very good form as Charlie. Rya Kihlstedt is terrific as Darlene. Richard Harmon, Owen Patrick Joyner, and Anna Lore are all well cast as Stefani and Charlie’s cousins Erik, Bobby, and Julia. Tony Todd is wonderful as always as William Bludworth. Gabrielle Rose, Brec Bassinger, Jayden Oniah, Tinpo Lee, April Telek, Alex Zahara and Max Lloyd-Jones provide strong .

Visually the filmmakers do a fantastic job with building tension and creating some very memorable death scenes. A couple of highlights include the aforementioned opening scene and the MRI machine scene.

My Final Destinationathon throttles on with 20011’s Final Destination 5. I was so excited to see this because a lot of my friends have been calling it their favourite of the franchise.

The film follows the survivors of a bridge collapse as they begin to die off one by one in gruesome and disturbing ways.

Final Destination 5 is easily one of the best in the franchise. The writing has an interesting plot point of people who have cheated death being able to steal the lifespans of others which is decently explored. It also has a breezy pace to it and some really fun kills (One involving acupuncture being particularly entertaining). Characters are also well captured, especially protagonist Sam. The ending where it is revealed that the whole film takes place before the events of the first film is quite fun and well executed.

Nicolas D’Agosto delivers a compelling performance as Sam. Emma Bell is also on great form as his girlfriend Molly. Miles Fisher is well cast as Sa’s work friend Peter. Ellen Wroe, Jacqueline MacInnes Wood, P. J. Byrne, Arlen Escarpeta, David Koechner, Courtney B. Vance, Tony Todd, Brent Strait, Roman Podhora, Jasmin Dring, Barclay Hope, Chasty Ballesteros, and Mike Dopud provide solid .

On the visual side of things, the filmmakers do a great job with building tension in a lot of scenes. A couple of highlights include the opening bridge sequence and the eye-surgery scene.

Final thought: A really solid and entertaining sequel that does something different with the old formula.

My Final Destinationathon throttles on with 2009’s The Final Destination. I haven’t heard the best thing about this one but went in with an open mind.

The film follows the survivors of a horrific car accident at an auto race as they begin to die one by one in equally horrific ways.

While it does have some strong moments, The Final Destination is easily the worst of the franchise so far. The story isn’t as compelling as the others and characters are very one-dimensional and have next to no personality. It also doesn’t add anything to the franchise other than a few memorable deaths. A plot point about a character trying to kill himself because he realises, he is next and wants to be with his deceased family quicker could have been explored more than what it was. The ending is very predictable and just felt very rushed and unsatisfying.

Bobby Campo is on very good form as Nick, thew film’s protagonist. Shantel VanSanten is also well cast as his girlfriend Lori. Mykelti Williamson steal scenes as George, another survivor who they befriend. Nick Zano and Haley Webb also deliver strong performances as Hunt and Janet, friends of Nick and Lori. Andrew Fiscella, Justin Welborn, Stephanie Honoré, Lara Grice, Jackson Walker, and Phil Austin provide decent .

Visually the filmmakers do a terrific job of building tension in a few of the scenes. A highlight is the finale at the cinema.

My Final Destinationathon continues with 2006’s Final Destination 3. This seemed to be consistently ranked up on people’s favourites of this franchise so was really excited to see this.

The third film of the franchise follows the survivors of a roller coaster accident as they begin to die off in gory ways.

While it again is very predictable, the third film in the Final Destination franchise is easily one of its bests. The writing is great, delivering crazy death sequences and a compelling narrative with interesting characters. A story beat involving the characters trying to find out who a mystery person on the roller coaster was manages to be the most engaging and well explored aspect of the narrative. The ending is horrifying and fits perfectly in the feel bad section of horror.

Mary Elizabeth Winstead is on strong form as Wendy, the film’s protagonist. Ryan Merriman, Kris Lemche, Alexz Johnson, Sam Easton, Jesse Moss, Gina Holden, Texas Battle, Chelan Simmons, Crystal Lowe, Amanda Crew, Maggie Ma, Ecstasia Sanders, Patrick Gallagher, Andrew Francis, Cory Monteith, Dustin Milligan, Agam Darshi, and Dylan Basile provide very good .

The filmmakers in this film deliver some of the tensest sequences in the franchise so far. A few highlights include the opening scene, the tanning bed scene and the finale at the fair.

Final thought: A great horror film with easily my personal favourite opening sequence so far.

My Final Destinationathon continues with 2003’s Final Destination 2. I’ve heard some mixed things about this one, but most people tend to agree that it has one of the best openings of the franchise so was excited to check it out.

The film follows the survivors of a potential car pile-up as one by one they are killed off in mysterious and brutal ways.

While it certainly has a memorable opening, the rest of the film is just okay. The story is well paced and well told but feels very predictable and doesn’t add much to the franchise. Characters, especially protagonist Kimberly (A. J. Cook), are explored well and have engaging arcs. The third act is the highlight of the film and builds well to a well-executed conclusion.

As Kimberly, A, J. Cook is on strong form. Ali Larter is great as the returning Clear Rivers. Michael Landes is very good as Thomas, a cop who helps Kimberly and the other survivors. Keegan Connor Tracy, Jonathan Cherry, T. C. Carson, David Paetkau, James Kirk, Lynda Boyd, Justina Machado, Tony Todd, Sarah Carter, Alex Rae, Shaun Sipos, Andrew Airlie, Noel Fisher, Benita Ha, Aaron Douglas, Eric Keenleyside, Enid-Raye Adams, Fred Henderson Alf Humphreys, and Chilton Crane provide solid .

On the visual side of things, the filmmakers do a fantastic job of creating tension from just focusing on ordinary things to make them look so sinister. A couple of highlights include the opening sequence and the elevator scene.

Since Bloodlines is about to come out here (Hopefully seeing it this Sunday!), I decided to go through all the Final Destination films. The original is the only one I have seen before and from what I it was a decent and enjoyable horror that lived up to its premise.

The film Alex Browning (Devon Sawa), a high school student who has a vision that the flight he and his school are going to be on will explode, as he and the people he saves before to die off one by one under mysterious and bloody circumstances.

Despite a predictable narrative, the original Final Destination is a solid and entertaining horror film. The writing is good, especially in the way it takes its interesting premise and delivers some genuine tense build up sequences to the deaths. Characters aren’t that dimensional but there’s enough there that they are likeable and compelling protagonists. The ending is very obvious but still executed well.

