From one letterboxd member to another,

You should know first and foremost that I feel most seen and real when I’m watching something created by Mike Flanagan. During his career, he’s created amazing, tragic, scary, joyful, devastating, and wonderful dreamworlds that illuminate every corner and peel back every layer of the human experience. He takes the most beautiful and most dreadful moments of life and weaves vibrant tapestries. It’s also why I have two tattoos inspired by Mike Flanagan’s work. The Life of Chuck will stick with me for my entire life. I cried and I cried and I cried and I cried. I expelled my grief and expressed my joy. I let it all out and feel so weightless right now.

I am chemically programmed to be sad. And then I was trained from birth to think I was born evil—that I can’t be extraordinary. It’s been branded into my brain: I am a malignant, dangerously aggressive cancer in the lives of others. Yet, I know these aren’t facts of life, just feelings that still play major roles in the universe lying between my ears, nearby every person I’ve ever known, loved, seen, or imagined. They are all part of my web of multitudes.

Sometimes, there’s something powerful enough to allow me to able to catch a glimpse of worthiness through the thick smog suffocating me. Art chisels away at the crystallized pain entrapping me in this cold darkness, until a ray of sun appears for me to step into—to feel warmth. Even just temporarily. Historically, it’s been Flanagan’s work. I can’t count the times I’ve held on to his work like the last thread of my lifeline. It’s incredible to feel so seen and so known.

The waiting in life is the hardest part. It’s true. Waiting for work to end to get in line for the letterboxd x neon early screening was hard. Waiting for the unforeseeable end of this humanitarian and political crises is hard. Waiting for the damn kettle to boil is even hard. All different levels of hard, of course. But whether it’s impatience to full-blown hopelessness, waiting is hard.

And when it comes to suicide, waiting for the hope and relief you’re desperate for is one of the hardest, longest, defeating waits in the world. But we hold on because of chance.

This movie has moments that are so sad that they wrecked me. But it strays from cynicism; it locks it out. The dresser has been moved in front of the door. The killer can’t get in. We’re safe here.

One of the biggest real threats to the world is this cynicism. Being cynical prevents change and stunts growth; it spreads quickly and dangerously. It’s like an airborne virus. As you doomscroll down a spiral, you don’t realize the exposure to its spores are beginning to break you down. Even worse, it tricks you into thinking it’s empowering you. But that’s all a farce.

It’s lying to you, flirting with you and trying to make you feel more intelligent, disguising itself as “realism” as you navigate the world with it whispering in your ear. It drains your world of its color until you can only see in black and white. It is cyanide. It will be the death of humanity. It will make you forget chance.

Chance is what has helped many of us navigate the thoughts of ending our lives. Our relationship and openness to the power of chance can be the thing that carries us through the waiting.

“There’s a chance it could get better.”

“I want to give myself a chance.”

“I deserve a chance.”

Of course, things don’t always go as planned. You take a chance and apply for a job. You don’t get it. But you did it, right? Because you had hope in that chance you took. And we often give chance another go. Have you ever tried a food and disliked it, but given it another chance? Whether you liked it the second time around or not, you trusted that it could have been different—been positive.

When it comes to the end of something— the end of the world or the end of a life—we feel fear or dread. The end is near, and you see what you didn’t even realize you loved so much that you’re now afraid of it being over or gone. A big fear of mine, especially when I was dancing dangerously with thoughts of suicide, was dying in pain. The concept of that always snapped me back into reality. It reminded me that even though I feel like I cannot suffer for one more minute, I don’t want to feel fear or pain before the nothingness. I couldn’t leave the world like that. I begged for the chance that my endless efforts to pay off, and they have.

There are so many little things that make up your universe and your multitudes. Not one singular thing about your life would be the same if you did something differently. What are the odds of you seeing a shooting star? What choices brought you here? Your choice to go to the store with your mom in 2013 could have somehow unfolded the path that got you here to read this post. If you stayed home that day, maybe you’d be somewhere else entirely differently in this very moment. Why did Chuck stop to dance? What if he didn’t? That dancing shifted the trajectory of someone else’s life, too.

There are so many moments. Group hugs, dancing in the kitchen, kissing your cat on the head, the fleeting warmth of the hand of your friend touching your back when walking behind you, smiling at a baby on the street. Each of those moments adds a thread to your life’s tapestry.

I earnestly wish that one day, I can accept that I deserve joy and goodness. I will live my life until my life runs out, and hope I have the chance to believe I’m wonderful.

