Chicken Run: Dawn of the Nugget

2023

★★½

• Well, it's a FANTASTIC MR. FOX riff with a bit of PINOCCHIO in there, which is pretty much exactly what one might expect out of a legacy sequel of a film that left us with the scenario CHICKEN RUN left us with.

• Given that the fella who originally played him went and made himself so radioactive as to render his recasting inevitable at least a decade before this thing went into production, it's a bit of a surprise that Rocky's been recast with all the finesse one might expect out a panicked decision made late in post-production. Levi plays the character as a down-the-middle buffoonish animated sitcom dad (with a bit of slack-jawed yokel in there): the charismatic charlatan of CHICKEN RUN really ain't in there anymore.

Newton, on the other hand, is a fairly OK Ginger, but given that they recast Julia Sawalha on of her being 'too old'*, to hell with that whole situation.

• Some odd color handling of dark background elements whenever lens flares come into play.

• I miss the kazoo orchestra...

• The dystopian hellscape of Fun Land Farms is by a wide margin this thing's most effective conceit. Not quite as brazen as laundering concentration camp imagery via cute claymation chickens, but the horrifying existential implications of electronically lobotomized chickens happily marching to their violent deaths is not softpeddled one bit.

*Sam Fell's non-denial of a response to the whole situation was so incredibly thin and mealy-mouthed that one can only conclude that this is exactly what happened. Unless it was something even more crass.
