one of the most unique movies ive ever seen

mad god is not really about any plot, instead mainly focusing on the atmosphere and the world which it does immensly well because the design of this world is some of the most fascinating stuff ive seen in a movie in a while. you can feel the ion in this as you discover new and more fucked up things than the last where you feel like in a post apocalyptic hell filled with interesting characters and places to explore. the visuals are so captivating. its such an experience with very impressive stop motion animation.

alien is a flustrating movie for me. while i think its definitely a great movie, every time i watch it again i truly want to absolutely adore it. but i just cant. every time i get enthralled by the amazing set design, great characters, its slow approach, amazing alien design and the absolutely phenomenal concept as a whole, i get reminded of the aged filmmaking.

almost every time theres an encounter with the alien they try to hide him (which isnt inherently bad in fact hiding the monster for as long as you can can very much add fo the horror) but they do it with very clunky shot choices and editing which result in making it hard to tell whats going on.

another thing that buggs me are the amount of fake jumpscares. there are like 4 of them. 1 and 2 wouldve been fine but 4? at that point it just takes away from the horror.

again, a truly great horror movie but it couldve been so much more

well, i have finished samurai jack

day after day i watched episodes and episodes of this show, season after season. and now, i have finished it. and like with all good tv, i feel a hole in my heart.

samurai jack is the most unique cartoon i have ever seen. samurai jack is one of if not the best cartoon ive ever seen only next to like avatar the last airbender. samurai jack has a truly varied sense of stories, animation, music, characters... basically everything. it is so imaginitive and downright cool with how it builds atmosphere and uses its slow approach to build tension, weight and impact. and the funny thing is, i honestly dont think i wouldve been hooked by the show if i was a kid, but that exactly why i love it so much now.

im pretty sure samurai jack is one of my favorite protagonists ever now. jack very much reminds me of characters like superman or even cooper from twin peaks. strangely enough season 5 reminds of the return too lol. i really love how he truly feels like a folk/mythical hero. i also really love the variety of cultures he learns from and the variety of cultures in this show as a whole. it really feels like jack is fighting for the entire world. the show continues to develop him with honestly one of the sickest backstories ive ever seen for a character and with actual flaws. jacks anger and hatred is so integral in fact, it repeatedly shows throughout the show, climaxing in season 5. jack is a phenomenal hero to look up to and inspire. thats why its so hard to watch the first few episodes of season 5. seeing him like that honestly hurt to watch.

aku is a delightful villain with a sick design, fun personality and an immaculate presence due to the amazing voice acting by mako iwamatsu. he brought so much to that character. his dynamic with jack is very fun and it shows how good and evil are often in stalemate with eachother. because at its core, this show is about the never ending fight between good and evil.

the show points out how long it is taking samurai jack to complete his mission many times which colluminates in that final season. while the most obvious reason this is is because the show needs to go on. but i also think it shows how good and evil are in stalemate of eachother. aku may never be beaten but jack never stops. yes he almost does in season 5 but thats why i find ashi such an amazing addition. achi is the personification of the good impact jack has had on the world and it is this impact that in return gives him strength to fight off. and in spite all this she very much feels like her own character with agency rather than just "jacks love interest". and seeing all the people jack has given hope to help him in the final episode was beautiful... but ofc, that final win was never gonna happen without sacrifice.

the ending of the show is textbook bittersweet. i always knew this show wasnt gonna have a "and they lived happily ever after" ending but damn, this still hurt. jack getting back in time and staying with achi was never gonna happen because as the show continued to pprtray throughout its run, the battle of good and evil doesnt turn out like that. it will have you questioning what youve done in the end. but its in that final, beautiful scene, where we get the catharsis of seeing the world we helped to make better. its so poignant. its so beautiful. i love it so much. god this show rocks.

all ive talked about until now was the core story but that is far from all this show has to offer. what makes this show truly stand out is its variety of storytelling, unique animation, cinematic quality, action, music...