Devon Sawa delivers a strong performance as Alex. Ali Larter is fantastic as Clear, another student that is saved from the plane explosion. Kerr Smith, Kristen Cloke, Chad Donella, Amanda Detmer, Seann William Scott, Tony Todd, Daniel Roebuck, Roger Guenveur Smith, Brendan Fehr, Forbes Angus, Lisa Marie Caruk, Christine Chatelain, Barbara Tyson, Robert Wisden, P. Lynn Johnson, and Larry Gilman provide very good .

Visually the filmmakers do a great job of creating tension and some memorable death sequences. A couple of highlights include the shower rail hanging sequence and the train decapitation scene.

Final thought: Still a fun horror film.

If you follow me on Instagram (@ripjd95 if you’re interested), you’ll have seen that I did a 24-hour filmathon to raise money for the charity Medicinema and the amazing work they do there. This is one of the films I watched for it!

Based on the novel of the same name by Anne Rice, the film explores the centuries old relationship between two vampires named Lestat and Louis (Played by Tom Cruise and Brad Pitt respectively).

Interview with the Vampire is an epic gothic horror film about good versus evil and companionship in all its forms. The story, though very slow in places, is compelling from beginning to end. It explores this very dark and complicated relationship between these two men who harbour this dark secret in a thoughtful and compelling way. The relationship gets more complicated when they become guardians to a young orphan named Claudia (Kirsten Dunst) and they begin to teach her their vastly opposing world views. The ending is a little predictable but still well handled and is a strong conclusion for the story.

Tom Cruise delivers a strong performance in a much darker role than he is usually known for. Brad Pitt is on great form as Louis. Christian Slater is well cast as Daniel, a journalist interviewing Louis about his life as a vampire. Kirsten Dunst is very good as Claudia. Antonio Banderas, Stephen Rea, Domiziana Giordano and Thandie Newton provide decent .

Director Neil Jordan and cinematographer Philippe Russelot do a brilliant job of capturing the gothic tone of the book. A highlight is the sequence in which Lestat ambushes Louis and Claudia as they are about to leave to start a new life in Europe. Elliot Goldenthal’s dramatic score is awesome and really adds to the atmosphere of the film.

Final thought: A really compelling story with a great atmosphere and incredible performances. Enjoyed this more than I thought I was going to.

This is the end of the films I watched for the 24-hour filmathon. We raised £281 for Medicinema! Big thanks to those who donated and ed in any way. Please go and check out the amazing work Medicinema do.

Local Hero follows Mac (Peter Riegert), an aspiring executive for a big gas company in America, as he is sent to a small village in Scotland to secure a deal to buy the town for the company.

Local Hero is a poignant, funny look at identity and the impact big companies have on the world. The story suffers a lot from pacing issues, especially in the middle and towards the end but it compelling and well written. Characters, especially protagonist Mac, are well captured by the script and have interesting arcs that are well executed. The ending feels a little rushed but still works well as a conclusion for the story.

Peter Riegert delivers a great performance as Mac. Burt Lancaster is terrific as Mac’s eccentric boss Felix Happer. Peter Capaldi and Denis Lawson are both well cast as Danny and Gordon respectively, two friends Mac makes on his trip. Fulton Mackay is very good as Ben Knox, an old man who lives on the beach in the town. Norman Chancer, Rikki Fulton, Alex Norton, Jenny Seagrove, Jenifer black, Christopher Rozycki, Christopher Asante, John Gordon Sinclair, Caroline Guthrie, John M. Jackson, Jimmy Yuill, Tam Dean Burn, Sandra Voe and Jonathan Watson provide decent .

Final thought: A charming comedy with great performances.

The film follows Dom and Yas (David Jonsson and Vivian Oparah) as they connect over a day after a chance encounter.

Rye Lane is a witty and very charming romantic comedy that is enjoyable from beginning to end. The writing, though a little cliched towards the end, is great and brilliantly paced. Dom and Yas are fantastically captured by the script and have this interesting dynamic where they both find love again after heartbreak which is well explored. The ending where Yas performs a “grand gesture” for Dom is wonderfully executed a very satisfying conclusion for the film.

David Jonsson and Vivian Oparah both deliver amazing performances and share very obvious chemistry. The scene where they show up Dom’s ex and her new partner is a highlight. Simon Manyonda, Karene Peter, Benjamin Sarpong-Bron, Malcolm Atobrah, Alice Hewkin, Poppy Allen-Quarmby, Marva Alexander, llewella Gideon, Gary Beadle, and Omari Douglas provide solid .

Visually the vibrant and wide angled look to the film is so unique and really captures the setting well. The score by Kwes hits the emotional beats of the story perfectly.

Final thought: A delightful romantic comedy with endearing performances.

The film follows Rob (Nicolas Cage), a reclusive truffle-forager, as he ventures out of the Oregon wilderness after his beloved pig is kidnapped.

Pig is a thoughtfully written exploration of loss, grief, and human connection. The story is very well paced and brilliantly told all the way up to its emotional ending. Rob is a fantastic protagonist, especially the idea that he is still able to connect to the humans he meets despite being so grief-stricken and reclusive. He shares this interesting dynamic with Amir (Alex Wolff), a young man who buys truffles off Rob, which is very well explored. The ending where Rob is finally able to listen to the tape of his late wife is fantastically executed and a thought-provoking conclusion.

This is easily one of Cage’s best performances with the highlight being the scene where he and Amir meet the chef in the restaurant. Alex Wolff is also on great form as Amir, especially in the scene where he and Rob have a heart to heart. Adam Arkin, Nina Belforte, Gretchen Corbett, and David Knell provide great .

The film follows Buffy Summers (Kristy Swanson), a cheerleader at high school, as she learns her destiny is to hunt and slay vampires.

Despite a very predictable narrative, this manages to be a funny and watchable horror comedy. The writing is well paced and good, especially when it comes to the dynamic between Buffy and Merrick (Donald Sutherland), the one who teaches Buffy about being a slayer. Characters are all written well and have personalities but don’t get much of an arc. The ending, as predictable as it is, is well executed and is a satisfying conclusion.

Kristy Swanson is on strong form as Buffy. Donald Sutherland is well cast as Merrick. Paul Reubens and Rutger Hauer do very good work as Amilyn and Lothos, the antagonists of the story. Luke Perry is great as Pike, Buffy’s love interest who helps her. Michele Abrams, Hilary Swank, Paris Vaughan, David Arquette, Randall Batinkoff, Andrew Lowery, Sasha Jenson, Stephen Root, Natasha Gregson Wagner, Thomas Jane, Candy Clark and James Paradise provide decent .

