I had completely forgotten that Pryce played the villain from start to finish as an entirely cartoonish parody - wonderful! And Michelle Yeoh is just a blast to see.

What's weird, after watching a few of the more recent Brosnan appearances, is that he's actually more suave now than when he was playing Bond.

What I learned from my recent QI binge: Orange used to be called red, until the name of the fruit became the name of the color. I don't know why I'm mentioning this here, though.

That said, this is really annoyingly groany. The poor self-serving, allies-threatening President is just misunderstood and only wants to be loved by his daughter.

I'm really trying to like Mackie, he's just not a leading man, I can't help it. It doesn't work. On top of that, Esposito as well as Nelson were properly wasted for this.

Have not seen it since the original theater run, so this was my first watch in more than 20 years.

Shooting almost the entire thing - except the last few minutes - on video was certainly a choice. One I am not sure has aged well: While it certainly adds a lot to the eerie feeling of decay and lost hope, I believe most of that effect was aimed to work as an immersive effect on a pre-HD TV audience, emulating the aesthetics of TV news and documentaries to a degree. Now and at least to me, it pushes the movie into the surreal, adds some unnecessary distance between the audience and what is shown. It dates the events as something from a different time - which is most jarring when the final scenes of a hopeful future appear in crisp film images, full on recognizable as a piece of fiction.

But maybe that's part of the point: To unmask the hope for a better future, if we just manage to survive the present, as a fantasy, a dream - the fact that the brighter future starts by cutting to Jim (Cillian Murphy) waking up (again), mirroring the beginning, certainly undermines the positive outlook.

But musings about how "28 Days Later" can be read now vs then aside, it is in any case still a stellar movie. The whole sequence with Jim wandering through empty London in his hospital gown appears endless in its fatalistic beauty, and has every right to be as iconic as it has become over the years. I just wish the movie would actually start with this sequence, instead of the weirdly out of place intro with the lab break-in, which seems to serve no function but as a mostly unnecessary exposition dump (with a slight reactionary slant).

What's also interesting is how each act is coded by a color leitmotiv: From the hospital gown and walls to shopping trolleys, supermarket decorations and various elements in Jim's home, an unhealthy teal is noticeable as a recurring visual during the first third. Then, when Jim and Selena partner with Frank and his daughter Hanna, the picture saturates with bright and lush greens - most notably the tray of magically preserved apples in the midst of decayed fruit and vegetables. And lastly, how could it be anything else, red: First subtle in the decorations of the occupied manor, then crass in the red dresses Selena and Hanna are forced to wear; and of course in the blood and blood red eyes of the infected, now brightly lit by lightning among the grey of the surroundings.

28 Days Later is a movie about zombies, sure (sorry, "infected"). But more importantly, Danny Boyle and Alex Garland use their plot to reflect about families. About which forms they can take, how they can be lost and rebuilt, but also how they can betray you. From Jim, who needs to see his parents one last time ("We left you sleeping. Now we're sleeping with you. Don't wake up."); to Selena, who vows to not get attached to anyone; to Frank and Hanna, who desperately look for a larger family as a mode of survival. And then we have the soldiers, first turning against one of their own, then driven to succumb to their own rage out of a lack of family: "What do nine men do, except wait to die themselves?"

"It's not all bullshit", says Jim, after he spotted an airplane flying above, and it is that sign of hope that allows the trio to survive being caught between a rock (a group of sociopathic soldiers) and a hard place (well, the world). And then Jim falls unconscious from his injuries. When he wakes up again, all the world is green. "Don't wake up."

The Gorge 1655l 2025 - ★★★ https://letterboxd.sitesdebloques.org/djmacbest/film/the-gorge-2025/ letterboxd-review-811297133 Mon, 17 Feb 2025 03:21:02 +1300 2025-02-14 No The Gorge 2025 3.0 950396 <![CDATA[

This one moment is just beautiful: Miles Teller's Levi is about to travel back home from his forbidden date with Anya Taylor-Joy's Drasa, and of course something goes wrong and he falls into the mysterious gorge. Drasa watches him fall and - without a second of hesitation - just runs and leaps after him. Nothing of the usual montage of despair and preparations and weighing of options and rational decisions vs emotional ones. She just goes for it, and it's such a sincerely romantic gesture that it carries the film across many of its shortcomings in other areas.

The Gorge pretends to be an action or even light horror movie that s a bit of love interest as a side plot to justify a Valentine's Day release. But it isn't. It's a love story, a romantic fairy tale, and its action scenes just serve as illustrations of the stages of Drasa's and Levi's relationship.

Yes, the two protagonists don't have more backstory than what would fit on a business card, but what little they have is efficient and precisely enough to carry the plot. Levi is the traumatized and ever brooding super sniper, including the cliché mystery of "confirmed kills" vs "the real number is much higher". And we get to know him in a 60 second montage of scenes of loneliness - at the beach, at home, at the supermarket. A man who has no place in the world anymore. Jeremy Renner's character from Hurt Locker, compressed to the essentials. It's simple - and it works.

