4v291o

For me the Mission Impossible franchise is one of the best action series to ever exist. A great first film, and while it stumbles with the second film it continually improved after that with phenomenal set pieces, solid characters for the audience to follow, and it perfectly scratches that itch of the last second heroic, self-sacrificing protagonist that I think all of us secretly wish we could be.

For what could potentially be a finale for the franchise, until it's inevitable reboot, there is a lot to love but it's also a large regression for the series. The first half of the film feels like a clip show catch-up that you'd watch on YouTube to refresh yourself on the previous entries. If that only lasted 5-10 minutes I could forgive it, but it is so drawn out and prolonged for seemingly no reason that it tremendously hurts the film. The pacing isn't terrible, but it also isn't good.

The back half of the film ramps up the action and finally gives some story progression but it takes so long to get there. The airplane sequence is some of the best action I've seen in a movie, but the climax of it (which I won't spoil) is very emblematic of the issues this movie has. Throughout the franchise it has it's moments of humor which I'd normally say it pulls off fairly well. There are a few jokes that land well here, but also many more that just don't work and feel very out of place.

This is a good movie, but it's very far from a great one and that's pretty disappointing actually. I still absolutely recommend it, especially for fellow lovers of the franchise, but temper your expectations.

Since 2019 there are only a handful of movies I've seen in theaters 3 or more times:

Portrait Of A Lady On Fire - 8 times (would have cracked 10 times if not for Covid shutdowns)
Tár - 5 times
Babylon - 3 times (would have been more if this wasn't pulled from theaters so fast because it bombed)
Bones And All - 3 times

Now Sinners has been added to that list after this watch. There's just something special about Sinners that I don't think I can quite articulate yet. It's like a force of nature that just pulls you in immediately and then never lets go as it builds up steam. It's compelling and incredibly entertaining all the while having layers of thematic depth to it that you wouldn't expect from a film that, for lack of a better term transforms in the way this does. This is the type of movie that theaters exist for.

As expected this was even better the second time. I still have issues with some of the story choices that don't make a whole lot of sense when you think about them, but they are so insignificant and unimportant when it comes to how entertaining and enjoyable the film is as a whole. The themes, the music, and the performances are all executed so well. I know it's early in the year still but so far this is my favorite of the year by a wide margin. Anyone who considers themselves a film fan owes it to themselves to see this in theaters.

All the small little gags, the fucking phenomenal soundtrack, the color of the set and outfits, the level of satire and how ridiculous it can be at times, and it's just really fucking funny. I definitely understand the hype now, and while this movie definitely has it's issues I can't deny that the style, music, performances, and vibes make this extremely entertaining.

Next day edit - Been thinking about this movie a lot since watching it and bumping the score up half a star. This one sticks with you, in the best way. While I still contend it has it's fair share of issues (pacing on the back half, some of the character choices) but I don't think any of them really matter all that much, and most importantly they don't detract from it at all. Really want to give this one a rewatch, think I'll enjoy it even more.

This was a relatable one. The fractured family, growing up in nowhere Montana (shout-out Hamilton, you weren't actually that bad and it was only from age 1-8), and constantly being put in awkward and uncomfortable situations. Terrific performances, great cinematography, and a well written and well made film. Why doesn't Paul Dano direct more? He's pretty good at it.

FLCL is probably the most important and single most influential piece of media that I've ever watched, at least in of how it applies to myself. I've written an in depth review about FLCL as a whole and the reasons why it's so important to me personally, here. So rather than regurgitating those same thoughts again right now I'll instead talk a little about what I think I'd have to consider my favorite scene/moment from the show, which you can see here. This particular scene was also a big influence on this tattoo.