Visually it is a little on the heavily edited side but there’s still some sequences that are well filmed. A couple of highlights include Pike being ambushed by the vampires and the basketball game scene.

The film follows Luke (Miles Robbins), a severely anxious college student, as his imaginary childhood friend Daniel (Patrick Schwarzenegger) is let out of the house Luke locked him years ago.

Although let down by a slightly weak and predictable ending, Daniel Isn’t Real is an eerie look of mental illness through the horror genre. The writing is fantastic, especially in the way it plays with Luke’s reality. There’s a dark and really twisted dynamic between Luke and Daniel where Daniel begins to help Luke in various aspects of his life which is compelling and well explored.

Miles Robbins is on great form as Luke. Patrick Schwarzenegger steals scenes as Daniel. Sasha Lane is well cast as Cassie, Luke’s love interest. Mary Stuart Masterson is very good as Claire, Luke’s mother. Hannah Marks, Chukwudi Iwuji, and Peter McRobbie provide strong .

Visually director Adam Egypt Mortimer and cinematographer Lyle Vincent create an incredibly uneasy atmosphere with surreal imagery and long takes. A highlight is the sequence where Luke’s therapist (Iwuji) discovers Daniel is real. Clark’s dark and ethereal score also adds to the tension.

Final thought: An awesome psychological horror.

Factory Girl explores the tragic life of Edie Sedgwick (Sienna Miller) and her friendship with Andy Warhol (Guy Pearce).

Factory Girl is your bog-standard biopic. The story is decently told but suffers a lot from pacing issues through the film. It explores Edie’s relationship with Andy very well, especially how they were so connected at the beginning, but every other aspect of her life feels very underexplored. There’s a lot of other things about her life that could have been explored more such as her career and her family life. The ending, especially that final shot of Andy downplaying his friendship with Edie, leaves you feeling all sort of emotions.

Sienna Miller delivers one of the best performances of her career as Edie. The scene where she confronts Andy at the table is a highlight. Guy Pearce is well cast as Andy. Hayden Christensen is great as Billy (A character based on Bob Dylan). Jimmy Fallon, Jack Huston, Tara Summers, Mena Suvari, Shawn Hatosy, Beth Grant, James Naughton, Edward Hermann, Mary-Kate Olsen, Illeana Douglas, Mary Elizabeth Winstead, Don Novello, Johnny Whitworth, and Brian Bell provide very good .

The film follows Dr Edward Newgate (Jim Sturgess), a doctor just graduated from Oxford, as he arrives at Stonehearst Asylum where things aren’t what they seem.

For the most part, Stonehearst Asylum is a decently told loose adaptation of a short story by Edgar Allen Poe. The tone is interesting, and characters are written well enough that the audience is engaged. It unfortunately gets let down by a weak second half that just gets very predictable and just not as satisfying. The ending is very rushed and predictable that it falls flat.

Kate Beckinsale is on very good form as Eliza Graves. Jim Sturgess is well cast as Dr Edward Newgate. Ben Kingsley is great as Dr Silas Lamb. Michael Caine, David Thewlis, Brendan Gleeson, Sinéad Cusack, Sophie Kennedy Clark, Christopher Fulford, Jason Flemyng, Edmund Kingsley, and Guillaume Delaunay provide strong .

Visually the gothic atmosphere from Poe’s stories is well captured by the filmmakers. John Debney’s dark and atmospheric score is impressive and adds to the tension.

The film follows Karen White (Dee Wallace), a news anchor, as she visits a special resort after a traumatic encounter with a serial killer. She soon discovers that there’s a deadly secret behind the resort.

While it does suffer slightly from pacing, The Howling is an eerie, gore filled werewolf film. The story, a much darker take on the werewolf story, is well written and has interesting characters. A story beat that the resort is like a secret haven for the werewolves is interesting and well explored. The ending, as predictable as it is, is well executed and is a satisfying conclusion for the story.

Dee Wallace delivers one of the best performances of her career. The scene where she encounters the serial killer is a highlight. Dennis Dugan and Belinda Balaski are also on great form as Chirs and Terri, two friends who help Karen. Christopher Stone is very good as Bill, Karen’s husband. Elisabeth Brooks is well cast as the mysterious Marsha. Patrick Macnee, Kevin McCarthy, John Carradine, Slim Pickens, Robert Picardo, Margie Impert, Noble Willingham, James Murtaugh, Jim McKrell, Kenneth Tobey, Dick Miller, and Meshach Taylor provide strong .

Visually the filmmakers create some amazing sequences that are terrifying and memorable. The effects, especially the transformations and werewolf designs, look phenomenal.

Final thought: Terrific and eerie.

Adapted from a novel of the same name by Ken Bruen, the film follows a Detective Tom Brant (Jason Statham) as he hunts a serial killer who is brutally targeting other police officers.

Although Blitz is your typical Jason Statham action thriller, it still manages to be a compelling watch. The story is very predictable, but it is engaging and doesn’t drag in of run time. There’s a subplot involving a fellow officer who is a recovering addict (Played by Zawe Ashton) that could have been explored better but it didn’t interrupt the overall story that much. Characters, especially Brant, are written well but don’t get much in the way of arcs. Brant and Nash (Paddy Considine), Brant’s partner on the case, share an interesting dynamic that is well written. Blitz (Aidan Gillen) is a compelling antagonist, especially the idea that he is so deranged and plays to the media.

Statham is pretty much playing Statham here, but it is still a very good performance. Paddy Considine is well cast as Nash. Aidan Gillen steals scenes as Blitz. David Morrissey, Zawe Ashton, Luke Evans, Mark Rylance, Nicky Henson, Ned Dennehy, and Ron Donachie provide solid .

On the visual side of things, the action is a little on the heavily edited side but there are still some fun and decent sequences. A couple of highlights include Brant chasing Blitz through London by foot and the finale where Brant and Nash lure Blitz.

Final thought: Slightly improved on a rewatch for me.

Idle Hands follows Anton (Devon Sawa), a lazy stoner slacker, as he discovers his hand has become possessed and forces him to go on a killing spree.

Idle Hands feels like a great mix of 90s horror and fun b-movie. The writing, though predictable, is good and weaves a breezy, engaging story that meshes the horror with the comedy well. Characters are also written well, especially Anton who comes off as more dimensional than your average stoner cliché character. The ending, as predictable, is decently executed and is a satisfying conclusion for the story.

