first, this is a total triumph of cinema on almost every level. cinematography, editing, score, visual effects, production design, acting and sound are all the best of the best. watch it on the biggest screen possible with the loudest sound system. also, it's long. but the length is earned more so than some of the other marathon movies as of late. i didn't want it to end, i don't feel that way about a lot of long movies lately.
as far as dune and the dune story; it's A LOT, the lore is thick, and it's really really weird that doesn't come off nearly as weird as it should for how weird it is. and i love it. the water of life that kills men but gives some females infinite powers, the jabba/marlon brando hybrid bad guy that floats, the speeding worm trains that fremen can mount like khaleesi on a dragon, the telepathic embryo, etc.. weird stuff, very sci-fi and very cool.
i only read the 1st book way way back in the day, so my knowledge of dune lore is long forgotten. i pregamed dune 1 to get caught back up, and i was just fine jumping back in. i'm sure there is a ton i missed but part II can be enjoyed without the background.
lot's of comparisons to star wars as far as the new sci-fi king but i don't think so. sw is easy going down compared to this, not watered down or dumbed down, it's just easier to follow and digest. dune requires patience, and paying attention.
can't wait to watch it again, and i really hope they let this man make a part III to finish his vision.
go see it NOW.