this show is a true piece of art. while not every episode is amazing, i dont think the show has a truly bad episode. at its worst its just fine or mid.at its best its some of the coolest and most innovative storytelling in the animation form. the amount of times this show took a genre and put their fun little spin on it was amazing. really loved those episodes which gave the shows episodic nature a true sense of joy. you didnt know what the show was gonna do next. what form of genre or story it was gonna tackle next. but you always knew it was gonna be u like any other cartoon. some of my favorite include the western episode, the noir episode, the seven samurai episode, the mech kaiju episode, the haunted house episode, the zombie episode and many more. you also had episodes that werent trying to emulate a specific genre but still fucking rocked. such a varied show.

well i guess thats it for now. i am deeply sad the show is over because i loved it. jack as a charavter inspires me and makes me want to be a better person. the story of good vs evil in this show is amazing coupled with a great variety of stories e hanced by the cinematic animation, sick music, great voice acting, colorful world, colorful characters, incredible use of atmosphere, tension building and much more.

i love samurai jack

andor is basically rebels for adults

its incredible to me how the same studio behind kenobi and ashoka can make a show like this. this is the most fleshed out and captivating both sides of the empire and rebel conflict have ever been and their dynamic as a whole. its so dark, realistic and gritty. it also actually looks good. kinda crazy for a live action star wars show. the obvious highlight is one way out which had me jumping out of my seat ready to take on the empire. loved luthens monologue. there are so many amazing lines about opression in here. also this show is so good at making me immensly invested in characters i thought i never would be. like mon mothma. her storyline is literally just political talk, no action, nothing like that, yet its so compelling. i do feel like the show sometimes felt too grounded and not sci fi enough but it still was really amazing. this is what star wars for adults should be.

season 1

these past couple of days ive been having a really fun double viewing experience of watching season 1 of samurai jack and andor at the same time. typically id watch a heavy andor episode and then put on samurai jack for something light hearted. and i loved the first season of samurai jack.

samurai jack is one of if not the most unique cartoon ive ever seen. i absolutely adore its unique style and animation. its so minimalistic yet immensly cinematic. the show also uses it so well at soaking you into the world with its atmosphere. the characters are colorful and fun. the show pulls from many cultures to make them really varied and interesting. aku is a really fun villain who especially shined for me in the 6th episode (the fighter girl who helps jack). and jack is such a delight of a main character in a way which reminds me of dale cooper. hes so polite, nice but can also get angry. and i love how this season dealt with his anger and hatred from episode 3 to episode 8. these two are like my favorite episodes of the season and they built off eachother seamlessly. obviously my favorite episode was the seven samurai one, but the one where he literally fights his hatred and the 3 archers on a tower are really close.

im loving this cartoon so far

i was surprised how well all the one liners aged on a rewatch. i basically knew them from memory but they still hit so well. the characters are colorful and enjoyable, the direction is so fun and fitting for a comicbook movie and there are some great twists and turns mainly the peacemaker one. its incredibly repetitive to say at this point but gunn is really good at making you care about silly characters. i also thought the action was really nice. harleys escape is probably gunns best action scene to date. and the comedy still rocks.

misery is one of the most interesting movies ive seen in a while. the premise is fascinating and the movie uses its potential masterfully. to get it out of the way, katy bathes is incredible in this movie. she is able to give this psycho a very human side while excelling at the transition from normality to insanity. every time that character did something worse than last time it hit. especially that scene with the shotgun. damn. i also loved how smart the protagonist was. seeing him deal with the situation was really captivating and the added sweet police couple gave the film a sort of fargo quality. it explored the obsessed fan stereotype with so much intrigue and nuance which only added to the experience. it also has nice cinematography, it creates tension immensly well, it really hooked me. and that ending!

rosemarys baby creates such a captivating feeling of uneasiness throughout its runtime. it starts off pretty normally but it slowly peels down its layers as you get more and more invested. and i loved this slow approach. it makes for a very intriguing watch elevated by the main performance of mia farrow who gives rosemary so much life and relatability. all of the other performances rock as well with ruth gordon being a standout as minnie. she feels like your typical sweet grandma, which she plays so well, yet as the layers get peeled off her they add a whole nother dimension to her performance. it also gets elevated by the cinematography which blends the every day with a haunting element seemlessly. the movie explores the patriarchal need of control over women through satanism. i also really like a scene near the end where the villains get fully revealed and theyre kinda goofy.