Devon Sawa delivers a very entertaining performance as Anton. Seth Green and Elden Henson are both well cast as his friends Mick and Pnub respectively. Jessica Alba is very good as Molly, Anton’s love interest. Vivica A. Fox, Jack Noseworthy, Christopher Hart, Steve Van Wormer, Fred Wilard, Connie Ray, Katie Wright, Kelly Monaco, Sean Whalen, Nick Sadler, Randy Oglesby, and Timothy Stack provide solid .

Visually the filmmakers do a very good job with creating tension. A couple of memorable sequences include the opening scene and the sequence where Anton discovers his hand is possessed and accidentally kills his friends.

Couldn’t decide what I wanted to watch but found this and realised I hadn’t watched it before.

The film is set in the 1920s and follows Anya (Voiced by Meg Ryan), a young orphan, as she goes on an adventure to discover the past she can’t .

While it is nowhere near the best film made by Disney, Anastasia is a fun and engaging adventure full of romance and humour. The story is very predictable and slow in placed but is kept compelling due to the characters and conflict. Anya is a well captured protagonist and her dynamic with Dimitri (Voiced John Cusack), a con man who initially uses Anya for his own gains, is interesting and well captured. Rasputin (Voiced by Christopher Lloyd), the film’s antagonist, is well written and very creepy. The ending is well executed and is a satisfying conclusion.

The voice cast are all great and well suited for their roles. Visually the filmmakers do a great job with capturing the scale of the story and character designs. A highlight is Rasputin himself and all the unusual ways his body can contort thanks to the dark magic. The action is also terrific, especially the opening sequence and the scene where Rasputin tries to get Anya to jump off the boat.

Final thought: Not my favourite Disney film by far but still fun and engaging.

The film follows Beau Wassermann (Joaquin Phoenix), a deeply paranoid man, as he experiences a surreal and harrowing journey to his mother (Patti LuPone).

The most recently film from director Ari Aster is a compelling, funny, and weird experience that feels like a real pivot from his two previous works. It does suffer a lot from pacing, especially towards the end but is engaging thanks to how unique it is and the way it explores the themes of generational trauma and mental illness. Beau is an interesting protagonist and his arc of realising that he can’t control everything in life is well written. The ending, especially the final shot, is thought-provoking and leaves the audience with so many emotions.

As Beau Wassermann, Joaquin Phoenix delivers one of the best performances of his career. Armen Nahapetian is also very good as young Beau. Patti LuPone and Zoe Lister-Jones are also on strong form as both his present-day mother and younger mother respectively. Amy Ryan, Nathan Lane, Kylie Rogers, Denis Ménochet, Parker Posey, Julia Antonelli, Stephen McKinley Henderson, Richard Kind, Hayley Squires, Julian Richings, Michael Esper, Michael Gandolfini, Théodore Pellerin, and Mike Taylor provide solid .

Aster and cinematographer Pawel Pogorzeiski deliver some incredibly striking imagery and anxiety ridden sequences. Was scrolling through Instagram today and came across a video that talked about this film (Very sorry but I can’t the name of the I saw it from). It sounded really interesting, and I saw it was on Prime so decided to give it a chance.

The film follows Jessica Loren (Juliana Harkavy), a rookie police officer as she is assigned to watch over a police station before it is permanently closed. As the night goes on, Jessica begins to experience violent and horrifying events that make her question her reality.

While it does get a bit predictable towards the end, Last Shift is riveting and extremely eerie psychological horror that mixes Assault on Precinct 13 with Longlegs. It is paced very well and unfolds cleverly as Jessica is haunted by visions that become more and more horrific. Jessica is a great protagonist, and the script really explores her vulnerability well. The ending, as predictable as it is, is disturbing and a very effective way to conclude the story.

Juliana Harkavy delivers a strong performance as Jessica, especially in the sequence where she is attacked by a person from underneath her desk. Joshua Mikel, Hank Stone, J. LaRose, Natalie Victoria, Sarah Sculco, Kathryn Kilger, Mary Lankford, and Matt Doman provide very good .

Visually the filmmakers create such a haunting atmosphere for the film with startling imagery and long takes that seem to go on longer than they actually do. A highlight is the sequence where Jessica encounters a corpse that begins to float and stare at her.

Final thought: A creepy gem of a horror film. Well worth a watch.

SPOILERS! SPOILERS! SPOILERS! SPOILERS!

The film follows a group of antiheroes as they are forced to team up when a new dangerous threat emerges.

While it does have a predictable narrative, the latest film in the MCU is a fun team up adventure with antiheroes. The writing is strong, especially with the characterisations of the team and its depiction of mental illness and is quite breezy in its runtime. There’s a fun dynamic between the team that is engaging and well explored. Bob (Lewis Pullman) is an interesting addition for the franchise and is well written. He makes for an interesting “antagonist” because he is essentially both a hero and (In his Void form) a villain which works well going up against the antiheroes. The ending is predictable but still well executed and satisfying.

Florence Pugh delivers a great performance as Yelena. Wyatt Russell steals scenes as Walker/ U.S. Agent. Hannah John-Kamen is well cast as Ava/ Ghost. Sebastian Stan is terrific as always as Bucky. David Harbour is on hilarious form as Alexei/ Red Guardian. Olga Kurylenko is extremely underused in her role as Antonia/ Taskmaster. Lewis Pullman is fantastic as Bob/ Sentry. Julia Louis-Dreyfus is very good as Valentina Allegra de Fontaine. Geraldine Viswanathan, Chris Bauer, and Wendell Pierce provide strong as Mel, Holt, and Gary respectively.

On the visual side of things, action is decently filmed and entertaining. A couple of highlights include the group meeting for the first time and the sequence where the group enter Bob’s mind.

Final thought: A lot of fun. Would love to see more with this team.

Che: Part Two depicts the downfall of the revolutionary leader (Played by Benicio del Toro) as he leads a doomed campaign in Bolivia.

While it still suffers a lot from pacing, Che: Part Two is just a brilliant and powerful as the first part. The story of how Che attempted to do what they did in Cuba in Bolivia is well told, especially the idea that they weren’t as welcomed by the citizens of Bolivia than they were in Cuba. A lot of the conflict comes from the inner battles Che had to fight with his soldiers who were questioning the cause which is very compelling. The ending is well written and full of mixed emotions.

Benicio del Toro delivers a phenomenal performance as Che. The scene where he is captured and interrogated before his death is a highlight. Demián bichir, Rodrigo Santoro, Franka Potente, Gastön Pauls, Lou Diamond Phillips, Joaquim de Almeida, Yul Vazquez, Marc-André Grondin, Eduard Fernández, Cristian Mercado, Jordi Mollà, Pablo Durán, Óscar Jaenada, Rubén Ochandiano, Ezequiel Diaz, Carlos Acosta-Milian, Antonio de la Torre, Juan Carlos Vellido, Aaron Vega, Roberto San Martin, James D. Visually director Steven Soderbergh and cinematographer Peter Andrews do an outstanding job of capturing the scale of the story. Alberto Iglesias’ score is full of sadness and melancholy.

