]]>(the creepers look and behave like my dog kevynn - instant masterpiece)
Quite messy but so clearly guided by an earnest and beautifully unchained singular vision to lose yourself in. Bong lives between genres and tones, trending familiar theatrical ground but staying focused on the romance and connection at the center of the character (with plenty of room for horniness) while bringing out career-best performances from Pattinson and Ackie, with a killer cast of ing acts to boot.
]]>Solid #ProficiencyPorn but makes a mess of any characterization.
]]>it’s bullshit there isn’t a submarine emoji
]]>It never goes any deeper than surface level, focusing mostly on the investigation and FBI agents, but performances are great (Hackman especially) and it's not afraid to be ugly.
]]>Vaguely running this through the VCR a few times in my youth (mostly the incredible ladder sequence) but had no idea it was in the Police Story canon till this revisit. A goofy combo of 90's action tropes and some Bond inspired set pieces that shift into Jackie heat in the second half, and it mostly works!
]]>Loved this as a kid, TV edits and all, and it still rips today. Gene was one of a kind.
]]>Watched on Tuesday February 25, 2025.
]]>So perfectly niche and successful in capturing such a specific moment in time. The scripted moments derail things with their odd expositional tone, but the pieces that feel like genuine human connection in the weird uncertainty of the pandemic are beautiful and hilarious.

]]>scenes from cinema that made me cry and I'm not sure that's the correct reaction?
EDIT: on 02/12/24 Alison Willmore changed my life with her piece on 'The Case for the Spectacle Cry', which states “The Spectacle Cry isn’t about the tragedy of a scene, or its poignancy, or any specific emotional appeal at all. It’s about that sensation of being bowled over by the majesty, ambition, or craft of what you’re seeing.” The perfect descriptor.

Bonus: Tales From the Hood 1 & 2
Maybe I made a mistake seeing the 1988 remake first, but the original seems stagnant and lifeless, with McQueen seemingly out of his element in the lead and the danger never feels immediate or threatening, as the speed and movement of the Blob constantly shifts to fit the plotting and simply walking away appears to be the best solution. That being said, it has a few great moments, including the movie theater (the projection booth window shot!) and diner scene. I also appreciate the attempts to wrap some emotion into the core younger characters even if I'm not sure how effective it ultimately is. Viewed as a b-movie it's a short and fun trip, though not nearly funny or campy enough to really shine.
