The incredible images Clouzot and his camera crews were able to create in real time, without the advent of digital effects, are staggering in their hallucinatory inventiveness. They were, quite simply, on the vanguard of experimental film. I don't know if he could have pulled off their integration in to the fiction film he envisioned, especially given the conditions of the production, but seeing the germination of these ideas gives me chills and leaves me with a bittersweet longing.
