Jacques Tourneur is one of only few Classical Hollywood directors whose body of work has been re-evaluated by film lovers and experts and experienced an increase in popularity in recent decades. For a long time, he stayed under the radar because he mostly directed B movies, however he can certainly be considered an auteur.
Tourneur is known for his expressionistic use of lighting and shadows and chiaroscuro lighting. This style is particularly evident in his horror films and film noir thrillers, such as "Cat People" (1942) and "Out of the Past" (1947). For this reason, Tourneur's works in these two genres tend to be superior to his Western and swashbuckler films shot in Technicolor, where – although he also works solidly in color – his strengths do not lie.

In the course of his career, Douglas Sirk has possibly made the greatest development of all the directors with whom I have dealt extensively so far and am familiar. In the 1930s and 40s, Sirk made films of various genres, including films noirs and comedies. So while one searches unsuccessfully for central ideas, for recurring themes and motifs in the majority of his body of work, it was only in the early 1950s that Sirk developed into the auteur he is considered to be today. He became director of melodramas, often shot in Technicolor.

My conclusion: Working through Sirk's early work, which contains hardly any interesting films, was occasionally kind of a torture. However, a sad certainty is that he ended his career in 1959 at its peak.

To do this, I used the average ratings from Letterboxd, IMDb, MUBI and FilmAffinity, but only included the first ten best-rated films by a director on each website in my calculations. The average of these ten films result in one value per website, so each of the four websites is equal. From these four values, I calculated an average overall rating, on which this ranking of directors is based.
Short films and documentaries were not considered!

Of course, this is a relatively easy calculation, I did it just for fun. But I think the results are quiet interesting.

My ion for film and film history, which already started in my middle childhood, was confined for the most part to stop motion or cartoon series at first, especially 'Donald Duck' and 'Tom and Jerry'. It was in the fall and winter of 2019 that my interest and iration for film in general grew after watching The Birds, Psycho, Vertigo, The Shining and Titanic, among others. During the first COVID-19 lockdown I had the time to watch several films a week and I continued to work my way through Hitchcock's filmography and discovered many other impressive films.