a very well done psychological... horror? idk what it is exactly

you know those classics you watch and see what the hype is about but it doesnt really hit as hard as you imagined they would?

the matrix is not one of those classics

this was my third time watching the matrix. ill it, the first time i wasnt completely focused on it the entire time, the second time i finaly watched it with my full attention and realized just how much there is to the movie. i have now watched it a third time and im completely won over to the 5 star rating. every time i watched it i got something new out of it.

the matrix is a perfect blending of sci-fi and action for a blockbuster. the main allegory is very clear for general audience and made super compelling by the sci fi part of the movie. seriously, this movies lore is incredible and the way the movie explains it piece by piece is amazingly done. the theme of this movie is portrayed extremely well in combination with the sci fi. thats when sci fi works best. it is still relevant. even more than when it came out. it was truly ahead of its time.

then you have the action and my oh my. every time you think the movie peaks it continues to one up itself. and this is especially apperent in that magnificent final act. the matrix' influence on action is giant and for good reason. something i love especially about the hand to hand fight scenes is the longer takes (for that time especially) and how you can see everything clearly. some of the older action movies ive seen can feel a bit incomprehensible sometimes but matrix' action is always shot an edited precisely.

another crucial part in this movies success are the characters. they are soooo good. neos development as his agency over his identity and his power of will grows is amazing to watch. every time he makes the next step to becoming "the one" is so exciting and hype. like when he dodges the bullets, or when he faces off against the agent, or when he finaly grows to his full potential. it is such a satisfying arc. then you have trinity whos just such a badass but doesnt fall into that stereotype because of her relationship with neo. ill it i dont think their romance is the strongest but i think the power of love or whatever you wanna call it is crucial in this story to show how humanity still has hope. this is very well countered with the guy from sopranos who turns on them and shows how prone the weaker of us are to falling into the system. and its made very understandable (aside from the creepy moments he has with trinity obviously). and then you have morpheus. morpheus is used incredibly well in how the movie breaks the heros journey structure. the fact that neo says "fuck it, im gonna save him" instead of letting his old mentor die like its fixed in heros journey adds so much to the themes of will power and breaking the mold in the movie its magnificent. and then you have agent smith who is just a marvelous evolution of ai from someone like hal in 2001 a space odyssey. he hates humans but doesnt see the similarities he has inherited from his creators. he is a force to be reckoned with so much so that you cant help but cheer when they overcome him. "dodge this" so good. and all of the performances are so great.

some of the other elements that really elevate this movie are the stylistic choices like the calculated yet wild editing, cinematography or that awesome score.

the matrix is monumental sci-fi action, one of the best movies ever made and probably the coolest

feels like a spiritual successor to oldboy with the main villain casting lol

i saw the devil reminded me, as i already mentioned, of oldboy, memories of murder and even a little bit of cure the way it uses dark spaces in certain scenes. i love those movies! this movie is definitely a lot more disgusting than those and scarier as well i guess (aside from cure). its a good old revenge movie with the main message as youd already expect. what makes it stand out are its visuals and characters.

this movie is gorgeous and takes full advantage of the digital format. it looks and feels so tangible with lighting that adds so much texture.

our main duo of characters is really captivating to watch. the protagonist has fascinating progression of falling deeper and deepef into the abyss until his obsession finaly stops and he realizes it left him the same as when it started. the main villain is scary. the movies really gruesome violence adds to his presence and the performance is simply incredible. so much screen presence.

the dynamic between these two makes the whole movie and its really captivating yet horrifying journey as it keeps getting clpser to the abyss. one of the many highlights in this chase is the house action set piece which i thought was incredible. like yeah the action is good throughout but this scene really kicked it up a notch.

if youre looking for another movie like oldboy or memories of murder this should fullfil your needs. its a dark psychological journey uncovering the bottom. i saw the devil is a fall into the abyss

2001 a space odyssey is maybe the movie i think about the most, its certainly one of my favorite movies ever made at this point but i have never really talked about it on here in depth before

so lets get to it

2001 is still the best space movie ever made without question. hell, throw the term sci-fi in there too. what makes this movie so monumental to me is that it feels like a complete, transformative experience. it gives you just enough information for you to be left thinking about its slow approach, innovative visuals and overall mystery for years after you watch it.

