   literally opens with ethan and benji bickering like an old married couple, plus ethan blowing benji a kiss.
   this film is so gay that even jeremy renner doesn't emerge straight. he says "next time i get to seduce the rich guy," and it's a joke but also. his character's bi.

   difficult to rate because textually this is not a gay movie. the benji/ethan forehead touch from the trailer was cut. ilsa may as well have never existed. ethan treats grace like the most important person on his team despite having known benji for roughly 20 years longer. but on the level of one man filming another man, this is the gayest movie I’ve ever seen. chris mcq is clearly so enamoured with the way tom cruise’s body moves that he takes every opportunity to disrobe him and make him bend like a pretzel. some of this honestly seems like it should have been kept between them in the bedroom. gay rights 🏳️‍🌈

5. Mission: Impossible

   they really try pushing the "ethan is straight" angle in this one, but tom cruise is only two years off interview with the vampire and there's residual gay energy all over him. like yes, he might do a horrible, quasi-sexual pat down of his boss' wife, but he also recruits luther to the team by flirting with him.

   gay character count: 3. ethan, luther, hannah. hannah may only say 2 lines before getting blown up, but when you think about it that's extreme lesbian activity.
   

6. Mission: Impossible III

   you may think: "ellie, how can u put the film where ethan literally marries a woman above II", and the answer is that although i couldn't be bothered to rewatch it, julia and benji are out there being bi and gay respectively, and that makes it gayer in an overall sense than the oppressive heterosexuality of II. at least julia has a little bit more agency than poor nyah.

   what happens to ilsa in this movie is actively homophobic. im gay and i didn’t like it

   anyway. listening to the director's commentary was exhausting and a lot of this is heteronormative bullshit (ethan recklessly endangers nyah during the car chase but then he "saves" her so she falls in love with him?? ugh) but benji turns up in the next one so at least there's that to look forward to.

   does actually engage with the ambiguity of shakespeare’s sexuality. but unfortunately shakespeare shooting his shot with the earl of southampton was legitimately painful to watch (5/10)

something interesting i noticed in the process of putting this together is that there's a tendency for women-written Shakespeare to be radical re-imaginings or modernisations. and that's fine, sort of! but there's also this air of condescention to it: 'you can write Shakespeare, but not REAL Shakespeare. we're leaving that to kenneth branagh, who spent over a decade with this genre in a chokehold'. plus, if i'd only been counting female directors, there'd be about 10 films on this list, which is fucking depressing.