Been wanting to watch this for a while as I love the director and main actor and thought the idea of them working together on a biopic about this man sounded really interesting.

Che: Part One depicts revolutionary leader Ernesto “Che” Guevara (Played by Benicio del Toro) during the Cuban Revolution.

The first part od this biopic is a compelling, thoughtfully written look at a man and the ideals that drive him. It does suffer a little from pacing, especially in the middle, but the way it explores the man and the politics at the time keeps it so engaging. An aspect of the story that is particularly well captured is seeing how Che remains resolute in his ideals during the war. The ending where he angrily demands a soldier return a stolen car perfectly encapsulates this and is a fantastic way to end the film.

Benicio del Toro delivers one of the finest, if not THE finest, performance of his career as Che. The scene where he sentences a former soldier of the revolution to death is a highlight. Demián Bichir, Rodrigo Santoro, Santiago Cabrera, Catalina Sandino Moreno, Julia Ormond, Vladimir Cruz, Jorge Perugorria, Benjamin Benitez, Édgar Ramirez, Bruno Bichir, Armando Riesco, Néstor Rodulfo, Jsu Garcia, Elvira Minguez, Alfredo De Quesada, Roberto Luis Santana, Sam Robards, Victor Rasuk, Kahlil Mendz, Marise Álvarez, Andrés Manuel Munar, Unax Ugalde, Othello Rensoli, Norman Santiago, Pedro Telemaco, Jay Potter, Stephen Mailer, Jon De Vries, Joksan Ramos, Javier Ortiz, Michael Countryman, and Oscar Isaac provide very good .

Visually director Soderbergh and cinematographer do a great job of capturing the harsh reality of way. A highlight is the Battle of Santa Clara that closes the film. The score by Alberto Iglesias is gorgeous and really hits the emotional beats of the story perfectly.

Final thought: A riveting biopic with a brilliant central performance. Watching the final part tomorrow.

Using real testimonies of the soldiers that were there, the film depicts an encounter a platoon had during hr Battle of Ramadi in 2006.

Warfare is a tense, incredibly realistic depiction of war that does a fantastic job of putting audience inside the head of a solider during a battle. The story is compelling and the gimmick of it being in real time is well used. Because of how the film is presented there isn’t a lot of time dedicated to getting to know the characters individually but, the closeness as a unit and their protectiveness of one and another is well captured. The ending is very powerful and is brilliantly executed.

Joseph Quinn delivers a great performance as Sam, the LPO. D’Pharaoh Woon-A-Tai is fantastic as Ray (In real life the film’s co-director Ray Mendoza). Cosmo Jarvis steals scenes as Elliott, the lead sniper. Charles Melton, Will Poulter, Kit Connor, Finn Bennett, Taylor John Smith, Michael Gandolfini, Adain Bradley, Noah Centineo, Evan Holtzman, Henry Zaga, Alex Brockdorff, Nathan Altai, Donya Hussen, and Aaron Deakins provide great .

The visual style and sound design of this film is so immersive. A particular highlight is the scene where everyone is just sitting around while the snipers observe the comings and goings of the locals outside.

Final thought: A riveting portrayal of people having to act in extreme situations with excellent performances.

SPOILERS! SPOILERS! SPOILERS! SPOILERS!

Despite the mixed to negative reviews, I was excited to see this because I am a big fan of the game (It’s a top five video game for me) and I like the director a lot, especially his work in the horror genre.

The film follows a group of friends as they attempt to retrace the last known steps of one of their siblings as they find themselves trapped in a deadly cycle of trauma and violence.

While it is more than predictable and nothing we haven’t seen before, this remains a compelling adaptation of the game that does what it says on the tin. The narrative is breezy and has decently written characters that are explored well. Its main plot point of the characters finding themselves trapped in a night that repeats itself is handled well and engaging. A few aspects from the game feature in the film as well and don’t feel forced into the standalone story just to tie it to the game. The ending, as predictable as it is, is satisfying and sets a possible sequel in a fun way.

Ella Rubin delivers a strong performance as protagonist Clover. Michael Cimino is well cast as her former boyfriend and friend Max. Odessa A’zion and Belmont Cameli both deliver very good performances as Nina and Abe, friends of the group who are together romantically. Ji-young Yoo is on solid form as Megan, a member of the group. Peter Stormare reprises his role as Dr. Hill from the game and is terrific. Maia Mitchel provides decent as Melanie, Clover’s sister.

Visually the filmmakers do a brilliant job of capturing the eerie atmosphere and tone of the game (Even with some fun recreations of the death screens). A couple of highlights include the first night and the sequence where Max enters a house that belongs to a witch. Benjamin Wallfisch’s score is suitably intense, especially in the third act.

Final thought: Not amazing but I had fun with this and would be open to seeing another film of this made by this team.

The film is set in the 1930s and follows two twins Smoke and Stack (Michael B. Jordan) as they return to their hometown to open a juke for the local black community only to be forced to fight against a supernatural evil led by the mysterious Remmick (Jack O’Connell).

While it takes a while to get going, Sinners is a both a phenomenal vampire film and a wonderful celebration of music. The story is brilliantly written with a narrative that unfolds in a clever way (A little like From Dusk till Dawn) and interesting characters. It isn’t hugely scary but the atmosphere to it makes it so tense and uneasy. The ending is slightly obvious but still well executed and is a great conclusion for the story.

Michael B. Jordan is on fantastic form as Smoke and Stack. Miles Caton steals scenes as Sammie, Smoke and Stack’s cousin. Jack O’Connell is excellent as Remmick. Hailee Steinfeld and Wunmi Mosaku are both terrific as Mary and Annie, the twin’s love interests. Jayme Lawson, Omar Miller, Delroy Lindo, Li Jun Li, Yao, Lola Kirke, Peter Dreimanis, David Maldonado, Saul Williams, Helen Hu, Andrene Ward-Hammond, Nathaniel Arcand, Tenaj L. Jackson, and Nicole Banks provide very good .

Visually this film is stunning. Director Ryan Coogler and cinematographer Autumn Durald Arkapaw deliver some incredible imagery and amazing sequences with a couple of highlights being the jawdropping oner song sequence and the scene where Smoke ambushes the Klan . Ludwig Göransson’s blues infused score is amazing and hits the emotional beats of the story perfectly.