the reason it feels so fullfiling is because it blends so many genres together to explore the mystery of the universe and life as we know it. the dawn of man feels like an animal documentary. the moon part feels like your typical sci-fi flick. the mission to jupiter (aka the hal part) straight up feels like a horror movie (hal singing daisy is lowkey the scariest moment in any movie ever). and beyond the infinite features experimental cinema 101. i believe its this blending of genres that gives this movie so much purpose and rewatchability. i love how the movie can go from special zero gravity shoes and zero gravity toilet gags to the literal journey beyond the infinite. i love how this movie can portray immensly grand ideas yet still feel grounded.

then theres the plethora of amazing details. on this watch for example i caught that hals red dot eye mirrors the cheetahs glowin eyes in the dawn of man part. mirroring cheetah as the first man predator and a.i., something man themselves created, as the latest man predator. this detail is fucking incredible. already one of my favorite movie details ever.

theres also the stylistic choices from kubrick. like how he chooses to use music and sound. the contrast from classical music when we see the wonders man built in space for the first time, to the deafening silence when hal kills frank and we can no longer hear his breathing. or when dave is travelling through the infinite and we only get freeze frames of his reactions. these stylistic choices helped the movie age incredibly well.

another thing i love about the sci-fi and space part of this movie is how it portrays aliens. realistically, if aliens were real, i think we could hardly comprehend them. and thats what this movie excells at, never actually showing you the aliens and having the journey beyond infinite feel incomprehensible with the experimental filmmaking. this movie is so good because it uses different movie genres to portray its incredibly rich themes and concepts in such variety.

so yeah, i fucking adore 2001 a space odyssey. i love how it actually feels like an odyssey. it is so vast in scale. it is so fascinating in its mystery. it is so methodical in its filmmaking. it is so rich in its themes. it is so versatile in its story.

it is so... goated

sinners is tuff

a very solid movie with some really great sequences and score, i just lowkey wish it was a full on horror movie. thats probably just a matter of personal taste tho. the way they use a certain vampire rule here is really cool and its interestingly used to create tension. all the characters are good here, i think the movie is very good at dividing attention to the main cast. I dont think any of them particularly stand out and im not gonna be thinking about any one of them specifically for the next few days, but they work really well as a collective. the villain is pretty good too. i also like how he ideologically challenges the main cast.

i also have to mention the narrative use of music which is amazing here. it creates some powerful moments and its maybe the best part of the movie.

the movie looks really good altho, and this might just be my theatre or me being blind, i did think it was so dark i couldnt really make up what was happening just a few times. but this happened very little throughout the movie, i could count the amount of these moments on one hand.

overall sinners is a really fun ride with a captivating cast of characters, a pretty good antagonistic force, an amazing narrative use of music (and a really good score as a whole), i just personally wish it went full on horror. maybe what im trying to say is i wish it went wilder or more unique ig. idk. great movie nonetheless.

i have finished twin peaks and everything is worse now

the return takes a drastic dramatic change from the original show. this change was already felt in fire walk with me, but not to this extend. this show is, apart from the lore ans dramatic moments, almost nothing like the original. while it gets funny sometimes like the original, that charm is almost completely gone. this show is much more serious and especially drawn out than the original but it still finds time for some of that good old charm. theres just much much less of it. this is a pretty bold shift so what did i think of it?

i fucked with it. there are a few things that bugged me, for example i think coopers dougie shtick went on for a little too long. while kyle machlachlan was doing some excellent comedic work, the dragged out nature of this storyline didnt help with many of the other dragged out scenes. also i dont really like what they did with ed and norma. so much development went into the decision for them to finaly be happy together in the original show, just for you to find out they waited another TWENTY FIVE FUCKING YEARS. like DAMN. also im not really sure how i feel about laura being a "chosen one" type of character if thats what episode 8 meant. also i wouldve liked to see hawk as the sheriff tbh hes pretty much the main character of the twin peaks police plotline anyway.