I need Mike Flanagan to sleep soundly at night knowing that his art is a lifeboat

I loved this overall as a concept, but there were some parts that bored the shit out of me, keeping it from being the 4 that it was on its way to being for the first half hour. I’m glad I got a random google article promoted to me on my browser that said this has been compared to Possession, but I don’t think every movie with a women seemingly going off the rails is comparable to Possession, so I went in a little wary and ready to roll my eyes. Fuck, the good parts are good. Like, really good. I don’t know if I’ve ever seen Amanda Seyfried this incredible, or anyone in recent history for that matter. Frankly, her performance here blows all but two Oscar nominees out of the water (including the winner). Jeanine is a powder keg full of pain and frustration and it’s written on her face and in her mannerisms, but Seyfriend doesn’t lean into it too much. You can feel it trying to tear through every inch of her body’s skin just under the surface and you feel that burning with her.

But the rest is so muddled and convoluted and it’s frankly quite hard to follow at times. It’s uneven and tonally unsteady and awkward, like if Frankenstein sewed his creation together after a night out.

I don’t relate to this in the overt way in the actual story and don’t pretend I know what this childhood experience is like, but the concept of memories of a fractured childhood resonates deeply and through much of the dialogue and all of Seyfried’s performance, I felt seen and liberated in a way. It’s always comforting to watch something about wishing you could separate yourself from your father for whatever reason you need to. And I can’t emphasize enough how well she gets the internal fight to jump through the screen. It’s just that I wish the rest was… better

The political unrest and coinciding censorship were what gripped me with a lot of intensity. I’ve said the word fascism in a lot of my latest reviews, but as an American, that’s where we’re headed and a symptom of developing fascism is censorship and strict control over art/theatre/music. And there a lot of films I’ve watched about various forms of oppression, suppression, abuse, and power imbalances, which are all things those in power want to cover up and destroy. Art and creation are the most intimate forms of expression and creation—they are inherently symbolic megaphones that reflect the state of the world and the endless consequences. This was made after defying and fleeing censorship, by any means possible, for the world to see—to learn, to know.

The more they don’t want you to see it, the more significant and threatening it is. A film about censorship and dangerous power dynamics where people with power attempted to censor it. I follow a variety of Palestinian journalists and photographers on Instagram and have noticed a significant drop in their presence on my algorithm, and I have been very reliant on reels to see what’s happening on the ground. God knows the news isn’t showing me. BBC says Israel killed children and receives so much pushback that they have to make a statement to apologize.

All that said, we’re going to have to learn to take risks we never anticipated and follow the footsteps of those who did the same.

There’s a lot more to be said about the relational power dynamic between men and women in the Middle East and within religion, but that’s a story that’s motivated exactly mine to tell

“If everybody looks the other way, then everybody’s in on it.”

It would be so typically selfish for me to have some sanctimonious preamble about some enlightening watching experience as a white person. In short, yes, it’s enlightening and it’s extremely uncomfortable. If you’re white and you don’t have that experience, you are just a bad person.

The alligator is an extremely overt metaphor, and a perfect one. The metaphor not being an underlying theme to discover and something we see is important—this is all out in the open, and the explicit imagery is a metaphor within itself. The Florida segue is the perfect way to invite it in. Alligators are cold blooded. They kill their prey in a variety of ways because they have the physical power to do so. They’re apex predators, sitting at the top of the food chain, solidifying their place there over the 30-something million years they’ve been here and have a significantly longer lifespan than its counterparts within its ecosystems. If you crack this open, you will that in historical context, white people have always had a longer lifespan, whether this is due to a systemic power imbalance in healthcare, or a more straightforward power imbalance with murder and execution.

The alligator will strike using their impossibly strong jaws with a bite force of 2000 pounds per square inch. A panther’s bite force is 1,500–a significant drop. Note: I specifically go with panther because of the Black Panther Party. This is important because despite this long-standing difference in power that has been in development since the Epoch period, in Florida, the panther often kills the alligator despite this power dynamic, regulating their shared ecosystem. The alligator, even with its famous death roll where it locks its jaws on its prey, turns 360° repetitively until it is dismembered, and drowns it, may still overpowered by the more agile panther. There is always something tragic and terrible at risk, but the fight to help sustain a world of quality is hard, but never fruitless.