Episode 4, Full Swing, questions Naota's ability to "swing the bat". Something his cool older brother, who left for the US to play baseball, never had an issue with. In the context of what the show represents, adolescence and growing up, swinging the bat really just means taking a chance or going out of your comfort zone. Haruko's line of, "Nothing can happen until you swing the bat" speaks to how we need to be our own catalysts for change in our own lives. Nothing will change if we just live a ive life full of waiting and indecision. Did I take exactly that away when I watched this when I was 12? Absolutely not, at least not consciously, but it's obviously something that really stuck around with me. The whole "swing the bat" mantra is genuinely something that I did come back to and think about quite a bit as I was growing up and even still do to this day. I don't think I could ever overstate the importance of this show to me personally. It was weird and it was strange but it felt like it understood me in some odd way. It also opened me up to a world of awesome music and more strange shows and movies, something I'm eternally grateful for.

Perhaps this is a bit less refined than Princess Mononoke but I would argue it is still just as good. I'll say it again Nausicaä is the best character from any Ghibli (yes I consider this Ghibli) film and I don't say that lightly. Courageous and caring, or maybe just courageous through her caring. That almost childlike strive towards the altruism of doing only good, but being so earnest and steadfast in those feelings and in her actions makes her impossible not to root for. The action is good, the animation is still beautiful to this day, and the story is timeless. A perfect animated film, a perfect film in general.

Not many better movies out there that you can watch when you're having a terrible day. The positivity of Kiki as a character, and the characters around her, mixed with the relatively low stakes nature of the story means this is always a delight that will allow you to walk away from it feeling better than you did going into it. One of the best examples of a comfort film you could possibly watch. Love this movie, and I always will.

References and nostalgia for the sake of nothing more than being references and nostalgia doesn't exactly make for the most memorable or interesting movie, but being a part of the target audience does still allow a lot of this to be enjoyable at least. It's very stupid, intentionally so, and meant to be dumb fun, which it is...but only occasionally. When a movie like Didi exists though showing a way to incorporate that early 2000's nostalgia into a genuinely good film it makes this feel even more hollow and painfully surface level.

On this list I'm going to rank my favorite directors. I'll have one film from each of them listed and films will be ranked in order of which director, not film, is my favorite. I'll put a little write up with each one with my thoughts on that director, and why I chose the film I did, or something like that. This is a list that will change and be updated over time.

  1. In the Mood for Love

Yes, no shock here. Wong Kar-wai is my favorite director. I thought about putting Fallen Angels here, as I think it might be Wong's most accessible film, but I think In The Mood For Love is undoubtedly his best film, even if it's only my third favorite of his.

  2. Twin Peaks

If Wong Kar-wai never existed then Lynch would be my easy number one director. Everything he does has so much character, personality, insanity, and ion behind it. He tells stories that, while they may seem bizarre, often cut to the core of the darkness that is always lurking just beneath the surface. Truly a one of kind person, filmmaker, and artist. Twin Peaks.isnmy favorite piece of media, so it felt like the right choice here.

  3. The Shining

Kubrick was a titan of cinema. Everything I said about PTA applies here, but even more so. Maybe The Shining isn't his best film, but it may be the greatest horror film ever made. Recently going through his whole filmography forced me to bump him up the list a bit as well. Paths Of Glory just blew me away.

  4. Vagabond

The warmth, the empathy, the understanding, and the beauty of life that Agnès captured feels so pure. However you can't forget her fiercely feminist ideals and how daring many of her films were for their time. A pioneer and one of the most important voices the medium has ever had.

  5. Only Lovers Left Alive

Only reason Jarmusch isn't higher is because I haven't watched enough of his films yet. While Paterson is probably my favorite, Only Lovers Left Alive holds a special place in my heart. My love of Detroit and Tilda Swinton in one movie? With Tom Hiddleston too? Yes please. I look forwarding to discovering more Jarmusch I'm the coming years, and we may see his place in this ranking go higher.

-Edit- Ok I watched a few more of his films, and yeah, seems like I just love everything he does. Ghost Dog and Coffee And Cigarettes were both excellent.

