Very excited to watch this!
The film follows Paul (Timothee Chalamet) as he unites with the Fremens to bring peace to Arrakis and avenge his father’s death.
Dune: Part Two manages to be a superior film to its predecessor but it still has some weak points to it. The writing is terrific, especially as it explores Paul’s destiny and his relationship with Chani (Zendaya). Feyd-Rautha (Austin Butler), who was absent from the first film, is a terrifying addition to the sequel. From his very memorable introduction to his final scene, the character is a psychotic, haunting presence in the story and incredible antagonist. A couple of weak aspects from the story include pacing issues and some subplots don’t get enough time to be fully explored. The ending, in particular Paul’s final decision, could have been better executed as it feels like it comes out of nowhere.
Timothee Chalamet delivers one of his best performances to date as Paul. Zendaya gets a lot more to do in this film and is on great form all the way through. Austin Butler nearly steals the whole film with an utterly creepy performance as Feyd-Ruatha. Rebecca Ferguson puts in a fantastic performance as Paul’s mother Jessica. Florence Pugh and Christopher Walken feel a little underused as Princess Irulan and her father Emperor Shaddam IV but still are very good. Josh Brolin, Dave Bautista, Lea Seydoux, Souhelia Yacoub, Stellan Skarsgard, Charlotte Rampling, Javier Bardem and Anya Taylor-Joy provide solid .
Director Denis Villeneuve and cinematographer Greig Fraser delivers some stunning sci-fi visuals and awesome set pieces. A few highlights include the opening sequence, Feyd-Ruatha’s introduction, and the duel between Paul and Feyd-Ruatha. Hans Zimmer’s epic score is very impressive and hits the emotional beats of the story perfectly.
Final thought: A fantastic and visually stunning sequel with fantastic performances.