Final thought: It is awesome to see original projects like this not only existing in today’s film world but also thriving. One of the year's best.

This is a rewatch, but a first time watch for my friend Darren! I a lot about this film so was really excited to watch it again when he suggested we watch it.

The film follows a family as they discover a sinister entity has attached itself to their home.

Even after multiple rewatches, Poltergeist still holds up as a fantastic and creepy story about your average American family being terrorised by supernatural forces. It might suffer a little from pacing, particularly in the sense that it takes a while to get going, but it is still so thrilling. The second half of the film, where the family go through hell rescuing their youngest daughter, is so tense and builds so effectively to an incredibly satisfying conclusion.

Craig T. Nelson and JoBeth Williams are both on great form as the parents Steve and Diane. Dominique Dunne, Oliver Robins, and Heather O’Rourke are all well cast as their children Dana, Robbie, and Carol Anne. Zelda Rubinstein steals scenes as Tangina, a spirit medium who helps the family. Beatrice Straight, Martin Casella, and Richard Lawson also deliver strong performances as Dr. Lesh, Dr. Casey, and Dr. Mitchell who also help the family. Michael McManus, Virginia Kiser, James Karen, Dirk Blocker, Lou Perryman, and Sonny Landham provide very good .

Visually the film still holds up with some very creative sequences and awesome effects. A couple of highlights is the scene where a man hallucinates peeling his own skin off and the finale.

Final thought: A simple yet effective ghost story with great performances.

Had a film night with my friend Darren and this was his pick. I was quite interested in seeing this because it sounded like a really gross b-movie film.

The film is a remake of the 1958 film of the same name and follows a small town in California as it is besieged by a bloblike organism that devours and dissolves anything in its path.

The remake of The Blob manages to be a great mesh of gory sci-fi horror and paranoid thriller about conspiracy theories and mistrust in the government. The story is well written with a breezy pace and interesting characters that are explored well. An aspect of the story that is especially engaging is the dynamic between cheerleader Meg (Shawnee Smith) and rebellious biker Brian (Kevin Dillon) as they team up to save the town from The Blob. The ending is slightly predictable but still brilliantly executed and is very satisfying as a conclusion.

Kevin Dillon delivers a strong performance as Brian. Shawnee Smith is also on great form as Meg. Joe Seneca is well cast as Dr. Meddows, a scientist for the military that doesn’t have true intentions. Donovan Leitch is also very good as Paul, Meg’s boyfriend. Jeffrey DeMunn, Candy Clark, Del Close, Sharon Spelman, Beau Billingslea, Art LaFleur, Ricky Paull, Paul McCrane, Michael Kenworth, Douglas Emerson, Robert Axelrod, Bill Moseley, Erika Eleniak, Jack Rader, and Jack Nance provide solid .

Visually the filmmakers lean into the b-movie aesthetic which works well for the story. It has some creative sequences like the diner sequence and the scene in the sewer. The special effects still look incredible and make for some really memorable deaths.

Final thought Honestly, so much better than you’d expect. Quite temped to see the original now.

Had a film night with my friend Darren. This was my choice, and I haven’t seen it in years but wanted to rewatch it because I want to get more into this franchise (Only played a couple of the games).

The film follows Rose (Radha Mitchell) as she takes her adopted daughter Sharon (Jodelle Ferland) to the cursed town of Silent Hill in the hopes for answers to Sharon’s recent mental health crisis.

While it does suffer a little from pacing and a predictable narrative, this is a compelling adaptation that treats its source material well. The story is told well and has interesting characters, especially protagonist Rose. Its central mystery is engaging and touches on the theme of guilt well. The ending, though still very predictable, is well executed and works well as a conclusion for the story.

Radha Mitchell is on strong form as Rose. Sean Bean is well cast as her husband Christopher. Laurie Holden is great as Cybil, a motorcycle police officer who is brought into Silent Hill when she follows Rose. Jodelle Ferland delivers very good performances in three different roles. Deborah Kara Unger, Kim Coates, Tanya Allen, and Alice Krige provide solid .

Visually the filmmakers do a terrific job of capturing the cold and eerie atmosphere of the games with startling imagery and lack of jump scares. A couple of standout sequences include Rose’s entry into the town and the alarm rings out and the scene in the school toilets.

Final thought: A decent adaptation.

The film follows a hypochondriac named George (Hudson) as he tries to find a suitable man to marry his wife Judy (Doris Day) after he is mistakenly led to believe he only has a few weeks to live.

While it is more than a little predictable, Send Me no Flowers is a breezy, very funny romantic comedy. The writing is great, particularly in the witty way it explores the relationship between George and Judy. Another really fun aspect to the story is the way their friend Arnold (Tony Randall) gets so attached to George as he is “dying”. The ending, as predictable as it is, is charming and works well as a satisfying conclusion for the story.

Hudson and Day are both on terrific form as George and Judy. The opening scene is a particular highlight of their chemistry. Tony Randall is hilarious as Arnold. Clint Walker is well cast as Bert, Judy’s former school friend who George thinks might be perfect husband material. Paul Lynde, Hal March, Edward Andrews, Patricia Barry, Clive Clerk, and Dave Willock provide very good .

Final thought: A very funny and charming rom com about death with great performances. I’ve always been interested in Rock Hudson but have never seen any of his films till now but I’m thinking I might check more out now.

The film follows two siblings named Mimi and Luke (Nita-Josee Hanna and Owen Myre respectively) as they uncover a strange gem that allows them to control a deadly alien warlord.

PG is both an absolute ride and a very fun throwback to the sci-fi/ fantasy films from the eighties. The writing, though a little predictable, is well paced and engaging from beginning to end. Characters, especially the main three, are well captured and have well executed arcs. The dynamic between the kids and Psycho Goreman (The nickname they affectionally call him) is entertaining and well explored.

Nita-Josee Hannah and Owen Myre both deliver great performances as Mimi and Luke. Matthew Ninaber (And Steven Vlahos doing the voice) does a great job of making PG seem so menacing. Adam Brooks and Alexis Hancey are both well cast as Greg and Susan, the bickering parents of Mimi and Luke. Kristen MacCulloch is on strong form as Pandora, a warrior sent to kill PG.

Visually this film has some awesome sequences that make great use of practical effects. A couple of highlights include the ambush/ fight in the woods and the climactic fight between PG and Pandora.

Final thought: A LOT of fun.

Watched this on the plane over to .