-Edit 2- Yeah, he's in my top five now. Do I think he's a better director than Kurosawa? No, but I have this odd connection to his films that I can't explain but it makes me love pretty much everything he does.

  6. Seven Samurai

Maybe it's the basic and easy choice, but dammit do I love Seven Samurai. You can talk about it's influence, and more so Kurosawa's influence until you're blue in the face and you won't even be scratching the surface.

  7. Perfect Blue

Gone far too soon. Kon was a master of animation and pushing it to it's extremes. All of his films were great, but Perfect Blue may just be one of the greatest films ever made.

  8. Phantom Thread

Calle a film bro all you want, LP aside this man has made almost exclusively masterpieces. He has master every aspect of filmmaking. I don't think any particular film of his personifies that more than Phantom Thread. Costume and set design, the score, cinematography, performances, and the story all work together in perfect harmony to make a film that I think is technically perfect. Though I could say that exact same line about 4 or more other films in his filmography as well. Just a ridiculous talent.

  9. Oldboy

Park Chan-wook is absolutely phenomenal. I do think I need tocwatch more of his work, but the revenge trilogy, The Handmaiden, and ever Stoker are all great and show a mastery of his talents as a director. Oldboy and The Handmaiden would be his two masterpieces, and while The Hamndmaiden may be slightly more well made, Oldboy is a film that once you've watched it you'll never forget it.

  10. GoodFellas

It's Scorsese, I mean come on. I don't think I need to say more.

These are my top tier favorites, so films that really define my taste and to an extent myself. Limiting this to only films which is why it doesn't include Twin Peaks or NGE.

  1. Taipei Suicide Story

Call it recency bias, or blame it on the fact that the director of this messaged me on Instagram after seeing all of my reviews and mailed me a signed poster. This truly captures a feeling that I have unfortunately related to for almost all of my life. An overarching sadness that cuts through everything and lingers constantly and continuously, however it approaches it with an empathetic understanding that I don't know I've ever seen captured better in the medium of film. Perhaps this will drop a few spots in coming years as many of my "favorites" have over time. For me though this is a really special and really important movie.

  2. In the Mood for Love

One of many Wong Kar-wai films on this list. I think it's that incredible ending that really puts it over the top for me though. Truly one of the greatest movies ever made and plays right into my sad boy aesthetic.

  3. Portrait of a Lady on Fire

Just read this review, and it should explain why this is where it is for me.

  4. Wristcutters: A Love Story

I've got about 20+ reviews out there about this and I've probably watched it more than anyone else on the planet at this point. A movie that speaks to continuing to push forward and that it's never too late to find happiness.

  5. Alien

One of the films that really got me to appreciate cinema from a younger age. The top of my entire left forearm is a tattoo dedicated to this movie. It's just a perfect film.

  6. Let the Right One In

Standing atop my favorites for a good 8-10 years this film, and also the novel it's based on, really struck a chord with me right at the end of high school. Two of, in my opinion, the best child performances of all time really sell this. It's a lonely little film about finding acceptance from someone you care about masquerading as a vampire flick.

  7. 2046

A culmination of all of WKW's work in the best possible way.

  8. Happy Together

I've been in an extremely toxic relationship before and the way WKW is able to capture that here is simply spot on. Two people who know that they need to move on but simply don't seem to be able to. Also Tony Leung's best performance.

  9. Chungking Express

"Wherever you want to take me." 🥹

  10. La La Land

Wong Kar-wai is my favorite director, I can confidently say that even though I still have two more of his films I need to see at the time of making this list (Ashes of Time/Blueberry Nights).
Almost every single film on this list is a part of my all time, personal favorites.

  • 2046

Overtime this has become my favorite WKW film. It truly does feel like a culmination of his work, taking every from his previous masterpieces and combining into a tale of longing that stretches back over those precious films.

  • Happy Together

Tony Leung's best performance. A heartbreaking and devastating film, perfectly captures how easy it is to be drawn into a toxic relationship, even when you know its bad for you. Tony crying into tape recorder is an Oscar worthy moment.