Drasa's setup is basically the same - but with a wonderfully tragic little twist: Her relationship to her ex-KGB father. A loving father who tells her that he will take his life before they will meet next, to escape the most severe stages of his progressing illness, and he asks her to light a candle for him on the day it is supposed to happen. Later it will be that day when Levi sees Drasa across the gorge, crying, in front of a candle. "It's been a very rough day", she writes on a piece of paper, for him to read through his binoculars, and everything else that will happen is essentially a direct consequence of this. The man who has no home left in the world, meeting the woman who just lost hers.

As sweet - albeit cheesy, sure - and heartfelt the romance at the core of The Gorge is, as lucky is Derrickson to have two leads whose chemistry can carry the movie. The mystery about the gorge and the weird monsters that crawl out from it is a bit of a disappointment - borrowing from a wild mix of video game and body horror tropes, failing to ever find a way to turn this combination into original and compelling action set pieces. Fair, since both the gorge as well as the tacked-on conspiracy subplot serve only as devices to allow for Levi's and Drasa's relationship to blossom, to show their kinship evolving from spontaneous dancing on top of their observation tower to the tactical choreography of their highly trained super soldier gunplay down in the mist.

The Gorge is a sweet and sincere fairy tale of a love story, and it succeeds in turning the action-romance-relationship of the genre on its head. I just wish it would have invested a tiny bit more care into the elements of the genre it is trying to subvert. With lesser actors than Teller and Taylor-Joy, this would not have worked.

Requires A LOT of suspension of disbelief, and that little action sequence on the highway in the car is just spectacularly misshot. But it's a great premise, Bateman is a wonderful villain (easily overshadowing Egerton's blandness), and Collet-Serra knows how to keep things moving forward and the audience just enough guessing to stay engaged.

A very high-concept slasher. It deconstructs a lot of what makes the genre typically work, and replaces it with... nihilism, kind of. It's very barebones, and it's really smart in how it places exposition throughout the movie. And it dwells in its tedium, so much so that it can be offputting. I was very much in "okay, that was an interesting idea, but not sure where it was supposed to go" mode.

But it's all just a smart ploy to make the whole thing hit even harder in the end. I let those final few shots sit with me for a bit. They *linger*. The ending is unsettling, just stays in the back of your mind, and it only does that because of the experiment you witnessed the 80 minutes before.

Weirdly the most enjoyable of the three, which is a *very* low bar for me, and it only barely clears that. The plot is barely enough to fill 15 minutes, while the rest is just... stuff. And Tom Hardy is just so horribly incapable of playing this grimy-yet-somehow-still-lovable buddy comedy shtick, it's not even funny (also: it's really not funny because of that).

But something is slightly different this time. I guess it's the first of the trilogy that at least has a tiny bit of heart? Again, low bar. But it is what it is.

Like not GDT charming, but still about 3x more charming than that David Harbour trainwreck. 25 years ago this would have been DTV and recommended in certain forums as a "cult" movie. A bit of a challenge for myself: These are all the movies
- I have lying around at home (in HD or higher resolution),
- that are part of the Criterion Collection, and
- I have never seen before (or only in parts or so long ago that I genuinely don't if I've seen them or not).
I want to have watched at least 12 movies from this list by the end of 2025.

If successful, I will remove the watched movies and start with 0/x watched into 2026 again.

Note: This list is WIP, I'm still combing through my collection for more movies that are also part of the CC. Also, I may add new movies to this list throughout the year, when they become available to me.

Hooptober Eight 63334w Light and late https://letterboxd.sitesdebloques.org/djmacbest/list/hooptober-eight-light-and-late/ letterboxd-list-20074253 Mon, 4 Oct 2021 08:16:37 +1300 <![CDATA[

I am late to this particular party, called Hooptober Eight. First I was looking forward to this, then I didn't want to commit to horror, then all of a sudden I only wanted to watch horror movies but was too lazy to build a list. So I read the rules and watched a couple of horror movies (after September 15th) where I thought they might fit. And then I decided I wanted to build a list. Well, this is it: Late and deliberately light. Also: By the end of the month will be tough for me, despite the head start I gave myself for including every horror movie I watched after September 15th.

But I'm doing this mainly to reduce my option paralysis when chosing a movie, so, sue me. I'll be using the hashtag anyway. ;) I'm sure you'll survive.

