More than just an adaptation of Murakami's short story. Hamaguchi and Oe's screenplay expands upon and ultimately transcends the source material. I especially loved their choice to incorporate elements from other stories in Murakami's Men Without Women collection—"Scheherazade" and a bit of "Kino," too (one of my favourites). Leaning into Uncle Vanya as a thematic focal point was brilliant as well.
I'm unfamiliar with Hamaguchi's other work, so while I'm unsure how much of this is a product of the adaptation…