The film follows Andy (Gabriel Bateman), as the doll he is gifted by his mum (Aubrey Plaza) begins to show a dark side.

While this does have some interesting moments and entertaining kills, this is a largely forgettable remake/ reboot that desperately tries to tie itself to the original franchise when it should have tried to be more original. The story has a lot of compelling elements (The AI doll becoming too attached to the protagonist and starts killing to be with him) but just doesn’t do anything unique with them. A death in the third act comes so late in the film when it could have made the third act far more interesting had it been focused on that instead of the been done before one they went with. Characters don’t get much in the way of dimension and their arcs are very rushed and badly executed. The ending is very predictable and anticlimactic.

Despite feeling very wasted by the material, Aubrey Plaza is well cast as Andy’s mum Karen. Gabriel Bateman delivers a very good performance as Andy. Brian Tyree Henry is great as Mike, the detective next door to Andy and Karen. Mark Hamill manages to create a creepy, overprotective take on the infamous doll. Tim Matheson, Beatrice Kitsos, Ty Consiglio, Marlon Kazadi, David Lewis, and Carlease Burke provide decent .

Visually the filmmakers manage to create some fun and entertaining sequences. A couple of highlights include the murder of Karen’s awful boyfriend and the darkly funny murder of the pervy janitor. Bear McCreary’s dark and intense score is great and really helps builds the tension.

Final thought: Not as bad as I’ve been told but I still didn’t like it.

The film follows Violet (Meghann Fahy), a widowed single mother, as she goes on a first date with Henry (Brandon Sklenar). The date is going well until Violet starts to receive ominous messages through “drops” on her phone.

Drop is 95 minutes of brilliant storytelling that cleverly updates a story that has been told a few times before. The story is riveting, and the lean script means no time is wasted in any scene. Characters, especially Violet, are well captured and have compelling arcs that have a satisfying payoff. Violet’s arc of going from a survivor of domestic violence to rescuing her child when she thought she couldn’t is especially well explored. The big reveal about who the mysterious person behind the messages is slightly predictable but the execution is great, and it leads to a well-executed conclusion.

Meghann Fahy delivers a strong performance as Violet. Brandon Sklenar is also on great form as her date Henry. The scene where they both open up to each other is a highlight of both performances. Violett Beane, Jacob Robinson, Reed Diamond, Gabrielle Ryan Spring, Jeffery Self, Ed Weeks, and Travis Nelson provide very good .

On a visual level, the filmmakers deliver some really well filmed sequences. A couple of highlights include the scene where Violet retrieves the SD card from Henry’s camera and the finale where Violet races home to save her son.

The film follows Elliot Kintner and his daughter Ridley (Paul Rudd and Jenna Ortega respectively) when they are hunted down by unicorns after accidentally killing their child.

It doesn’t offer anything new, but Death of a Unicorn delivers on its interesting premise with a fun and entertaining horror comedy. The writing, though extremely predictable, is good and meshes the horror with the comedy well. It is both a good satire on the rich and a compelling horror about a father and daughter reconnecting as they are hunted by monsters.

An aspect of the story that is clever is the lore of the unicorns (From a famous tapestry) and how that is a parallel to the story in the film. Characters, especially Elliot and Ridley, are well captured and have well executed arcs. The ending, as predictable as it is very satisfying and well earned.

Paul Rudd delivers a great performance as Elliot. Jenna Ortega is terrific as Ridley. Will Poulter, Téa Leoni, and Richard E. Grant all deliver fun performances as The Leopold’s, the rich family that Elliot works for. Anthony Carrigan, Jessica Hynes, Sunita Mani, and Steve Park provide very good .

Visually the filmmakers do a great job of creating tension with some cleverly shot sequences. A couple of highlights include the scene where the unicorns ambush the humans and the scene where the unicorns break into the mansion.

The film follows Brigitte and Ginger (Emily Perkins and Katharine Isabelle), two morbid and socially outcast teenage sisters, as their relationship is tested when they are attacked by a mysterious creature.

This was a brilliant take on the werewolf film. The writing is great, cleverly updating the werewolf film while at the same time telling a compelling story about two close sisters who slowly fall apart. Brigitte and Ginger’s dynamic is very well explored, especially their t obsession with death, which adds to the stakes and makes the finale more tragic. Its ending is more than a little predictable but remains effective and well executed.

Emily Perkins and Katharine Isabelle are both on fantastic form as Brigitte and Ginger. The scene where they fight in the school is a highlight of both of their performances. Kris Lemche is well cast as Sam, the local drug dealer who helps Brigitte. Mimi Rogers and John Bourgeois are both very good as Brigitte and Ginger’s parents. Jesse Moss, Danielle Hampton, and Peter Keleghan provide decent .

Visually the filmmakers do an excellent job of instilling the film with this eerie atmosphere. A couple of highlights include the sequence where the girls are attacked by the creature and the finale where Brigitte is chased around the house by a fully transformed Ginger. The creature design of the werewolf is gross (In a good way!) and feels quite distinct from others in films.

“That’s great poetry.”

This is my first Harmony Korine film! I’ve heard a lot about this director and his style of filmmaking sounded really interesting to me.

The film follows Moondog (Matthew McConaughey), a poet living life his way in Florida, as he tries to finish his new novel and earn both the respect of his daughter (Stefania LaVie Owen) and his share of his wife’s (Isla Fisher) estate after she dies.

While not all of it completely worked for me, The Beach Bum is a funny, surreal look at artistic freedom and self-expression. The story is decently told and feels like it captures a small slice of life in Florida like Richard Linklater captured in Slacker. Moondog is an interesting protagonist, someone who lives in his own lane and just wants to be left alone. His arc could have been explored better as it felt like it was just quickly wrapped up at the end. The ending, including the final shot of Moondog floating away laughing, is a little predictable but still well executed and is a satisfying conclusion.

Matthew McConaughey is on great form as Moondog. The scene where he talks about the dream he had is a highlight. Isla Fisher and Stefania LaVie Owen are both well cast as his wife and daughter Minnie and Heather respectively. Snoop Dogg is very good as Lingerie, Moondog’s friend. Martin Lawrence, Zac Efron, Jonah Hill, Jimmy Buffett, Donovan Williams, David Bennett and Joshua Ritter provide decent .

Visually Korine and cinematographer Benoît Debie capture the hedonistic life of these characters with surreal and vibrant imagery. A highlight is the scene where Moondog and Minnie enjoy a night together before being involved in a car accident.

Final thought: Flawed but interesting (And at times funny) film.

Decided to put this on because Val Kilmer sadly ed away yesterday, and I haven’t seen this before.

