Very kind story about a bundle of misfits escaping the misfortunes of self-doubt. The big celebratory spectacle numbers are dazzling enough but I find myself appreciating those moments when the only players about are Dorothy and co., and the city itself. Seeing them skip and dance midst the vast puzzling architecture, it’s both intimidating and enchanting, and that’s very true to life. Also, Diana Ross is just all around fantastic.

These dolls aren’t the only things made of plastic – this is one of the most artificial films I’ve seen in recent years. Greta Gerwig, who displayed ample sympathy to the precarious conditions of wayward youth in Lady Bird, did not write and direct Barbie – a boardroom did. I can only assume she is the unfortunate fall guy (sorry, fall woman) for this lifeless heap.

Almost none of this looks particularly good, I can’t even be bothered of thinking up a polite way to say it. I can feel the constant, substanceless insistence on grandiosity and scale glaring out of the screen, harshing my senses, and I’m honestly offended at how slack-jawed this film expects me to be. Disrespectful.
Nobody here is giving a performance of note, not even Walken with his five minutes of screentime. Austin Butler should have really played Paul, his pillowy…