  • In the Mood for Love

Potentially the greatest ending in all of film. It's again devastating, the longing and desire. The style, the performances, the absolute perfection. Not a wasted frame, not a wasted inch of frame. A masterpiece.

  • Chungking Express

I used to say this was my favorite, but I think the happy ending is something that I just cling to because it's something rather rare in WKW films. Faye is maybe my favorite WKW character.

  • Fallen Angels

The style that this is absolutely drenched in is matched only by the incredible camerawork that make this perhaps Wong's most interesting film. Again, a masterpiece.

  • Days of Being Wild

Worth it just for that final scene with Tony Leung.

  • As Tears Go By

A well done Hong Kong action movie that has heart and also has some of WKW's early genius shining through. Plus Maggie Cheung.

  • The Hand

WKW and the 60's work well together.

  • Ashes of Time

Probably the weakest, outside of My Blueberry Nights, but I think I probably enjoy this more than most. An interesting story that is told in a way that many find, understanbly, confusing.

  • The Grandmaster

ittedly a bit less interesting than some of his others, but a gorgeous film with some nice flashy sequences.

With all the attention on the new 2022 list I wanted to create what I would have submitted. Tried to actually take some time to think about this one. It's a mix of personal favorites and ones I think are objectively important to cinema history. My biggest take away from this is I still have a lot of film history I need to catch up on. At the time of creating this list I've seen 39 of the 100 from the actually list that came out this year. I've tried to add some notes that speak to my reasoning for why I've selected each film I have. For the record though, this is an absolutely impossible task.

  • Persona

I think this may be the greatest film ever made. So yeah, that's why it's on here.

  • In the Mood for Love

While Happy Together is my favorite this is a film that is made with so much care, so much precision. One of the best made films of all time with one of the greatest final scenes in film history.

  • Perfect Blue

The greatest animated film of all time from the greatest director the medium of animation has ever had.

  • The ion of Joan of Arc

Maria Falconetti with the greatest performance ever put to film, need I say more?

  • Seven Samurai

Ikiru is probably my favorite Kurosawa, but the entire landscape of film would be different without this. The amount of films and filmmakers this has inspired is unquantifiable.

  • 2001: A Space Odyssey

Similar to what I wrote up about Seven Samurai, this changed what film can be and cinema would be much different today without this. I may like The Shining more, but again the influence and importance of this is impossible to overstate.

  • Hiroshima Mon Amour

One of the first French New Wave films, it just so happens to also be the best. Though ittedly I do have a lot of FNW I need to explore.

  • Portrait of a Lady on Fire

Call it recency bias if you want, but I genuinely believe this is one of the best films ever made. The way Sciamma uses music, in a film completely devoid of a score or soundtrack, to further accentuate 3 of the more powerful and emotional scenes is so well done. Every single frame of this film is beautiful and could be a stunning painting in it's own right. The history of film and cinema has been dominated by the male gaze, I don't think there is a film that better shows why that should not be the case going forward than this. Says the 32 year old CIS guy...

  • Mulholland Drive

David Lynch has already had such a large influence and effect on cinema, going all the way back to Eraserhead. I think that's an influence that is only going to continue to grow over time, well after he's gone (though let's pray he somehow finds a way to just become immortal). In lieu of being able to select season 1 of Twin Peaks for a list of films I have to go with Mulholland Drive. An expertly crafted and perfectly made film that explores the pitfalls and dangers of Hollywood. But really this could easily be a spot for either Eraserhead or Blue Velvet.

  • Alien

The greatest horror film ever made. From the sets, to the sound, to the performances. This gave us the greatest protagonist in film history, in my opinion, in Ellen Ripley. A flawless and perfect film.

Alien is one of my favorite films of all time, and I think one of the best ever made. Aliens is one of the best sequels ever and those two films are far and away the best of the franchise.