So, without further ado, here's the categories:
6 countries: 9 - USA, Italy, Canada, Spain, UK, South Korea, Norway, Japan, Ireland.
8 decades: 1950s to 2020s, so 8.
2 folk horror: 3 - The Wicker Man (1973), A Classic Horror Story, Kill List.
4 films from 1981: 5 - The Beyond, The Funhouse, My Bloody Valentine, Dead & Buried, The Howling.
2 films from my birth year 1982: 2 - The Thing, Slumber Party Massacre.
2 haunted house films: 4-ish, not sure with some, but judging from what I read - The Beyond, A Classic Horror Story, The Legend of Hell House, House on Haunted Hill (1999).
The worst Part 2 that I haven't seen and can (easily) access: Alone in the Dark 2.
1 film set in the woods: 4-ish, some are probably fringe cases - Mandy, A Classic Horror Story, Kill List, The Hallow.
1 Kaiju or Kong film: 1 - really didn't feel like it, so I chose Pacific Rim which I wanted to rewatch for ages.
2 Hammer films: 2 - Dracula (1958), Captain Kronos.
3 fils with a PoC as director or lead: 3 - Candyman (2021), Black as Night, House at the End of the Street (2012).
3 Asian horror films: 3 - Parasite, Pulse, #Alive.
1 Tobe Hooper film: The Funhouse.

Since I failed last year with just two movies to go (Cat People remake and The Eye 2), I hereby pledge that I'll finish this list, even if it may leak into November.

Oh, and I'll add reviews to the things I already watched but didn't review, of course. Now, off to scary or gory stuff.

PS:
First time watches: Candyman (2021), The Beyond, Mandy, Alone in the Dark 2, The Funhouse, Slumber Party Massacre, My Bloody Valentine, Repulsion, The Devil's Backbone, The Wicker Man (1973), Dracula (1958), Captain Kronos, Black as Night, Parasite, Thelma, A Classic Horror Story, Kill List, The Legend of Hell House, House at the End of the Street, The Hallow, #Alive
Watched it, but so long ago I barely a thing: Ghosts of Mars, Jason Goes to Hell, Dead & Buried, The Howling, House on Haunted Hill (1999)

What the title says. I just picked one movie per release year since my birth. This is not necessarily what I think would be the best movie (from those that I've seen), but it's the movie that means the most to me personally. Really, this list is probably saying more about me than about the movies featured on it.

I was strict with one rule: Just look at individual years. No mercy picks like "I want something by director xy" and then picking one while there's actually something else you like more in this year.

There were a number of weird years, where I basically had to pick between a few "meh" choices, and others where I would have loved to pick three at once. I might add some runner-ups in the comments later.

Alright. I always spend more time chosing what to watch than actually watching things. So it was about time to participate in one of these list challenges, to take this option paralysis out of the equation. So I stumbled upon this Hooptober list by cinemonster - thank you for that.

I'm supposed to pick 31 movies and watch them in the month of October and review them all. To be upfront: I won't do that. I'll start watching right away, I don't want to burn out by trying to cram one movie per day, so I need to space this out a little. The rest, however, I'll try to do. Knowing myself, on about October 25th I'll be at 19 movies and still unrealistically optimistic that "I just have to watch 3 movies per day for the next 4 days, easy, right". But maybe I prove myself wrong.

So, without further rambling, here's the list I picked, and how those movies relate to the challenges posed:

6 countries: 9. 1x , 1x Netherlands, 1x Japan, 1x Thailand, 1x Hong Kong, 1x Canada, 2x UK, 3x Italy, 20x USA.

6 decades: 8. 1x 1950s, 2x 1960s, 4x 1970s, 9x 1980s, 2x 1990s, 4x 2000s, 7x 2010s, 2x 2020s.

7 2nd films of franchises: 10. 6 obvious sequels, the less obvious "10 Cloverfield Lane" and 3 remakes (Cat People, The Crazies, Maniac)

4 body horror films: 6. Slither, Possession, Scanners, Akira, From Beyond, Pandorum (I assume, I really don't know enough about this last one).

2 films from this year: The Invisible Man, Gretel & Hansel.

3 disease based films: Depends on the definition of "disease based". If that means "disease plays an important role", then 8. Flesh + Blood, Slither, Vampire Circus, The Crazies (1973), The Crazies (2010), Pandorum, Black Death, The Bay.

The highest rated horror film from the 50s that you haven't seen and can access: Diabolique.

1 film that is set entirely inside one location: With being rather liberal with "inside one location", I count up to 5. Slither, Baron Blood, Pandorum, 10 Cloverfield Lane, The Pool.

1 Invisible Person film: The Invisible Man.

1 Non Dracula Hammer Film: 2. Vampire Circus, The Devil Rides Out.

2 films with a black director or predominantly black cast or lead: 3. Demon Knight, Ganja and Hess, Candyman: Farewell to the Flesh.

1 film with a movie theater in it: 1, but I'm sure while watching I'll find more. So far I'm only certain about Demoni.

And 1 Tobe Hooper Films (There must ALWAYS be a Hooper film): Texas Chainsaw Massacre 2.

Bonus note: Up to 28 of these 31 movies are first time watches (I'm incredibly uncertain about the original Crazies, I'll find out, I guess). While building this list, I discovered a couple of glaring holes in my watch history (and ed many I already knew about). So here's to catching up.

Anything else I should know before I start? Please leave a comment.