but aside from these, i had a really great time. i thought evil cooper was a really cool antagonist, someone you really root against. i thought the new lore was interesting as always. i loved the progression of most of the old characters (again, aside from like ed and norma) like for example andy and lucy. that computer scene was sooo cute. also, casting micheal cera as their son was genius. or bobby, whos reaction to seeing lauras picture is one of my favorite scenes in all of twin peaks. its so powerful. i also really liked how focused this was on briggs and how much gordon cole was in it. i liked the new characters too. i already knew a little about episode 8 before watching the show but it was still really cool. i cant wait to find out what it all meant. what all the intrecate lore in this delightfully intense series of shows and a movie as a whole meant. one of the most fascinating mystery shows ever. i also like that they kept the unique style of the original shows effects instead of trying too look super realistic. and of course, the show is filled with lynchs signature dreamy, disturbing even horrory scenes like in fire walk with me which i loved. oh that final episode.

im sad to say goodbye to twin peaks but everything must come to an end. i have never seen anything else quite like it. goodbye twin peaks. rest in peace master.

the kind of movie that will have you looking at the black screen for 10 minutes after it ended

twin peaks is a show i tried to get into 3 years ago the first time because of the goat jay. at that time i was balls deep in my breaking bad/better call saul faze and the pilot didnt do much for me. half or maybe even a year ago i tried it again and got to the second episode. a couple of days ago i gave it my third shot because its almost a tradition at this point that every time i have a big assignment at school i get hooked on something (like last year with the combination of planet of the apes and young sheldon just before my graduating tests). this time it was david lynchs AND mark frosts twin peaks.

i rewatched episode 2, went straight into episode 3 and thats when the show finally hooked me. specifically that ending. the first time we see the black lodge. and what kept me going, aside from the amazing mystery and thrilling lore, were the characters. cooper is just delightful. hes endlessly likeable with captivating quirks to him like his whole spiritual connection, or his overall connection to twin peaks as the people. one of my favorite fictional detectives for sure. there are many more delightful characters in the show like cooper, but if i talked about all of them id be here all day. some of my favs include: audrey, ben horne, the goat gordon, nora, the giant, major briggs or even leland who i thought was an amazing antagonist later on. undoubtebly, after the laura case gets resolved, it takes a bit for the show to get going again, but when it does, its amazing again. and dont get me wrong, i enjoy most of the goofy shenanigans that happen with the characters, but theres simply a lose of focus. which only highlights how incredible the laura palmer part of the show was. after season 1 i got through season 2 a lot quicker than i thought i would because i was just so incredibly excited for fire walk with me. and here we are. back with laura. and what did i think?

I WAS BLOWN AWAY

lauras presence was an essential part of the show. it was like a ghost was looming over the entire show, a ghost bigger than all the others in the show. the credits with her theme and that iconic picture of her gave the show so much drive. and even tho we got to enjoy sheryl lee as an alive character in the show in the form of her cousin, in the back of my mind i was always looking forward to seeing her go all out as laura in this movie.and holy shit shes incredible. her screen presence is amazing, her portrayal of depression and feeling of being cornered by the world is amazing, shes amazing. now that we got her as an actual character she jumped straight into, at least, my second favorite character right next to coop. her beautifully tragic journey here is portrayed with horror 10 times as scary as the show could ever imagine. its such a transformative experience full of heartbreakingly human moments. "your laura dissapeared. its just me now." even the little things such as not only having her name as a priority before everyone else in the movie, but also lelands. their dynamic in this movie is intense and even downright horrifying. the whole movie is like a giant nightmare. so full of lynchs amazing knack for moody storytelling and atmosphere. twin peaks could become scary and bone chilling, but good god it never got to this level, and i loved it.

maybe im biased because i spent the last few days binging the show but this is the best lynch movie. i cant wait to watch the return. and you can officially call me lynch-piled.

watched the unfinished version because curiosity got the best of me and i mean yeah its exactly what you expect weak story, weak characters, youll forget about it the next day, its kinda similiar to the lego movie in its themes and overall concept which the lego movie does a hundred times better... but it can be fun sometimes, jack black doing jack black is always nice and he has great chemistry with momoa imo i just hope modern "comedy" writers dont completely fall down the brainrot hole and try to write actual jokes which this movie has too but like... cmon. i do feel a little bad that i didnt watch this normally because visually the movie didnt look all that bad in the later promos but whatever.

