Very tempted to give this the full 5 stars, but I do have a couple of minor nitpicks so I'll hold off for now. Regardless, this is an incredible cinematic achievement. I love the first film, but I do think this manages to trump it, by being equal parts beautiful, tense and entertaining. Paul is really well developed in this film, and I loved that the film was willing to take the time to focus on his inner struggle and on his relationship with Chani. The Harkonnen's are also better developed here, with Austin Butler being a worthwhile addition. Visually, the film is obviously stunning. The visual effects are pretty much perfect, the cinematography is beautiful and the landscapes are incredible to look at. Plus the sound mixing is actually really good, which is great to say (looking at you Christopher Nolan). There are some really outstanding sequences in this film which maybe give it a slight edge over the original, such as the riding the worm sequence or the arena battle with the Harkonnens. The addition of the Emperor added an extra political layer to the story which was very much appreciated as well. My minor critique is that the film did honestly feel a little rushed right at the very end, and could have done with a couple more closing scenes in my opinion. But still, this is undoubtedly a fantastic cinematic achievement, and I absolutely loved it. Here's hoping that Denis Villeneuve continues to make masterpiece after masterpiece.