The film follows Willow (Warwick Davis), an aspiring magician, as he teams up with a former warrior named Martigan (Val Kilmer) to protect a young baby princess from the brutal Queen Bavmorda (Jean Marsh).

While it does suffer a lot from pacing and a predictable narrative, Willow is a fun and entertaining adventure fantasy film. The writing is engaging all the way through, especially in the way it portrays the world and the stakes involved. There’s a compelling dynamic between Willow and Martigan that is well explored and is easily the most interesting part of the film. The ending, as predictable as it is, is satisfying and well earned.

Warwick Davis delivers a strong performance as Willow. Val Kilmer is incredibly charming as Martigan. Joanne Whalley is very good as Sorsha, Bavmorda’s daughter and love interest for Martigan. Jean Marsh is well cast as Bavmorda. Patricia Hayes, Billy Barty, Pat Roach, Gavin O’Herlihy, Maria Holvöe, Kevin Pollak, Rick Overton, David J. Steinberg, Mark Northover, Phil Fondacaro, Julie Peters, and Tony Cox provide solid .

Visually the film looks great and has aged really well. The action is a bit clunky but there are still some well filmed sequences like the escape from the inn and the sledging down the hill. James Horner’s evocative score hits the emotional beats of the story well.

Final thought: A flawed but entertaining fantasy adventure film with great performances. Would make a very good double bill with The Princess Bride.

The film follows “Fletch” (Jon Hamm), a freelance writer and former journalist, as he is framed for the murder of a woman in Boston as he is attempting to find the missing art collection that belongs to an Italian count.

Confess, Fletch is a flawed but entertaining crime film. The writing, though more than a little predictable and a bit slow towards the end, is engaging and funny all the way through. Fletch as a character is well captured by the script and shares compelling dynamics with the other characters, especially the detectives following him Monroe and Griz (Roy Wood Jr. and Ayden Mayeri respectively). The ending is obvious but still well executed and leads to a very satisfying conclusion.

Jon Hamm is on excellent and very charming form as Fletch. Roy Wood Jr. and Ayden Mayeri are both well cast as Monroe and Griz. Lorenza Izzo is great as Angela, Fletch’s love interest. Annie Mumolo, John Behlmann, and Kyle MacLachlan are all terrific as the potential suspects Eve, Owen, and Ronald. The film is set in the eighties and follows Lisa (Kathryn Newton), a lonely teenager, as she meets and falls in love with The Creature (Cole Sprouse), a reanimated man from the Victoria era.

Lisa Frankenstein feels like the lovechild of Tim Burton and a 90s romantic comedy…In a good way! The writing is great, especially in the way it balances darker side of the story with the comedic. An aspect of the story that is very well captured is the way Lisa connects with The Creature because they’re both misunderstood. The ending, as predictable as it is, is well executed and is a satisfying conclusion for the story.

Kathryn Newton is on fantastic and hilarious form as Lisa (The scene where The Creature picks her up in the car is a highlight). Cole Sprouse is also terrific as The Creature, especially his use of physical comedy. Liza Soberano is well cast as Taffy, Lisa’s stepsister. Henry Eikenberry, Joe Chrest, Carla Gugino, Joey Bree Harris, Jenna Davis, Paola Andino, Bryce Romero, and Trina LaFargue provide strong .

Sunday Slashers is a ongoing thing I am doing on this where I watch a random slasher on a Sunday. Here is the list of what I have watched so far (Not Ranked, just in order of how I watched them).

  • Satan's Blade

Final thought: A simple but engaging slasher.

  • Doom Asylum

Final thought: Very much a dud.

  • Tourist Trap

Final thought: A really effective and creepy slasher.

  • Pieces

Final thought: A well-made and fun but flawed slasher.

  • The Initiation

Final thought: Far from perfect but still a decent slasher.

  • The Driller Killer

Final thought: Was expecting more but this was just super dull.

  • The Wind

Final thought: A simple but effective slasher with very good performances.

  • Intruder

Final thought: A brilliant slasher that I’m amazed doesn’t get spoken more about.

  • Ice Cream Man

Final thought: Enjoyable slasher with a very creepy central performance from Clint Howard. Deserves a remake in my opinion.

  • The Last Matinee

Final thought: A pretty awesome and intense slasher. Well worth a watch.

  • The Lords of Salem

Final thought: Predictable but interesting film to watch.

  • Ring 0

Final thought: Not perfect but still an interesting prequel.

  • Ring

    Final thought: Terrifying.

  • Ring 2

Final thought: A decent sequel that is worth a watch.

  • Ghosts of War

Final thought: Let down by a silly second half.

  • Sleepy Hollow

Final thought: A flawed but entertaining gothic supernatural horror.

  • Hellraiser III: Hell on Earth

Final thought: More entertaining than I thought it would be.

  • The Exorcist

A List Of Films That Are Really Special To Me 47j3m https://letterboxd.sitesdebloques.org/eipjd/list/a-list-of-films-that-are-really-special-to/ letterboxd-list-6278932 Sat, 23 Nov 2019 08:49:00 +1300 <![CDATA[

This list will show what films mean a lot to me and why. I will probably be constantly updating this list as and when so bear with me.

  • The Blair Witch Project

This is the film that got me interested in films. It was the first film I got to stay up and watch with my brother and sister and I loved the way the story unfolded. The ending is still vividly etched into my memory and I adored the way the final shot was executed. I was completely hooked on films from then on.

  • Another Earth

My favourite film of all time.

  • Four Lions

One my best friend and I love. It's funny from the get go and we watched this numerous times because of the one-liners.

  • What Keeps You Alive

Bit of a weird one this but here goes. Last year I came out as bisexual via email to my mother. I sent the email very late at night and because I tend to overthink A LOT, I decided to watch this as a distraction. It did the job and I ended up finding myself completely hooked to the screen as this fantastic story was told.

  • Ghost Town

One me and my mum enjoy and rewatch often. It is extremely underrated film that we discovered. It also features a fantastic performance from Ricky Gervais.

  • Shaun of the Dead

My comfort film. The one I go to a lot when I'm feeling sick or having a crappy day.

  • The Royal Tenenbaums

My favourite Wes Anderson film purely because I think it is such a thoughtful depiction of family life that I can relate to a lot to it (Obviously not saying that my family is as dysfunctional as the Tenebaums).

  • s Ha

The final shot might just be the best in film history.

  • Me and Earl and the Dying Girl

I laughed, I cried. Perfect film.

  • Midsommar

A film that I just can’t get out of my head.