i kinda think its impossible to not like this movie

wall-e is just textbook on how to make a likeable character and his romance with eve really shines. one of the best ive seen in an animated movie. they really use the robot side in fun and creative ways but then you also have the critique of capitalism which is basically eternal. its a very satisfying story with great characters, great visuals, great emotional core... BUT

the villain is kinda meh. in my eyes, there were two ways to do the wheel. either

a) make him devoid of any personality

b) give him an interesting personality like you gave the other robots

because as it is, hes kinda in the middle. i did think he was a) at first but no, he does show geniuene signs of agression so its not fully commited to either which doesnt make him stand out at all. if he was devoid of any personality he couldve easily worked as the dehumanizing personification of capitalism. if he had an interesting personality, he couldve been hal for kids. but as hes in the middle, hes neither.

but other than that yeah what a beautiful movie. so hopeful in its ending. probably in my pixar top 5.

this rewatch solidified this as my favorite spielberg movie (that ive seen)

schindlers list is probably THE best movie spielberg has done but im just not gonna be coming back to it that much

catch me if you can combines spielbergs electric whimsical filmmaking (and that childishly wonderous score) with some really strong emotional writing, some of the stuff frank pulls seems crazy but i just take it as a matter of that time rather than the logistics of the film itself and as ive already said, the movie has a really great emotional core, great characters, so im simply just swept by the story, i love the performances, i love the look of the film, i love the camera work from spielberg, i just love everything! it resonates with me

something kept me looking back at alien. its something about the incredible premise of a ship in space with the unknown. i have wanted to watch aliens for a few days but i couldnt find the theatrical cut... until today. and yeah that was a banger. not much to say. so i immediately went to prometheus and im immediately gonna go to covenant after i finish this review.

prometheus has some pretty stupid characters. it has some janky writing but overall, this is like exactly what i was looking for in regards to alien. a movie that talks about the lore and aims so high with its themes. granted as ive already said, not all of it lands, but the movie crafts such an intriguing atmoshpere with so many intriguing questions. the characters while sometimes really stupid, were also really enjoyable most of the time. especially david obviously, fassbender was phenomenal. its also very well made obviously. its one those movies where the ambition of themes and how much of them actually land, the uniqness of it and the mystery of it overpowers some of the janky writing for me. and that alien abortion scene? fantastic.

not sure how itll hold up on a rewatch, but for a first watch, it certainly had me intrigued.

this movie has been on my radar ever since indiewire called it the best movie of the 2000s.

and while i dont think it is, it is an interesting respectable choice.

a.i. artificial intelligence is some good old spielberg scifi brilliance combined with some good old spielberg emotional core. its similiar to blade runner but it goes more imaginitive and wilder with some of the concepts. the first hour so of the movie sets it up immensly well as you really get to explore the concept of a robot child both emotionally and intelectually. also philosophyically. then the real journey begins with some exciting worldbuilding and the new character of the sex robot who is very fun. not to say all the intellectual philosophycal stuff isnt there, its just that the movie transforms into something different. and the emotions are still there, i gotta say this movie has some incredibly effective emotional scenes that also make you think. i think the ending does go for a little too long buts its also pretty great.

hayley joel osment gives one of the best kid perfromances ive ever seen. hes amazing as the child mecha desiring for love. jude law is also very fun in the movie. was a nice surprise to see brendan gleeson as well.

this is one of those sci fi movies that bring you back to your child wonder with the imaginitivity at display, strong storytelling and a compelling emotional core. did i mention thats its the collaborative project of two of the greatest directors of all time? yeah. spielberg and kubrick. crazy. banger.

my first miyazaki and im already itching for more

tfw you watch all the pixar dreamworks and other animated classics craving for more and then this huge world of "foreign" animation (american animation is technically already foreign to me) opens up to you.

the animation rocks, its so expressive, so dynamic and so satisfying. especially when the main guy beheads people with his bow. that was so funny but raw at the same time. the art direction is stunning. visually fantastic.

the characters are compelling to watch with this fascinating lore and world building. this was such an imaginative fantasy world with real stakes and great action. also a very nice romance imo. i wish they showed us a kiss. im kinda meh on the centrist view but its for kids so i dont fault it for that.

nice flick
