Dune: Part Two

2024

★★★★½ Liked

I've tried so long to look for a word that perfectly describes just what this film is. Ultimately everything just leads to something that, in some way or the other, returns to being a synonym of one little word: big. The scope, the ambition, the visuals, the performances, the narrative, the themes, it's all massive, colossal, epic - big. Villeneuve is operating at a level of mastery you see in the classics (and it seems this is the likely fate for this endeavor), he makes you feel the weight of everything, he crafts this picture in such a way that you truly do get the feeling that 'fuck, this is some huge stuff'. Seriously, almost every choice feels like a stroke of genius; what is essentially a film about space has a climax of two dudes fighting with knives on a dusty planet - and it's riveting as fuck. The two standout performances for me personally were Butler - he has that devilish charm, that wicked barbarity that's just restrained enough to keep it from straying into the cartoonish - and Bardem. Memes aside, his stupidity, his laughable worship feels so real, so desperate and pathetic, you can't help but want to believe what he believes, even if just out of sheer pity. All in all, this is just amazing. Unfortunately I wasn't able to catch it in theatres - but even without the bells and whistles of the imax experiences, the film's quality doesn't dim and continues to shine through, and that's really a testament to yes, this is going to be a classic. Worth the hype. Oh and absolutely love the blue eye for letterboxd watched icon - cute!

(Also thanks to that one twitter joke I can't stop saying 'nissan al gaib' everytime I see a Nissan)