I ire the choice of first person point of view and I think it works conceptually, but not fully visually. There’s only so much camera can do, but it felt too smooth and slow and lingered in an unnatural way that didn’t entirely work for me. Sometimes, it felt like talking heads in a way that distanced me from connecting to what was happening in front of me. But, really, with a movie this rich, do I really care? I also think that in lieu of that, it elevates the sound’s impact. It gives significantly more power to the sounds you don’t ever end up seeing, or the sounds you wish you could turn away from

I have been trying to squeeze in whatever I can before the Oscars tomorrow, so I chose an International Feature Film I missed. I went in knowing absolutely nothing about this in the slightest, so to get hit with a “based on a true story” card at the end was jarring and amplified the dark reality of this, nauseatingly so. Not my first pick for International Film, but it’s an effective, hideously ugly story told with some really beautiful shots.

Yeah yeah yeah, Oscar bait and all. But I was unexpectedly overcome with emotion during this. It was the perfect way to close out the shorts because it’s devastating, but lands on a note of hope for the future. Poachers in general suck and whatever, capitalizing off of poor people and destroying the environment, but fascism is led by poachers. They are also poaching. They’re doing far more than that, but poaching is part of their technique and warfare.

This is as much about rhinos as it is about humans. We have a duty to be that voice for the voiceless. Even more so, the younger generation unfortunately needs to accept that sooner or later, they must learn how to organize and lead to protect each other

Watching this is a painstaking and infuriating experience. I don’t know you can live with yourself if this doesn’t bother you, and I just straight up wish you wouldn’t live at all if this seems reasonable or justifiable in any way. This just makes me fear for the future of the people I know and those don’t know, but still love and want the best for. You would think it would be so simple to care about the livelihoods of people, every one an individual with lives and dreams and memories and family and friends and personalities and hobbies, and yet

NL (eng. below)

Mijn OCD draait OVERUREN……..

Misschien I Origins een beetje?

Hoewel ik wil graag eerder sterven als mijn girlfriend, why lie.

ENG:

My OCD is working OVERTIME……..

Atmospheric, cold, but still funny. Hollowed out and emptied by men/society.. because women in the eyes of a man, have no value. A woman is property; free will is an illusion and so on. That’s what men want and think for women, for sure.

And unfortunately AI is definitely the future, it’s unstoppable. While this all seems so futuristic, think about it CAREFULLY. Maybe we aren’t robots, but this is now—I fear it’s just the beginning.

Anyways, reminds me of another, older movie, but I can't the title. Maybe I Origins a little bit?

“You make something out of nothing.”

There’s so much to take away here, but I was enamored specifically by the theme of sisterhood. It’s delightfully melancholy. When you have a sister and have a good relationship with her, you get to carry her with you always. Defend her, protect her, bother her, guide her, fight her, and put everything on the line for her. Whatever the outcome, every choice you make comes from love. That love is foundational for everything

The first short shown in the series really sets a tone for what you’re about to go into as a whole. It’s incredibly upsetting and jarring and there are more Don’t let the language or time barriers trick you—this is now. I live in a very Bosnian neighborhood; my nephew’s (well, he’s my girlfriend’s nephew but I’ve taken on the title of aunt after eight years) family and friends on his father’s side fled Bosnia and came here. And when you look at what’s happening in Palestine and the war that’s becoming more apparent and obvious in America, you begin to realize we have always been frogs in boiling water.

It’s also an unfortunate reality that people have stepped up to do the right thing and been met with something as drastic as death, then and now. I don’t think it gets talked about or recognized enough, but it’s natural that fear like this can deter you from wanting to really dedicate yourself to any sort of revolutionary act of change. In our age of technology, we’re more exposed than in the past. Think about whistleblowers, for example. We are living on a terrifying timeline where acts of bravery—the choice to do the right thing—can cost an ultimate price. People were never supposed to learn how to balance that

This may be my favorite short. It’s either this or Magic Candies. This was painfully moving, especially if you understand the weight and space of PTSD, or C-PTSD, even. It may not have the same effect if you can’t put yourself in the shoes of someone who takes up so much space and does damage to yourself and to others. You can feel, and often are, cumbersome. And it’s ok to be cumbersome and need someone other than yourself. You’re going to hurt, hurt yourself, and hurt others, and there’s no getting around that. For anyone.

Trauma fills you up, drowns you, suffocates you, burns you, dries you out, swallows you whole, and leaves you to die. Sometimes, all you have left is yourself and need to be tended to by others, but they can’t fix it or heal it either. They can’t make it stronger. It’s you who has to cut the ties, take in the weight, make it through the darkness, and hold your breath long enough until there’s air, light, relief, and release
